OT – UGLY Figure Skating outfits??!!

"bad_kitty" <ivanaernm...@hotmail.com>
Is it me, or are the outfits worn by the figure skaters this year (esp.
the ladies) about the ugliest ever? After the men's competition last
week, with all the sequins, cut–out sleeves, spider–man spider webbing
and trailing chiffon sleeves, I thought it could not get any worse,
then there was ice dancing – how many pseudo flamenco outfits can one
take, never mind the Tammy Faye Baker–esque makeup on the ladies:
then, I saw the ladies short program. Yuck!! With the possible
exception of one Italian skater (forgot her name, but she's US former
pairs skater John Zimmerman's wife), who wore a classy white skating
dress with modest cutouts, sequins where needed, and free flowing hair,
it seemed like each ladies costume was worse than the next. And they
all looked pasty except for Sasha Cohen; perhaps they need to borrow
the makup artists for the ice dancers. For example:
– The three Japanese skaters, one one in black tights, one in a wired
white collar thing, and one in an off the shoulder reddish blackish
thing that looked faded – bad hair on all;
– The Ukranian in the Ugly orange sequined dress and bowl cut;
– Irinia Slutskaya's unbecoming black sequined yoga pants look;
– Kimmie Meisner's sequined corset/stripey dress
– Emily Hughes plain blue outfit was matronly and didn't match her
energetic skating, although perhaps she didn't have time to have a new
one made.
I swear, Sasha Cohen looks better in her red and black practice outfits
than in the wierd blue outfit she had on. She looks like a beautiful
porcelain doll and deserves a beautiful outfit to match; I would
prefer red or white. Either is a great match with a gold medal!

Yeah, the Japanese costumes were hideous.
– The Ukranian in the Ugly orange sequined dress and bowl cut;
– Irinia Slutskaya's unbecoming black sequined yoga pants look;
I really like Irina in pants. It suits her skating style perfectly, and
for some reason she looks more feminine than when she wears the
tradtional skating skirt.
– Kimmie Meisner's sequined corset/stripey dress
That was bad.
– Emily Hughes plain blue outfit was matronly and didn't match her
energetic skating, although perhaps she didn't have time to have a new

I could see her in pants, too, and looking very good. The frilly fairy
skirts don't work on her at all.

She will be wearing red tonight. It's her colour.

I liked the pants, too. I actually really liked them on the woman who
wore them in the doubles competition. When I saw them there, I
wondered if any of the women would wear them in the individual
competition. I tend to think that athletes should look like athletes
when competing. I tend to think this is why a lot of people have
trouble considering cheerleaders athletes, even when they are competing
in those competitions.

I won't continue to read the thread because I'm afraid someone will
mention results and I haven't seen how the ladies have done. The
costumes were't too bad in the ladies' short program; hopefully the
long will be OK.
The truly horrible outfits were in Ice Dancing. Good lord; there must
have been some crack–smoking involved during the design process. I
think it was the Italian team who had the horrible brown outfits
covered in glitter and big swooping tuquoise swathes of fabric. And
one of the ice dancing ladies had what was basically white fringed
pasties, along with a little fringed pasty triangle over her nether
regions. Yikes! It wasn't too many years ago that the ice dancing
teams wore simple, elegant costumes. These gaudy new getups really
detracted from the enjoyment––it was difficult to appreciate the
skating when my eye was staring at the hideous garb.

The last time there was a truly beautiful ice skating costume in the
Olympics was when Nancy Kerrigan wore the simple white outfit by Vera
Wang. Everything since has been ugly, bland or trashy. I guess the
skating world is not equipped to welcome elegance in women's costumes.

It was a nice dress. Too bad it was ruined by the horrible horse face
of the monstress above the neckline.
I remember other elegant skating dresses too. Ekaterina Gordeeva and
Michelle Kwan tend to dress well.

IMHO, the only one that should be wearing orange is the Netherlands

It's traditional enough, and at least it's red, white, and/or blue.

I've been traveling, and my taste in olympic sports runs to curling and
skiing, but apparently the skating outfits are bad enough that DW thinks we
should dress as one of the ice dancing couples for Halloween.

Well, is was beige, but other than that, I agree. I thought the gold
medal winner's outfit was pretty, but from the front, Sasha's looked
like she was wearing a diaper in the long program.
Elegance is going out with the addition of the catsuits. While it
looked really good on Irina––she has a body and style to pull it off––
it's a death knell for the fashion.

Yeah, the commentator was talking about them "pushing the envelope,"
but then said that they can do whatever as long as it suits the music.
It was horribly skimpy and barely (no pun) met the music. They would
have been better of if they were colorful, but the all white was much
too stark and you couldn't see the dancing for the glare of it all or
conversely the way they blended with the ice. Still, they won Bronze
(I said gold before in error). Someone must have been able to see
beyond that horrid costumes.
Yet, they would be ideal for Holloween once you explain who it is.
