OT: Great moments in computing history

Webmaster (not me!) reads log, catches GM computer Googling "How To

Noticed they're still using Windows 2000.

I don't get it? What's the joke here? I use Windows 2000 whenever I
can since XP by design does not work right with the software I run
(MicroSoft trying to force me to upgrade all my software by removing
some of the backwards compatability functionality from XP). Now if
you said they were using Windows98 or WindowsME, then I would agree
with you. But Windows2000 is still a very viable operating system.

It's not that they use Windows 2000, it's that GM would be Googling
"How To Generate Revenue."
If you didn't know, GM managed to lose almost $15 a share over the
past 12 months. They're down to about $21 a share.
IMHO, given the losses, it's very appropriate that they Googled "How
To Generate Revenue."

not work right with the software I run (MicroSoft trying to force
me to upgrade all my software by removing some of the

What happens when developers use the deprecated interfaces from 15
years ago.
HP, on the other hand, decided my scanner was old enough they didn't
need to write drivers for it any more when WinXP came out. I decided
to get a newer/better/cheaper scanner. (Before you ask.... Xerox this
time.)
But Windows2000 is still a very viable operating system.
We had to upgrade everything at work because Microsoft has stopped
supporting Win2000.
They gave us considerably faster boxes at the same time.

Not true. They are still supporting 2k until the end of this year at
the earliest. I know because we were on the phone with them with some
weird issues on our 2k domain in Jan.
That being said, it's prudent to ditch Windows completely – Apple makes
a nice OS and hardware that is quite competitive and in many ways better
than anything MS has ever made.

Only if you have "extended support."

Guess we're on extended support. Either way, support SUCKED. We're in
the USA. Called, got a nice Indian lady who took our info and
transferred us to another Indian gentleman. The line quality was
horrible – delays and the language barrier was tough. After explaining
things 3 times, he got what we were asking. Remoted into our system and
did some stuff. Then transferred us to his colleague in South Carolina
who spoke perfect Southern English. Had us fixed in 2 more hours after
we explained the problem to him one time.
Contrast that with my 2 experiences calling Apple:
1) Called and spoke with someone who spoke perfect Californinan English.
Had me speak to an engineer who worked on that area (keyboard).
Problem resolved.
2) Called and spoke with someone who spoke perfect Canadian English 'eh.
Explained my problem and had a box on its way to me (laptop) for the
next day.
Or my constant experiences calling IBM:
Call them and get someone in Atlanta that speaks Southern English.
Explain problem and get parts within 4 hours or the next day.
