were the Oscars weird this year?

"David RL Gärtner, RMT" <derbarb...@gmail.com>
granted, i only caught the last hour or so. but it seems to me
that in years past, there's usually a film that sweeps the
Oscars. there didn't seem to be any of that this year. also,
Brokeback Mountain seemed to be the likely choice for Best
Picture, but then the result was something that no one saw
coming. i mean Ang Lee for Best Director for Brokeback Mountain,
Best Actor was PSH, Best Actress Reese Witherspoon (whose
acceptance speech, BTW, was the most gracious and beautiful that
i've heard in years – YEARS, people), Cinematography Memoirs of a
Geisha, etc. it was almost like they wanted for everyone to be
happy.
and what's up with them shying away from awarding Brokeback
Mountain the Best Picture award? plenty of heterosexual–themed
movies go on to become Best Picture, why *not* a gay–themed one?
i saw Crash, and it wasn't that spectacular. so Thandi Newton
can cry, big deal. who knew that an Australian could pass for a
gay good old boy in Wyoming?
oh, and is my housemate the last person on earth who didn't know
that "Academy Award" and "Oscar" are synonymous?

David, I also liked Uma's gown this year. Nicole, I thought that was
a lovely Balenciaga, but I don't like her in light colors. I think she
gets too washed out as did Naomi Watts with her choice of a gown.
(which I thought was the worst of the group)
I loved Salma Hayek, and Sandra Bullock's black gown and Keira
KNightly was my absolute fave. Jessica Alba, always stunning.

Salma was absolutely stunning, but a little less hair flicking would've
been nice. I couldn't really focus on Sandra's gown because her hair and
Keanu on her arm looked so odd. Keanu really looked like a stuffed–shirt
to me. So many men were wearing the satin–lapel suit jacket look that
things like the guys with the matching bowties on the Oscars and the
stuffed penguins were refreshing.
I thought Kidman looked great, maybe a little PO'ed at Jon Stewart's
remark about the least talented presenters going first.
Jennifer Lopez looked orange, as usual.
Dolly Parton seemed so nervous and small–voiced at first, it was a
revelation to hear her break out with confidence and lungpower as her
song wound up.
And I'm not a FAniston, but I thought she came out swinging with that
sidelong smirk and plenty of attitude. Still not a movie star, but at
least she looked the part.
Madge <ma...@yahoo.net>
Jennifer Lopez, although she did look overly bronzed, I loved her
dress. I liked the color, and thought the dress fit her perfectly.
Salma Hayak also wore an interesting color and although I am not a fan
of asymetrical styles, I loved the swirling fabric on the bodice. The
dress flowed beautifully when she walked.
Nicole Kidman, I liked how she looked in the white dress, but I didn't
like the drape of the dress at the hem.
Jennifer Aniston looked great. I am a big fan of layered material,
and dresses that aren't too fussy.
Sandra Bullock's dress bothered me, with the cloth wrapped around her
chest that seemed an afterthought, but I liked the navy blue.
Hilary Swank, I liked her dress and thought she was very graceful as
she walked across the stage.
On the ETV pre Oscar show, Isaac Mizrahi wore huge cuff links. It
seemed that he had shortened sleeves to accomodate them.
What more can I say about George Clooney, he is a gorgeous man and
looks breathtaking in a Tux.
It snowed all day so I sat in front of the TV for hours watching all
the channels with red carpet video.
Were the Oscars weird this year?
If there are politics associated with the Oscars, as suggested by
other posters, perhaps the social/racial issues exposed by Hurricane
Katrina were expressed this year, rather than gay issues.

I was impressed with the way her dress flowed as she walked onto the stage – she seemed to be one of
the few women who might have actually "dress rehearsed" for real to see if the gown fit, how it
photographed and if it was short enough to walk comfortably in (unlike say, Jennifer Garner, who did
recover nicely, or any of the number of women with exceptionally long trains {Jennifer Aniston}).

I to thought that Reese was so gracious. Not only did brokeback get
snubbed I think they basically made fun of it all night long, from

One award that really irked me was "Best Song". I really thought
"In the Deep," from Crash (Kathleen Bird York) was best song. It was
beautiful and haunting.
The Oscar fashions this year were beautiful for the most part. I
thought Michelle Williams looked stunning in her yellow gown.Keira
Knightly was also a knock out. Nicole Kidman always looks good.
George Clooney is so handsome. I am not thrilled with his personality.
Something about him rubs me the wrong way. I really wanted to see
Matt Dillon win for supporting actor. He acted very gracious and
seemed really happy to be there.

David, the Oscars generally are "safe" choices, nothing too edgy or
controversial. For film viewers who are not bigoted it was nice to see a
movie about two men in love, a movie about a person who is
transgendered, a movie that exposes racial prejudice and movies that
were not super expensive Hollywood blockbusters sharing the honors of
nominations and awards. Crash is a fascinating movie; I plan to see it
again this week. The ensemble cast was spectacular and just bringing up
these questions about prejudice and the different reactions of the
characters was amazing. Perhaps it is a better picture than Brokeback
Mountain for its complexity. That's why the Golden Globes at least
tries to separate musicals and comedies from dramas.
Rent Crash and watch it again with an open mind.
I saw a segment on the Today Show this morning and Tim Gunn of Parsons
felt Nicole was the best dressed! I loved Salma Hayek and Felicity

How about some credit for those of us who were around two or three

"using the group for promotional purposes," we try to control spam but
sometimes it's actually OK to just ignore it. The bigger problems come

But if you're so concerned about protecting a.f., why not break out

little droopy looking up front.
I also liked Michelle Williams dress (also by Vera Wang.) I liked that
she wasn't wearing black or blah off–white. The mustard color stood
out, and in a good way. I liked the makeup as well.
When I saw Nicole Kidman's dress, it just immediately made me think of
the dresses in the window of the bridal shop down the street from where
I work. It just wasn't as unique as she what she usually wears. But,
hey, the rumor is that she will be getting married again soon, so maybe
she thought she would get that dress and have it do double duty.
I liked Jessica Alba's dress a lot. I thought the color was pretty. I

Crash's genesis was in the far better Robert Altman ensemble
film, Short Cuts, http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0108122/
I was not that impressed with Crash. OTOH, after seeing
Brokeback Mountain a second time, I was struck by the
many layers I hadn't seen at first, and by the absolutely
brilliant acting of Heath Ledger – who could silently
convey such depth of emotion. As one critic said,
Philip Seymour Hoffman inhabited the real–life Capote
character –– there was precidence for his behavior –– but
Heath Ledger created Ennis Del Mar above and beyond the
short story and screenplay.

i actually saw Crash on DVD after hearing from a friend of mine
how great a movie it was. she said that she and her husband
watched it about five times over a 2 or 3 day period, and that
they then bought the DVD and watched it a few more times. i
watched it, with an open mind, just waiting for the thing that
was supposed to hook me, but it never came.
i haven't yet seen Capote. but i dislike girly, nelly queens
IRL, and this is probably why i've avoided the movie.
i completely agree with your comments about Heath Ledger. i
haven't checked to see if it's on DVD yet, but i'm planning on
getting a copy when it comes out. i'm also going to buy the
soundtrack for each of my parents – Willie Nelson, Emmy Lou

I saw the show from nearly beginning to end. I thougth it was stiff.
I liked JS's joke about pulling down the statue to see if it made
democracy reign. No one really laughed, did they not get it?
Also, I loved that three six mafia won best song, and I LOVED how
excited they were. I am a real music lover, music of all types, and I
really think it is a great song. It has a great beat, a catchy hook,
and if you give the lyrics a listen, it is a deep social commentary on
ghetto life. I, personally prefer this to a droning cliche about how a
heart will go on, or whatever.
I didn't feel like BM's loss in best picture was a slight, I thought
Crash was better. I can say though, that if I were gay, I might feel
differently. I think that on the one hand that its being in our
everyday conscience is a step forward, but on the other hand, that
presence is mostly sort of off–color jokes. I think that is proof that
mainstream America is still WAY too homophobic, the relative success of
the picture notwithstanding.
IMHO, I thought Charlie & the Chocolate Factory whould have gotten
costumes. They had to create something from nothing there. Costumes
for a period piece have to emulate what we knew existed. Not that this
isn't difficult or immensely artistic, I just think that costuming a
fantasy is so amazing!
I liked Reese Witherspoon's speech, and she looked great (per usual).
I thought Jennifer Aniston looked great. I thought Jennifer Lopez
looked odd. I am still not too sure about Charlize Theron, that bow
was kind of over–the–top. Rachel Weisz looked better than any 6 months
pregnant woman I have ever seen!
I thougth Lauren Bacall got better as her bit wore on, but it was sort
of uncomfortable to watch.
I didn't think any of the men stood out in terms of their fashion
choices, but George Clooney stood out in terms of his overall handsome
and charming demeanor.

Jamie, it means the best song and IMO it definitely was the one from
Hustle and Flow. It's hard to be a Pimp is definitely like Chitty Chitty
Bang Bang but it has a great rhythm and beat so old ahmward may be seen in
her car singing with it if it's on one of her hip radio stations.
Hee! Again, excuse my ignorance and please see post above about not
realizing my mistake regarding which movie it was in. I did not watch the
Oscars – too busy putting children to bed and relaxing after the fact.

I wonder what Dolly looks like before she is all done up. It must take a
long time for her. I know she wears wigs but the makeup and getting into
that outfit had to take a bit of time.
She is short, and rather plain, with close cropped brownish hair.
When she wears her "clod–hoppers", jeans, and a loose shirt, she looks
dumpy and decidedly *not* glamorous.
Then she laughs, and you know it's her!

Most of all, "It's Hard to be a Pimp" was what the whole movie (Hustle
& Flow) was about. Plus, creating the song was an integral part of the
plot. I'm not a huge fan of hip hop but I just watched H&F this
weekend on DVD and –– while it took about 1/2 hour to get into –– I
enjoyed it more than I thought I would. And the song has an irrestible
hook.

she has for years. she's been quoted as saying something along
the lines of, "it takes a lot of money to look this trashy."

Jamie, don't feel bad about not knowing this year's Oscar song pick. My
kids were born in 1979, 1982 and 1984. I think almost the entire decade
of 80s music went past me when I was listening to Raffy and Bert &
Ernie.
I saw Crash this evening. It was the second time for me. The first
time I didn't realize how all of the stories would be related so it was
so much better this evening. I plan to watch Hustle and Flow this week.

But the worse moment of the night was when Diana Ossana accepted her
Oscar. Did anyone else notice her arms????? OMG, I was torn between
pity and repulsion. Why does anyone with those arms choose to wear a
sleeveless dress is beyond my comprehension. Could it be that she
didn't expect to win?? She should fire her stylist.
I was so traumatized by the sight that I have increased my weight
training routine for the arms.
some people aren't self–conscious about that sort of thing. i
noticed her arms, and i thought basically the same thing that you
did.
did anyone notice when Diana Ossana was giving her acceptance
speech, that she mentioned Annie Proulx, and said, "she's right
over there," but they didn't put the camera on Annie? i was a
little bummed, cos i've never seen a picture of her (i don't know
how to use Google, donchaknow).

She should be made to give back her Oscar for the amount of
psychological damage she did to viewers around the world. How dare
someone who uses her mind and wins the top award in her craft for it
come to Oscars not looking like Lindsay Lohan.

The best of the evening, for me, was definately Kiera Knightley. The
Vera Wang dress was gorgeous. I will be nit–pickey and that the
necklace that she was wearing, though beautiful, probably wasn't the
absolute best choice to go with the neckline of the dress.
I liked her dress but I LOVED the necklace...it was gorgeous.
When I saw Nicole Kidman's dress, it just immediately made me think of
the dresses in the window of the bridal shop down the street from where
I work. It just wasn't as unique as she what she usually wears.
I thought her dress was very much like the couture dresses she usually
wears.
In the same color palette, was Uma's dress.
Beautiful...and the detail in the middle kicked it up a notch.
I thought Reese Witherspoon's fifties–vintage dress was pretty, but too
fussy for my taste.
I liked her dress too, but I thought her hair could have used a LOT
more attention.
It looked like she pulled it back herself at the last moment.
I liked Sandra Bullock's dress. It was pretty, but basically the same
thing she usually wears to award ceremonies.
I agree that it was too generic and too safe a choice, but she is not
known for being a fashionista.
I didn't like Naomi Watt's dress at all. The color was blah, blah,
bland. Also it looked like someone ran a burlap bag through a paper
shredder. My boyfriend took one look at it and said, "She's the one who
they're all going to be making fun of tomrrow."
I totally agree, her dress was probably the most hideous dress in the
whole red carpet. What was she thinking?
I liked Salma's dress a lot, plus the color was lovely.
It was the same kind of form–fitting dress she always wears....she
knows what looks good on her. I didn't notice but I heard comments
that apparently the dress was so tight her pantyline was showing.
One of the dresses which I also liked very much was the black
bodice/silver skirt one worn by Ziyi Zhang. It was simple, yet very
elegant.
I thougth Dolly Parton looked down right scary.
I don't know if it's because she has had one plastic surgery too many
or because she is so painfully skinny...but the overall effect is not
pretty.

Audrey,
Thank you for seeing this situation exactly as I meant it!
And to everyone who explained to me that it's Hustle & Flow instead of
Crash. Just reminds me to send HF to the top of my Netflix list. I can't
wait to watch Terrence Howard!

I'm with you on this one. I could not see her arms because I saw her
smile, her joy, her excitement. I don't work out with weights but
because I've lost weight and maintained it my arms look decent. They
may, in fact, look just like Diana Ossana's. Consequently I will wear
sleeveless tops. I even wear short skirts, shorts and capris. Don't be
torn between pity and repulsion. She's probably on cloud nine. She won
and Oscar.
