The May 2006 issue of Consumer Reports has a feature article:
"The Truth About Outlet Stores" Find out what you're really
buying; Which offer quality & value and which don't; CR shops
& rates 33 namebrand stores.
I saw this article and it was interesting. In their small price study,
they found that savings averaged about 25% (less than I would have
guessed) and the merchandise tends to be high quality. The eyeopener
for me was that lots of the stuff in outlets was made specifically for
outlets. (Maybe this is old news, I rarely shop at outlet malls.) In
Coach outlets, about 75% of the merchandise is made specifically for
the outlets.
My all time favorite outlet store was a Joan & David outlet near Santa
Fe that is long gone. They had incredible bargains on boots.
