As somebody who tends to do dangerous things to computers, it's best
to always keep around a backup of the "My Documents" folder (and set
everything to store in subfolders of it).

After having done it both ways, it's much better to hose up a hard
drive using DSL.
That's because I use the approach:
#1 – Install something from CD
#2 – Run its update program
#3 – Repeat steps #1 and #2 until I've installed all the CDs in the
Chuck box.
and now reinstalled EVERYTHING..
or almost..
If you use the "install on first use" paradigm, you'll invariably get
a much cleaner hard drive. <grin/duck>

*** did have one done about 2 months ago on external drive. now EVERYTHING
in my docs is being kept there.

can't get DSL.. which is sad.. I tried. I REALLY tried on that one
my geek guy suggested a linksys combo d link cable modem + router.. got any
ideas where I can find this?

Best Buy or Circuit City –– or Google to the linksys site and you can get it
on line or find it cheaper at eBay.

IIRC, you're in CA where they don't let AT&T (nee SBC nee PacBell)
have enough return to deploy Project Pronto.
Latest rumor is that Ed Whitacre is going to pick up BellSouth so he
can put most of the old AT&T back together again. He'll have
everything but the parts that went into Qwest and Verizon, as well as
the hardware manufacturing.
I tried. I REALLY tried on that one
I guess YMMV must apply to the ability to get DSL vs. cablemodem.
My cable TV company either hasn't figured out that you can make money
offering high–speed Internet access or they don't want to upgrade
their physical plant.

Standard electronics–store item but you've got to have a cable company
that does cablemodem. Not all of them do.
Your geek guy should know better than I, however.

Oh I'd be glad to pay shipping for the box of cosmetics – will take them
to our abused woman's shelter – they are grateful for ANYTHING to give
them a lift.
If you let me know the amount I could pay you through Paypal Account if
you have an account with them, or send you a check. =A0 Just let me know
and I'll send you my address. Thanks,
Donna
