Childrens' Charm Bracelets?

"Emily" <egs...@aol.com>
I was thinking of giving my friend's 5 year old daughter a classic
charm bracelet...as her godmother I thought it might be fun/nice to
give her something special. Does anyone know of any reputable sources
for little girls' charm bracelets? Maybe some place like Ross Simons?
I'm looking for the classic dangling charm bracelet.
So far I've found a couple online, but wouldn't mind checking out some
others for comparison. Any leads would be appreciated! I want to find
something of good quality that won't break or cause an allergic
reaction, but not outrageously expensive because she is 5 after all and
she will outgrow it.
Here's one of the bracelets I found:
http://www.fortunoff.com/product.asp?pf_id=177700747&sea_state=
Some questions:
1) Is it stupid to give her a bracelet at all because she is 5 and
probably going to be outgrowing it soon? I'm not worried about her
ruining jewelry, she is obsessively careful with her posessions. :)
2) Do little girls still like charm bracelets? I'm just going by on
what I thought was cool at that age, but that was 30 years ago. :) She
just finished an ice skating program and absolutely loved it, so I
thought it'd be cool to get her a little ice skate charm to commemorate
it. Maybe I'm wrong though.
Anyway, any feedback would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Have you asked your friend about it?
I have––and cherish––two charm bracelets that were given to me when I was a
child, but I am sure I was older than 5, and equally certain that my mother
kept them in her jewelry box for safekeeping. The skating charm is a great
idea though. How about buying a neck chain for it so it could be worn as a
pendant? (The necklace could be displayed hanging from a hook on the wall
when she isn't wearing it.) She could put it on a larger chain later on, and
would always have the option of putting it on a bracelet too.

My 8 year old niece just requested a traditional charm bracelet for
Christmas. I did her initials in rhinestone letters, and a faith, hope and
charity trio. I make jewelry so I did it myself. Oh, it was in sterling
silver. I have done something similar for her older sister a few years ago
and I have heard that she wears it whenever she has something "special" to
go to. What that might be at 14 I have no idea. :)
Oh, and I put the charms on small lobster claw clasp so she can move them
around.

I gave our 9yr old granddaughter a bracelet on her birthday, along with
her first charm. The bracelet is much like the one you linked us to.
It's a bit big on her now, but she just closes it on one of the links
and seems fine with it. I tried to find a smaller one, but ran out of
time. She loves it. When our daughter married her second husband, he
came with 2 lovely girls. For their wedding, I gave the two girls both
bracelets, and then each of the three got a "sister" charm.
Now for special occasions I retrieve the bracelets (secretly via the
help of Dad & Mom/stepMom) and put charms on them. They love it.
My advice is to do it. The charms are a great story and if you go the
route of a smaller bracelet, you can always have the jeweler add links
to it to fit her wrist as she grows. In fact, I just had links added
to one of mine because it has become too full of charms and too hard to
close. Looks great, you can't even tell.

(Who has two, one gold and one silver. The silver one has way cooler
charms on it!)

You sound like an awesome grandma! :) You're right, I shouldn't worry
about the size of the bracelet, since things can always be moved to a
different bracelet or the bracelet could be extended. Now, it's just a
matter of finding the right one to start with.
What are some of the charms that you have on your bracelets? :)

I have some really cool ones on my silver bracelet... Dorothy, Toto,
the Wicked Witch, Scarecrow (with moving hands/feet) (you can see a
Wizard of Oz thing going on here!), a compass (I get lost easily!), a
convertible car, Mackinaw Bridge, a State of Michigan, a US flag with
red, white & blue rhinestones, a little purse, a hope chest that opens
and closes, a skunk (that was a Christmas gift, but don't really know
the connection with me & skunks??), a lipstick, a ruby slipper, a
charge card, an airplane, and probably a few more that I can't
remember..
On the gold one a billiard table, a Ferrari horse, a car, several "best
friend, sister, etc" charms. a golf bag, a heart, a teddy bear, a boot,
a letter C, a U of M football helmet, and a couple others that I can't
think of...

Recently, Reebok gave away charm bracelets, and a small child swallowed
a charm and died of lead poisoning. Reebok has recalled the bracelets.
While a 5–year old can be told not to swallow something, and can
understand, they often forget. You don't want her to swallow any piece
of jewelry, but be sure not to buy her cheap charms from street
vendors, flea markets or other places where you really have no idea who
is selling them. If you buy them from a reputable jeweler, at least
you can be sort of comfortable that the charm isn't lead dipped in
gold.
