OT: Indian movies – what next?

Debbie the Dogged <seesigforrealaddr...@mouse–potato.com>
David and other Indian movie afficianados – I've now watched and enjoyed
"I Have Found It" (both the mind–aching version with the surreal
subtitles and the much more understandable Kino version) and Bride and
Predjudice, and am ready for many more forays into Indian cinema. What
other movies should be on my list?
Thanks!

and i hear that "Swades" is very good. it stars Shahrukh Khan –
he's a big Bollywood star currently. oh, and look for titles
starring Priety Zinta – i like her. i checked her imdb.com
profile and it said that she dropped out of medical school to
pursue an acting career. she stars in Veer–Zaara, et al.

Thanks! Netflix has them all, including Swades, so they're now in my
queue. The local little video store had Bend it Like Beckham and Hum
Dil De Chuke Sanam (Straight from the Heart) so I rented those
yesterday. It's great to have a new frontier (for me – I did some
research and had no idea India had such a huge and well–established film
industry – it's been around at least as long as Hollywood).

I am also taken with Bollywood. I love the Indian movies, although I don't
watch many because I try not to make DH sit through them (it's an individual
taste!). I'll be interested in this movie list as well.

Debbie,
Here's a link to a site that I look at frequently. It's gossipy but fun and
gives you the low–down of some of the stars and their interactions.

I hope I didn't take it from someone here without giving credit but I just
can't remember; I don't think so.

I realize this doesn't exactly follow the theme of the thread but it's
certainly a movie I'll want to see. Something out of the norm for me as I
don't very often look forward to any movie coming...

Dennis!! I can't wait for this one either!! I keep watching the previews
over and over and I just love Anthony Hopkins! I'm interested in the story
as well. It hasn't gotten very much hype though; I'm thinking it won't
appeal to a broad audience unless word of mouth spreads it. Let's hope
because I don't see how it can be bad!

I agree. WIth Hopkins and an interesting story it should be a good movie.
Things have been rather quiet about it all yet once it hits I'm sure it'll
hit big. One of those ones just waiting to be seen...

I caught the last half of "Bride and Prejudice" on cable last weekend.

You should rent the DVD so you can see the whole thing, plus the extras
are great! The director (the same woman who directed Bend It Like
Beckham, which I just finished watching and also highly recommend) is a
hoot, and her director's commentaries are a lot of fun, plus educational
on things Indian.

yes, i noticed that in the Beckham special features – a recipe
for Aloo Gobi – which is excellent, BTW. just cut the salt down
to 1/2 teaspoon. 2t is just way too much.

Don't know about the rest of you, but as I've been gazing at his pics,
it occurs to me – he'd make a great James Bond. I mean, think about it
– with the history and ties between GB and India, why not a James Bond
of Indian ancestry? I think it would be great casting!

Thank you Jamie. I'll keep an eye out for the release and likely pick one up
when it hits the local video stores here. "The World's Fastest Indian" with
Anthony Hopkins starring already sounds interesting. But the New Zealand
connection is also something which caught my eye and a bit of history screams
out. The late Bruce McLaren was from there and although I'm a die hard
Williams fan, McLaren is still the team to beat before you're done the day...
