(GROSS WARNING!) Help cleaning Nomination bracelets!

"Tungsten" <Whitehall.Ma...@gmail.com>
I'm going to say it again, before you start reading...this is kind of
gross...so turn back now if alluding to being sick makes you also feel
ill.
Okay. If you're still with me, please help if you can!
I went out with some friends last night and, lo and behold, one of them
didn't hold her liquor too well. Needless to say, I got nailed and
rushed home to shower and wash everything. After some vigorous
soaking, pre–treating and laundering, my clothes seem to be fine.
However, I discovered this evening that my beloved Nomination bracelets
still reek (despite my attempt to remedy earlier by washing them with
some liquid Ivory soap). They're stainless steel and I have absolutely
no idea what to do. Does anyone know any ways to remove the odor from
them? They are really special to me (in fact I only take them off when
at home) so I don't want to damage them; however, I can't possibly wear
them with even the faintest trace of that smell. HELP!!!
Grateful for any advice,
Heather

Can you contact the manufacturer to ask if they can be cleaned in an
ultrasonic cleaner and/or amonia? If they say it's okay, I'd try that. (If
you don't own an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, maybe you have a relationship
with a jewelry store where they would clean the bracelet for you. <I
wouldn't mention the puke part.>) For diamond jewelry, I use a mixture of
non–sudsing amonia and water, or sometimes straight amonia. You might want
to start with sudsy amonia, followed by non–sudsing. I don't think you can
get rid of that smell without submerging the bracelet in something strong.
Will you report back? It's a gross thread but "life (and other stuff) comes
at ya" and it's better to be informed than not.

p.s. Selling just a few vintage items on ebay. I spent a long time writing
the description of the Valentino dress, so I'd love a.f.ers to read it even
though it's a small size. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZcofarbQQhtZ–1

Vinegar is an odor neutralizer. or a baking soda + water bath. Good luck.
The odor remains because there is some bacteria still on it. Really swish
it around to dislodge any remaining matter. If you have a very soft brush
that will not scratch the metal. I know its gross but odor = bacteria and
you don't want to wear a bacteria bracelet ;p
Good luck

Heather:
It's nice to see you posting! I'd like to hear a report back too
because I ebayed 2 nomination charm watches a couple of years ago and
would like to know how to safely clean them if gross things come into
contact with them. The ultrasonic sounds like it may work but I could
see it causing more delicate or not securely glued/soldered charms to
fall apart. Hopefully I'm wrong!
Thanks,
Vicki

Thanks Vicki (it's nice to be posting and checking in again!), cofarb
and blackacregirl for the replies. To update everyone before I run to
work: last night I did a serious overnight soak with baking soda and
water. The bracelets are currently air–drying and I'll post whether or
not it did anything. I also e–mailed the company to ask about "deep
cleaning" the bracelets safely; still waiting on a reply. Worst case
scenario, I have a great relationship with the store where I buy all of
my charms, so I could always take the bracelets there and have them
clean them. It's just a matter of finding some time to squeeze that
into my schedule – so fingers crossed the baking soda bath might have
worked!
I'll report back...

Okay everyone! Update as promised: the baking soda/water bath worked!
The bracelets look (and, uh, smell) as good as new. Here's what I did:
I took both of them and placed them on a glass that was a little bigger
than my wrist – the idea being that the crevices of the bracelet, when
stretched, were also getting cleaned out. I left them on the glass,
soaking in a bigger glass that had the baking soda and water mixture.
I had them like that for a few hours, and then I rinsed them and
inverted them to face the other way out and repeated the same thing
overnight. I rinsed them well and then left them on the glass to
air–dry. Good as new – insert sigh of relief here!
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm glad this worked so I didn't have
to go into more drastic measures!

I bring my stainless steel watch to the jewlers to be cleaned. I think they
use that steam spray. All I know is it gets *all* the dirt out of the
crevices. HTH

Great news, Heather! (Brilliant idea to stretch the bracelet to your
wrist's size, too!)
