OT: Emotional Day

"David RL Gärtner, RMT" <derbarb...@gmail.com>
that's what today has been. the long and the short of it is that
i am now the proud owner of my grandmother's carnival glass that
i've been eyeing since i was a child. i haven't yet worked out
the payment – which will be split 3 ways among my grandmother's
children. suffice it to say, this collection is the most
expensive thing i own (besides my car).
i'll post pictures when i get around to taking them.

I love carnival glass. It is a beautiful memory. I just had to make a
phone call to a friend who lost her husband last week. It was sort of a
business call for our service group and I thought it would be the
hardest phone call to make. It actually made me feel good afterward
because I just wanted to connect with her. The call itself involved a
change of date for an event where her daughter had signed up to help and
we both decided it would be good for the girl to spend a few hours
helping at a children's race on Saturday.

I hope you enjoy it, David. (And I hope you will actually use it, too.
Life's too short to save everything for a more "special" occasion.)

p.s. Selling just a few vintage items on ebay. I spent a long time writing
the description of the Valentino dress, so I'd love a.f.ers to read it even
though it's a small size. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZcofarbQQhtZ–1

i agree. but i just don't think it's practical to use this glass
for everyday ware.

I didn't know what Carnival Glass was, so I googled, and found this
article.

If you have one, don't tell the relatives!
Enjoy!

no, i don't have one of those. but one of the reasons that i
wanted the glass was that it was to be packed up and shipped back
to Corpus Christi where it was to be sold to a collector (ie:
someone who's not a member of my family). i didn't want that to
happen. i have several pieces including a decanter and five (one
doesn't match) small "goblets" or licquer glasses, sorta like
these: http://www.ddoty.com/Graphics/ImpGrpWineSet.jpg
they're in almost perfect condition (the stopper is slightly
chipped). and i'm not going to sell the things that i have –
ever. God willing, they'll be a part of my family for many more
years to come.

i wondered if someone would get that impression from the title!

I, too have a few very valuable things that belonged to my grand– and
great–grandmothers, and some that are somewhat valuable. I would never
dream of selling them, as they are part of my family heritage. I
also have some things that are worth nothing other than my own
sentimental feelings. I cherish these items no less than the valuable
ones.

That's a beautiful set. Definitely hang on to them. I have a few
things from my mother that will hopefully be passed on to my children.

David,
I was just reading your post and saw you mention Corpus Christi...are you
anywhere near there?
Corpus is my hometown but I am living in SC right now, it was nice to hear
a mention of hom.

But it really does all depend on how much *stuff* they all had. We
have a few of my grandmother's things that I love –– a woven pottery
basket and bowl (it was originally a set of 4; mom z"l had the other
two); brass candlesticks from the turn of the century, some Stangl
pieces, an ornate cigarette box and ashtray decorated with angels from
"occupied Japan" –– as well as some of my late MIL's things (her teacup
collection which, well, isn't me). But I also have my *stuff* There
just isn't room for all that much more! So I do understand people
partiing with some of these things.

i don't live there now. but i did live there between the ages of
10 and 18. i went to Menger Elementary and Sanders Elementary,
Tom Browne Jr High, and Carroll High School, as well as Flour
Bluff High School for a little bit.
i hardly visit there anymore – tho i was there last summer to
help bury Baju (my grandmother – that's the name i gave her when
i was 4). tho i do have a standing invitation from my 8th grade
English teacher. she asked for me to come by the school if i
ever happen to be in town during school hours to maybe talk to
her class and tell them that there is life outside of school and
that children really do grow up to be successful adults. i
really do want to do it; however i'd have to have a couple days
off during the week (and i work on commission).
