Can lipstick kill us...one way or another?

"EMiriamD" <emiri...@gmail.com>
I found this info debunking on Paula's newsletter pretty informative
but this part really cracked me up––she really doesn't know us
alt.fashionites AT ALL:
"Urbanlegends.com went further to expose one other relentless lipstick
myth. Have you heard this one–that the average woman who wears
lipstick throughout her life will ingest between 4 and 6 pounds of
lipstick? The improbability of this tall (and stomach–turning) tale
leaves no room for doubt: it isn't possible. Think about it this way.
The average tube of lipstick contains about 0.15 ounce of product, so
if a woman were eating 5 pounds of the stuff that would be the
equivalent of 530 whole entire tubes. As urbanlegends.com states, "The
average woman isn't even likely to own [530] lipsticks during her
lifetime, let alone use them right down to their nubs, with none of her
lip rouge ever being kissed off, left on the edge of her coffee mug" or
fork, spoon, or wiped off on a Kleenex. "
....the average woman isn't even likely to own 530 lipsticks in her
lifetime...
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha...etc.
"Vicki in DC" <Nickycharles2...@yahoo.com>
Hell, many of us probably own 530 lipsticks in the *here and now* and
gawd knows how many more over a lifetime. And if lipgloss counts too
there may be no way to count that high......
Thanks for the laugh EMD! Now I know why I never go to her site or buy
her books anymore.

That is a good laugh. Nail polish and eyeshadows can run a close
second to that too.
I personally feel that I have been creating a cloud over my head of
hairspray ingredients (and I am sure those are just as hazardous as
lipstick ingredients) which will result in me falling over one day with
the Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine Spray still in my right hand.

Shrug. It sounds right to me. I think that women here represent the
extreme. As a guess, I'd doubt that most women in the US or Canada
(Begoun's audience) own more than 5 lipsticks at any given time. Mom
generally had *her* shade of lipstick, and that was that. And even
here ... yeah, lots of us own a lot of lipsticks. How many of us have
ever FINISHED one. (I have, BTW)

I've finished several lipsticks. The Hermes rouge ones especially the
limited edition light one was just too small for me. If I like a
lipstick a lot it will become the color for the season. Usually I
alternate between two. This winter it has been Clinique buttershine rum
kiss or pink toffee. When I want a red there is always a Fresh red
velvet and Lola rush for a gloss. The Nordstrom colored Walker style
bags were a great investment. I have three for the lipsticks in
rotation, the regular lipsticks, tiny glosses and larger glosses. I've
already bought at least four for spring but I know the Kanebo anthurium
will be my color of choice most of the time.
Then there are all of the lonely lipsticks and lip palettes. I do love
them all but they rarely come out of the drawers or makeup box. Chanel
perplex is still my color when I wear lavender or purple. I have all of
those Bobbi Brown lip shimmers that now seem passe to me but yet I hang
on to them.
You are right, Barbara, about the majority of women. My mom wore one
Revlon color, one color of Maybelline pencil for her brows, one
foundation and that was it. The lipstick doubled as rouge.

I beg to differ.. they own a lot more than that but have not liked
what they saw when they wore them. at any given time.. women across all
age groups might find about 20 or so lipsticks/glosses/balms in their
drawers, cupboards and handbags
I know a friend who only wore one lip color.. Arden's some shade of
pink.. whatever the name. HOWEVER she had a ton of others from gwp that
she never wore.. or wore once.. (red)
we ditched those. I got her into trying different brands and different
finishes and this "no makeup woman" carries a lipstick with her as well
as the same shade at home in different colors
they have forgotten about them, not liked the finish, taste or
coverage

I agree, as well. The majority of women I know wear nothing more than a
little powder and a colorless lip balm unless it's a special occasion
and even then, they're so used to not wearing makeup that the small
amounts they put on are unnoticeable. I know one person who's only a
couple of years younger than I am (I'm 43) who has the same small
cosmetics bag containing the same cosmetics she had in college. I've
only seen her wear one slightly pinky beige lipstick. I don't think it's
all that common to have more than 5 tubes of lipstick. I may have more
than that in my desk drawer at work alone, but if I were like most
people then I wouldn't be posting to a newsgroup full of cosmetic
junkies!

I'm more a fashion person that a makeup person, and while I do own a
lot more than five lipsticks, in reality I only use about one or two
lipsticks per season. My makeup bag is full of things I don't use,
including extra lipsticks choices just in case.
I have met a lot of women who are pretty much the same....lots of
choices with one or two real favorites that account for about 99% of
use. It seems that nowadays the idea that appeals mostly to women, in
regards to makeup, is the perception of unlimited choices. Maybe the
women of yesteryear had it right since they were happy to "limit"
themselves to their one reliable, preferred choice sparing themselves a
lot of unnecessary expense. On the other hand, that frugal outlook is
not what keeps the economy of this country going.

I agree Barbara. The women here aren't the average woman. Dissing Paula
for making that statement is silly. I own a LOT of lipsticks and as Stevie
said most of them I don't use for one reason or another. I too go in phases
and tend to stick to the same one or two. In fact right now I'm not really
wearing lipstick but prefer a nude lip–gloss and lip liner.
I probably will own more then 500 lipsticks/lipglosses in my lifetime but I
am by no means a representative of the average consumer. I go to extremes
with most things fashion and shopping. :)
I am glad Paula posted that in her newsletter. She has been very
informative in my skincare and makeup life. In fact I do like some of her
products they are very very gentle on my sensitive skin but I do not agree
with all of her reviews. I do think she is a valuable tool though.
"val189" <gwehr...@bellsouth.net>
Most of my female friends (the males haven't yet admitted it) own about
3 on average and prob. stick to these for years.
I finished one lately – with the brush, I got every smidgen out of the
tube. Only took about 8 years.
My mother's fave was a Hazel Bishop or HR, something like ''Deep Pink'
– wore it regardless of garment or season. It was probably considered
frivolous to own more than one at a time.
530 in a lifetime? Absurd. Altho someone here once stated she had over
300 – arranged by shade in shoeboxes.
wendyandbr...@webtv.net (Wendy)
Is 500 lipsticks in a lifetime really that absurd for someone who uses
lipstick everyday? If you added glosses/balms to the count I wouldn't
consider it absurd at all. 500 lipsticks in 50 years is only 10 a year.
So if you start buying when you are 16 and buy lipstick until you are 66
(or older) why would that be so crazy? Ten lipsticks a year? If you buy
2 or 3 colors every season that seems perfectly reasonable.

I agree that Paula is a valuable tool and I think that's all she's
trying to be. I have quite a few of her products and like most of
them and I tend to agree with her reviews, but what I like most is
that she explains *why* she doesn't like something (or why she does),
so that you can put that in perspective. If she mentions that a
product has a particular texture that she doesn't care for, but you
happen to think is great, you know that her negative review is a
positive one for you. Obviously, that's much more helpful that a
review that says the product has a horrible texture.
I also think she's fair when talking about a product that is well
made, but expensive, because she has no problem with people buying
expensive product as long as they know what they're buying. If you
want to spend $35 on a lipstick or a compact that you could get for $7
from another brand, but love the beautiful case, that's fine.
I got turned on to her when I was suffering from chapped lips and
slathering on Blistex and Carmex and wondering why they never really
healed. The whole marketing idea of "medicated" products and how the
tingling tells you it's working, or the cooling sensation, just makes
me shake my head now. I haven't had a problem with chapped lips since
and I've turned a few friends around, but I have one friend that
absolutely insists that the menthol in her balm is killing "germs" and
that's helping her chapping, so she needs to use the balm more.

That might've been me <sheepish grin> I have a set of really snazzy

wear a different color almost every day and mix em up a lot, too, so it
doesn't seem *that* extravagant. I also have a minor lip color
addition.
Some people smoke crack, I buy lipsticks.

I'm guessing I have 100 right now. I went from nail polish, which I used to
require at all times, to lipsticks and glosses. I can't even easily access
all that I have as some are temporarily put aside for storage purposes. But
I can say that I'm now shopping out of my stash and it's wonderful because I
know that I love almost every one (unlike buying new) and am constantly
happy to find one I forgot about! Currently beginning to use again the
Stila summer gloss quad that I bought last(?) year.
If lipstick doesn't get me – something else will!
