Skin Type Solution again

"Mme. India" <mmein...@comcast.net>
I picked this up last week and I am very disappointed. Paula B.'s
recommendations make more sense to me than these. The whole idea of the 16
different skin types sounds really promising, but the recommendations for my
type (OSPW) seem virtually guaranteed to make me break out.
Her recommendations say to pick titanium dioxide in a sunscreen over
avobenzone. That's fine but titanium dioxide makes me break out and
avobenzone doesn't. Maybe I'm extremely unusual but couldn't there be ONE
recommendation for a sunscreen that doesn't contain titanium dioxide?
I already have a sunscreen I'm happy with anyway, but the recommendation to
use 7 different products at a time on my extremely sensitive skin makes no
sense to me. I am supposed to use salicylic acid, hydroquinone and retinol
EVERY DAY (most of them twice a day)?
I am trying a few of her reccs, one at a time, but I am really sorry I spent
the money on this. I'm also annoyed that most of her product reccs are to
products she has financial ties with. They may very well still be good
products but at least Paula B. gives many options beyond her own.

How does she have financial ties to the products? I keep carrying the
book around with me thinking I will get one great new idea for my skin
type. Nothing is standing out so far.

It says in chapter one that she "works with" over 36 companies, and "why
wouldn't I recommend products that I have already tested"? And then it
looks to me like the bulk of the products being recommended (and I only read
a few of the skin types, maybe I'm wrong) are from Aveeno, Neutrogena, Olay
and Philosophy. Maybe I'm wrong and these are just the lines she likes the
best, but I am suspicious. Especially since I used the Philosophy stuff
that she recommends coincidentally last year and it did absolutely nothing
for me.
I am trying her other suggestions one at a time and will report my results.

There were quite a few from the same company for my skin type so I guess
it wasn't coincidental.
"MaureyL" <Maur...@aol.com>
If you go to her website you can click on a link to companies where you
order the skincare she recommends. I can hardly believe that she has
set that up out of the goodness of her heart.
Having said that, you cannot get the book for love or money here in the
UK yet. I'm dying to "type" myself!!
"Mme. India" <mmein...@comcast.net>
Maurey, if you want to send me your address I'd be happy to mail my copy of
the book to you. (Audrey and Jean will vouch for me as a real, normal
person.) Buying this book is a waste of money as any one individual person
will use at most 1/8 of it.

Sorry to follow up on my own post, but has anyone seen the YSL Muse bag in

hate everything in person that I like in photos and vice versa.

Jean
"Mme. India" <mmein...@comcast.net>
Thanks, ladies, you are among my favorite AFers and it is good to be back!
Jean, someday we will get to go shopping together!
Audrey, I did not get the bag yet. I have been doing an unbelievable amount
of research (ie, every waking hour). It is amazing how different bags look
online vs. in real life.
After a trip to my local upscale mall to scout out bags in person, I have
fallen in love with the Louis Vuitton Suhali Fabuleuse (in black, as I have
small kids, though I love the white too), but at $3,200 it was more than I
intended to spend. The saleswoman almost talked me into purchasing it then
and there but my husband really wants to surprise me. (He wanted me to
surprise him at holiday time with a guitar, and was going out to buy it
himself to give me to give to him, but I had already purchased one.
Fortunately I have more self control!) Also it would have been a credit
card purchase and I just paid off all my cards.
I am dropping hints left and right about this one, but if he comes up with
something else I am going to start a "drawer fund" for it. The saleswoman
says there are only 126 of them, at least in black, which I find hard to
believe, but I am lucky to live in an area where LV is very accessible so if
one of them is gone when I'm ready, I'll find another.
I also haven't ruled out a smaller bag in this line (maybe an Ingenieux or
Epanoui) but the price differential is so little that I think I'm better off
saving up for the Fabuleuse (or saving up the difference).
The other possible contender is the Louis Vuitton monogram charm Cabas bag.
I was originally interested in the Linda Scarf bag and sent my mother to
scope it out for me. She came back and said it was gorgeous but it turns
out she was looking at was the monogram charm Cabas, not the Linda Scarf. I
found out the Linda Scarf is $5,000 and I don't want to spend that much.
Even if I did I would want an Hermes for that price. Plus the Linda Scarf
is starting to look too gaudy to me.
My LV store and counter didn't have any of this line, so I have to get to my
mother's store to check it out. It is about a thousand less than the Suhali
which is good, but it is smaller and trendier, not as classic. I realize as
I'm writing this that the Suhali Fabuleuse is the one that really made my
heart beat faster!
I also really like a couple of Fendis (the B. Fendi in tan and black patent
leather comes to mind), but Fendi deep discounts their bags when they go out
of style. If I am going to pay full retail I want it to be something that
will hold its value.

The Suhali leather bags are all so beautiful and I don't think you'd
tire of them. The Linda Scarf and the charm Cabas don't seem as
practical. You need to get the size you want or you will always regret
it.

You're 100% right. The thrill I got when seeing this bag was like nothing
I've ever gotten from a fashion item before, including the Hermes Kelly I
saw, and I could use it every single day for the rest of my life if I
wanted.
I have always been a "big bag" person. I also realized I better let him
know how much I love this one or I am risking him getting me something else,
and then spoiling his present if I save up for and buy the Fabuleux (just
found out I was spelling it wrong) myself.
I just dropped another hint and he said sweetly, "You'd better tell me
exactly what you want or I might get the wrong thing." So I did and he
didn't balk at the price, which is promising. (I guess he saw me looking at
the Hermes bags when we were on vacation and figures this is comparitively
reasonable.)
I'm sure I could always get a Linda scarf or a Cabas charm from a reputable
reseller eventually when people tire of them if I still want it! But both
of those bags are going to look "so 2006" some day.

Specifically write down size, shape and color and leave it where he'll
see it: just the idea of receiving it will be a suprise.

Maurey, just saw your response and e–mailed you.
Audrey, I'm in a handbag quandary again. DH had to go to our local luxury
mall yesterday because of problems with his I–Pod, so I accompanied him. He
said, "Take me in the LV store and show me what you like."
They had the Suhali Fabuleux in both black and white. She put them down on
the counter next to each other. DH didn't balk at the price at all but he
looked at me and said, "I really don't like the black one, the white one is
much more elegant."
It wasn't just him saying this. Before he opened his mouth, side by side the
black one looked awkward and gaudy, the white one looked perfect. For my
lifestyle I cannot justify $3,250 on a white bag, it would get filthy
instantly.
They also had the Linda Scarf and I didn't like it in person. They had
another monogram charm bag, not the Cabas, and I didn't like that one
either.
I don't know what to do except to hunt down the red and blue ones and see
how I feel about them, visit the Hermes Kellys again, and/or keep looking.
I did look at some of the other "it" bags yesterday (Balenciaga, Chloe, Marc
Jacobs) and they did nothing for me at all. I really liked the Mulberry but
they are not enough of a splurge in this case. I did not go in Chanel
because my kids were eating potato chips at the time.
I also was going to buy myself a Kooba Ginger in Butter as a smaller
splurge–– I saw this online and loved it–– but in person it was downright
ugly. I like the Celine perforated Boogy on NM's site but they didn't have
it at the mall.
I found a pretty blue and white spring bag in the Cole Haan store too but by
then I was exhausted. DH has to go back to the mall today because the
solution he purchased didn't work but I am too exhausted and ill
(bronchitis) to accompany him. Hmm, maybe I better look at the Suhali in
black again when I'm not sick.
I am not in a hurry at all, am enjoying the hunt, except for the fact that
my sister is having a graduation party next month and my mother would love
for me to have a great bag to show a couple of my cousins who are always
lording their exceptionally expensive designer bags over the rest of the
family!

You need the bag to be black. There is such a small window of time for
white handbags IMO. That's why I didn't use the Gucci flora print I
have often enough. The pretty blue and white Cole Haan may be just the
right handbag for you now and you may want to wait. I haven't seen the
YSL in person but I will be in SF in a few weeks so I will take my
alt.fashion buddies and we'll check out bags for you. Here we are all
personal shoppers.
