Convertible Hat?

Martha Gallagher <ma...@patriot.net>
No, not one that turns into stadium seating.
Anyone have any suggestions for a hat to wear driving now that top down
season is upon us?
I love driving w/ the top down (silver Miata), but as a freckly
Irish/German, I can't take too much sun. I need something that will block
the sun and stay on (my sister suggested the Indiana Jones stapler trick,
but I thought there's got to be a better way) and it would probably be
better if it didn't interfere w/ visibility.
Thanks,
Martha

Most broad–brimmed hats will work as long as they've got a strap under
the chin. I have a big straw hat I like, and I also keep a visor in
the convertible just in case. It's got an adjustable back so I can get
it tight enough not to blow off, BUT it's not as good at sun protection
since I've got short hair, and a visor doesn't do anything to keep the
back of my neck from getting sunburned.
I found a neat light–cotton broadbrimmed hat someplace that somehow
folds in on itself to fit into a tiny little bag. It's got a wire core
to give the brim shape, like an underwire bra, but it collapses
figure–8 style in on itself, quite novel and handy to throw in a
suitcase or beach bag.
My husband has an "ultimate hat" (ultimatehat.com) which has an
interesting double strap. It can either tie under your chin, or go back
under the bulge at the back of your skull like a mountie hat. That may
not be quite as secure in a high wind, but it's less dorky–looking.
He's got the "original", but I see that now they have a lot more
options.

I have had red Miata for over 8 years........ love it.
As for hats, not really a chin strap sort of person, so have always
steered myself toward ball caps. Have to find just the right one that
will fit securely, but I have two that I keep in the car. Also, my car
looks like a drug store on wheels: sunblock, hand lotion, lip balm,
hair clips, barretts, headbands, driving gloves, and one or two
jackets/sweaters or sweatshirts in the back!

We still own the navy blue M edition 1996 Miata. It has been passed
back and forth between son and older daughter. She always wore baseball
caps when driving it with the top down. He had some horrible sunburns
on his neck when he thought it wasn't sunny.

My favorite hat is by the Tilley company–– they make all kinds of
travel clothing and hats that are specifically designed for high UV
protection (the brim covers your neck, too). The hat is washable, has a
wind cord, and fits perfectly. I also bought one for my father, who is
a natural redhead and similarly concerned about sun protection. I've
worn this hat in all but the coldest weather.
I've only ever seen the one I bought in person (at an "outdoor gear"
store near where I live)–– but it looks like the tilley.com website has
different styles for men and women, including some fancier ones.

I love hats! The problem is they're often too dressy for my walks with
the kids, sports events etc. How about this one? Search for "crushable
straw hat" from sierratradingpost.com
