Temporary hair color for daughter

deb_dolit...@yahoo.com
My dishwater blonde 13 year old daughter wants to dye her hair brown
with blonde streaks. I really do not want to go down this road with her
yet unless it completely washes out after a few weeks. Are there any
products out there that fit this bill? I am all for expressing
yourself, but she is too young to be dying her hair monthly. I have
thought that I'd just let her hair be ugly for several months while it
grows up but at this age that might be too mean...
Thanks for any suggestions.

I checked out the site and the only two hair colors they recommend are
a slightly darker blonde and a copper color. Ugh. She wants to be a
dark brown.

In order to have real blonde streaks, wouldn't she have to bleach her hair
in addition to dying it? That's so damaging. My brunette son went dark
turquoise when he was that age. I think it really dried out his hair.
Dying it alone can actually improve its texture, in my experience. So
perhaps Deb's daughter could at least be convinced to just do the darkening
and forget about the streaks? (Good luck, Deb!)

choked out these words:
In order to have real blonde streaks, wouldn't she have to bleach her hair
in addition to dying it?
well, she's a dishwater blonde, so she wouldn't have to bleach.
a few foils could be done with a high–lift blonde (level 10 or
higher and 30 vol developer), and the rest of the hair could be
coloured brown. that wouldn't be so bad.
another option is just to do a row of foils down the middle of
the top of the head in both blonde and brown. if her hair is all
the same length (not layered), then this would be a very easy
process, and not at all difficult to maintain, IMO.
a word on Loving Care and the like:
from what i understand, they are semipermanent tints. i don't
use them regularly, but i have before. your semipermanent
colours will fade out, yes, but if you're using them on blonde
hair, good luck. it's likely that your daughter's light hair
will retain much of the colour and will only completely disappear
when the parts with colour are completely grown out or cut off.
what this means is: if you don't want her hair to retain any of
the colour for more than a few weeks, don't do it. if she had
dark hair, then i'd say, sure, go for it. imagine making a mark
with pencil on white paper. if you then erase the mark, you will
still faintly see where the mark was. if you mark on black paper
and then erase, it will be more difficult and perhaps impossible
to see where the mark was. this analogy should be considered
when doing anything to blonde hair.

Maybe if she got both highlights and lowlights, it would give her the
effect she wants but there would still be enough of her natural color in
there that it wouldn't look bad growing out?

Why do you call "dishwater blonde" ugly? Many women spend hundreds to
achieve that color. Guess the grass is always greener.
Here is a hint though –– Google "temporary hair color" and you will find a
ton of options, including one at the kidzworld web site that may fit the
bill.
Hope that helps.

I think the OP meant that the dyed hair could be ugly while it was growing
out. (But I think that the term "dishwater blonde" is very negative.)

My almost 14 year–old daughter has been doing her own color for the
last year or so. She started out with Natural Instincts by Clairol.
This is a temporary hair color that washes out and it's very natural
looking. I'm not sure that there are any temporary products for blonde
streaks though that look natural anyway. Good luck. I know exactly
what you're going through. Just be thankful she's not asking for
purple streaks. That's what my daughter has now:^)

Many mothers and fathers go through this with their children. My son
put Oribe's blue temporary color in his hair. It was like a pomade but
did not come out as easily as he thought it would. As a cook he wears a
semi–mohawk. The sides aren't shaved so with the parents or for his
real job interview he can, in his own words, comb it down to look like a
dork. My girls have beeen more sensible. It's ok though. Hair color is
a form of self expression and there are a lot worse things your kids can
do.

I saw this when I shopped the other day http://tinyurl.com/jzxqh and,
coincidentally, when I purchased the John Frieda Luminous Color Glaze. I
don't know very much about temporary color but this looked exactly like what
you/she are/is looking for. Launch this and it will show more detail.
HTH,
Jamie
P.S. I love L'Oreal but know nothing of hair color products – I have mine
professionally done.

Yes, this temporary hair color by L'Oreal is perfect for teenagers who
want a different look only temporarily. My daughter has used this
product also and it can be applied in streaks with a brush. By the way
I absolutely love the Luminous Color Glaze!
