skirt lengths

iKitty <ikitty.nos...@shaw.ca>
Awhile back, some of us agreed that skirts around knee–length were more
flattering than longer skirts (at least in my age group). My impression
is that the posters who were in agreement were um, older women (as I
am). That leaves me with some mid–calf and ankle–length skirts ... Is
anybody shortening those skirts or just donating them? TIA

I don't wear anything mid–calf or below as I am short legged as it is.
Anything any longer than right below the knee makes me either look like
I am a little girl dressing up in mommy's clothes or I am standing in a
hole. Makes me waaaaaaay out of proportion looking and feeling.
Are these ankle–length and mid–calf skirts not candidates for
shortening?

IMO, ankle–length is fine as long as it hugs the body in some way –– it's
the mid–calf length that often looks unflattering. I have several mid–calf
length skirts/dresses that I only wear with knee–high boots. I don't know
why I visually find that length more acceptable with boots, but I do.
My 2 cents,
ami

Maybe because it visually lengthens the line if they are similar colors. I
agree with you, FWIW, mid–calf is hard to pull off, especially for petites.

I agree with Ami.
i just find mid–calf makes my calves look big & short.
i prefer either above the knee or really ankle length skirts.
bye now,

I hated the sunsets of whatever colour, I hated its beauty and its
magic and the secret I would never know. I hated its indifference and
the cruelty which was part of its loveliness.

If I may offer one, male, opinion – long narrowly tailored skirts and
dresses are one of the most appealing forms of clothing a woman can
wear. The figure–hugging look has undeniable power, but even when
curves are not defined these skirts and dresses offer an image of
elegant restraint that tends to remain in the mind, reappearing at
times throughout the rest of the day – which I suppose is the desired
effect

One of the mid–calf skirts is a tiered skirt. The bottom 4 tiers (out
of 6 tiers are two different fabrics, alternated. At first, I thought
I'd take off the bottom tier; that would be simple, wouldn't it? But
then I noticed that removing the bottom tier changed the balance of
colours in the skirt. I think that removing the 3rd tier is my best bet.
Another mid–calf skirt is trumpet–shaped: it flares starting at the
knees. It might be possible to shorten the skirt at the waist, but it
would be tricky. And, I have so many other sewing or mending projects!
A third skirt, full length, has six gores, which flare out gradually
toward the hem. I tried pinning up the hem to get an idea of how the
skirt would look shortened, but it was hard to see since I was pinning
up about 18 inches! I have an idea (I haven't tried it yet): pin a
piece of contrasting–colour yarn at the desired hem length. The fabric
is a blue silk paisley print (which I love), but somehow, maybe because
the fabric is silk plus the ankle–length seem to make the skirt more
"special occasion", and I don't have too many of those!

i have some difficulty even finding skirts that are long
enough..................and when i do, they look like PRAIRIE
SKIRTS...........................
i have recently begun taking more and more clothes to the tailor to have
them fitted just for me.
i am sick and tired of looking "half" put together!
:)
