I seldom buy clothes on eBay, since I prefer to try things on. But I
do have a pet peeve with this sort of garment, which you might keep in
mind as you do customizing. I love the bohostyle tunics, especially
the ones with seaming or banding, empire style, under the bust. But
for those of us who aren't 22year old size 4's, too often the seam or
band is set too high. Gravity has an effect, especially for older
and/or plus size women, and there's only so much uplift I can get even
with a good bra! I love the look of this style when it's made right,
but the seam has to be positioned low enough that it crosses underneath
the fullest part of the chest. I've bought a couple of tops that I
like, but in both cases I feel like I'm constantly needing to tug them
down. It's not a matter of them being too small, they're just not
proportioned well for me.
Good luck with your venture.
I'm not especially familiar with the style you are talking about, but I
wonder if instead of separate top and bottom parts joined under the bust,
the empire line could be created with something(s) that get tied to snug in
the raised waistline. There can be a single tie (thin self or other
material) attached halfway along its length, below the sternum. Then it can
be tied in back. Or two separate tie pieces can be attached several inches
below the armpits, again tied in back.
If the tunic has princess seams, you can use two sets of ties that let you
snug in the tunic on each side, so you end up with a knot or bow below each
armpit.
These aren't styles that are limited to plus sized women. They allow anyone
to adjust the waistline according to her shape and size, even if she gains
or loses a few pounds.
Good luck. Finding clothes that fit and flatter isn't easy for folks who
are outside the average size range. Sewing is the best solution. (Well,
second best. My mom used to sew my clothes. *That* was the best!)
