Jean Christian Shh perfume bombs after racism incident

Ironically Jade Goody abused India even while an Indian factory was
making the perfume which she endorses for 40% profit sharing! They
should call it Shh Perfume : The scent of racism. Sales may skyrocket
in the UK.

MUMBAI: Jade Goody, the British TV star expelled by millions of viewers
from reality show Celebrity Big Brother after her alleged racist
remarks shook two nations, has more bad news.
She endorses a perfume brand called Shh, whose bottles are made in a
Gujarat plant. The bottle production has come to a halt following her
remarks on actor Shilpa Shetty, unflattering references to India and
disturbing public queries about how Indians could eat with their hands
when they knew where their fingers have been to. Also, it has come to
light that the Indian tourism department's invitation to her to visit
India was unnecessary as she was here in April 2006 to tour the
factory. More curious is the claim of some employees of the bottle
manufacturer that her father is a black man.
Pragati Glass, a bottle manufacturer that is headquartered in Mumbai
and has a factory in Bharuch, Gujarat, had made 500,000 Shh perfume
bottles of 100 ml capacity and over 200,000 of the 50 ml version in the
last six months. "The bottles were in production this morning but our
client in UK asked us to stop production," says Stephen Noronha,
vice–president, export division.
A top executive who didn't want to be named said the reason behind the
freeze was that Jean Christian, the UK firm with which Goody has a 40%
profit sharing agreement as brand ambassador of Shh, feared the
perfume's sales will be slow in England because of the racism
controversy.
In Pragati, the perfume line is simply called Jade Goody. The deal
between Jean Christian and Pragati was made some time in last April. It
was around then that Goody visited India. She stayed in the Ambassador
Hotel in Mumbai and then visited the Bharuch factory. "She wanted to
know how bottles are made," says Noronha."She seemed polite.
She even said, 'India is a beautiful country'. Maybe, they all say
it. I think she is a good bargainer. When she went to Bandra to shop
for footwear she got the best rates compared to her other white
friends. I met her mother too. I didn't meet her father but I heard
from people close to Goody that he is a black man. That's why I was
very surprised when I heard her comments about Indians."
Many Pragati employees are surprised and hurt at her comments. Manish
Agarwal, a sourcing executive, says, "I have great respect for her as
our client but her conduct has left us very shocked. Once you abuse a
whole country, you cannot take it back. I fear politicians will use her
comments as an issue. That may affect our factory."
