Where are Coach handbags made?

<em...@email.com>
All,
I'm new to the designer world. If I were to look for a Coach handbag on
someplace like eBay, if they say "Made in Italy" is that a sign that it's a
knockoff? I vaguely remember someone mentioning once that Coach is only
made in America.
So, IOW, how does one tell if a Coach product is a knock–off vs. the real
deal? I'm sure there are some sellers out there who are selling the real
deal, but I'm also sure there are many out there who are trying to pass off
knockoffs as the real deal as well. Any pointers?
Thanks a bunch!

As far as I know Coach is only made in China.

Study the bags on the coach website and at the coach counters. I've
never seen a decent coach knockoff. It's pretty easy to pick out a
fake. But you have to be careful to check the feedback of the seller.
Sometimes the pictures they show aren't the same item they send. They
might show you a pic of an authentic coach but then send you a bad
replica. That happened to me once.
Thanks a bunch!

To me, Coach has a special feel to the leather that knock–offs just cannot duplicate.

I actually do own one good Coach knock–off, so they're out there. I
bought it at Filene's Basement (IIRC) more than 15 years ago, used it
extensively, and it still looks great; the leather is similar (if not
identical) to Coach of that era. In fact, I was using it one day when
I wandered into a Coach store, and the SA was gushing about how it was
one of her favorite Coach styles, and she was sorry it had been
discontinued.

If you bought it at Filene's Basement then it's most likely the real deal.

Some of the previous lines were made in Italy, such as Madison and
Gramercy, and IIRC some of the Sonoma line. I couldn't say if there are
any others currently made there, but I do know about those because I have
some of them. :)
IMHO most of the Coach knockoffs these days are ones trying to copy the
signature line. Those are relatively easy to spot, again IMHO, because
the C's rarely line up or look professional.
Once I did see a knockoff of the classic leather Coach bag, but I knew
right off it wasn't a real one because I have *never* seen Coach make a
bag with one of those big lumpy velcro–tab–top cell phone pockets right
on the outside front of the bag. Yuck.
If you are looking for a good ebay Coach seller, check out maerim –– I've
bought lots of Coach from her (and even a used Marc Jacobs bag) and have
always received completely authentic bags in good condition.
