Calling Cofarb! Leather question, again!

"Jamie" <zuschlag–sequ...@tds.net>
So, today, in the truck, I rounded a corner and dumped probably a cup of
coke on my Stone Mountain leather hobo bag. It's tan and I love it so I'm
wondering if I'm stuck with stains from the sugar or if I can swipe it clean
with something and hope to remove them.
Also, I've not really paid attention in the past to maintaining my leather
purses because I live in a very warm, humid climate, and, well, the bags
pretty much take care of themselves. But...I pulled another Stone Mountain
tan leather purse out of my closet recently and the leather is feeling much
less pliable – just not as soft as it did. I'm willing to do the work
involved to save these bags and would like the advice again please!
Thank you!

I noticed last year that a couple of bags I bought, and some Stone
Mountain bags I looked at in stores, were a bonded leather: a thin
layer of leather bonded to PVC vinyl. I wonder if that wears
differently than regular leather? I have a green Anne Taylor bag I
bought last year that's a bonded leather, I need to drag that out and
see if its texture has changed any. I'm not sure how you'd get the
stains off your bag, or whether the bonded leather––if indeed that's
what you have––would be treated any differently. Probably not, since
the surface is still leather, but that's just a guess.

How did you determine that it was bonded leather? Because this certainly
felt real. But your speculation could explain the difference in wear and
pliability.

I think it had a label that said leather and PVC. But it's tricky, I
remember seeing some bags that FELT like leather, but didn't have a tag
proclaiming they were. I found them at some on–line vendor which
listed the PVC. I'm sorry I don't remember the details, this was a
year ago. I did pull out my Anne Taylor bag, and it doesn't feel any
different to me than last year.
