Anyone heard of FLAIR? 1950s Fashion Magazine

pairofni...@gmail.com
Does anyone remember this amazing magazine? I found a few old copies in
amazing condition and am trying to sell them.

I've noted that old copies are frequently spammed by losers.

Cry me a river. I'm trying to get this book into the hands of someone
who might appreciate it. People here like fashion. It's a fashion
magazine. Chances are someone here might be interested.

<Snort!> And then these coveted magazines are used for toilet paper.

Charles, while I understand your abhorrence of spammers I cannot
refrain from saying that your comments are way out of line. Actually,
they are offensive.
With regard to "Flair," it was an extraordinarily innovative,
influential magazine that published for only two years, beginning in
1950, and covered topics ranging through literature, clothing, art,
travel, decor, theatre, humor, cultural commentary and entertainment.
There's nothing like it out there today; some of the people who wrote
for "Flair" included Tennessee Williams, Colette, Jean Cocteau, John
O'Hara, Margaret Mead and Simone de Beauvoir. Even the way it was
printed, with cut–outs and inserts, was remarkably creative. "Flair"
ceased publication in January 1951 "due to the critical foreign
situation, rising costs and the imminent shortage of quality paper."
Maybe "Visionaire" has come close in our time, but it's not nearly as
sophisticated or intelligent. I have a collection entitled "The Best
of Flair," for which I paid a pretty penny several years ago, and it is
a treasured possession.
Note to the original poster: (1) Don't be offended by one poster.
We're not all like that. (2) However, we are known for our intolerance
of people who suddenly appear here and try to sell stuff. Please
respect that about us.

Mine should have been quite inoffensive.
On the other hand, "itsjoannotjoann" may have also been correct.

The 'offensive' comment came from me and it was directed to this
low–life coming here and hoping to fleece posters out of their money.
Gotta love the spammers – NOT.

Joan, while all of us here understand spammers and nobody welcomes
them, there are ways to respond and there are ways not to respond. And
sometimes the best thing to do is ignore them. But at no time is it a
good idea to resort to toilet commentary. All that does is bring you
down to their level––or beneath it.

Where does it end or begin. Showing a group that you have something >you know
they may be interested in because it's on topic, or showing the group that
you have something to sell because they'll buy it for the same reason?
Dennis, your point is well taken and I don't think there's an easy
answer. There have been times when I visit an obvious spammer's website
because what s/he has to offer actually is of interest to me.
There *is*, however, an easy answer to the question, "Should we simply
and civilly inform spammers to cease and desist or should we attack
them with toilet comments?" I think the answer to that one is quite
clear.
P.S. Please let us know if you get those copies of "Flair" and post
about them.

Firstly, I would like to thank you for not going crazy on me for my comments
because I realize I was going a bit against the grain on this one. Sure,
spamers do often have items which are of interest to us all which is why they
target that particular group. In this case, the OP has an abundance of items
and yes, it was strictly using the group as an advertising forum. No
argument there at all.

Agreed again and I'll keep it in mind for the future. These two magazines
did seem to be in great condition and are obviously very rare. Something I
would have liked to own, or at least take a closer look at. You're correct
though, and I believe it's called feeding the ...
P.S. Please let us know if you get those copies of "Flair" and post

Too late. I was asleep at the wheel and missed the boat. Maybe someone else
in here picked them up and can fill us in?

Nobody asked but here's my two cents on this one. I realize that these
magazines are probably worth buying (in fact, I'll likely bid on them) just
because of their historical significance. But the OP does have an awfully
lot of things out there to sell so this isn't one of those, 'Well, I found
these precious items and best tell those who really would be happy to have
them' type things. It's just a marketing ploy by someone who's selling on
eBay and discovered that usenet is a *free* advertising board. Of course
it's not, thus the frustration from some and valid frustration.

Tough call to make if it's spamming or not yet in this case, if the seller
only had those two items then it wouldn't be as suspicious to me. But I'll
still make a bid to see if I get them :–)

Original poster here.
First of all, I honestly didn't know that usenet wasn't a place for
this and to a newbie, it seemed on–topic, especially since I –––was––
looking for more info on this title in addition to promoting the fact
that I was selling them.
Second, I was not 'trying to fleece someone out of their money.' That's
just out of line. I have some great magazines, and again, I just want
the posters here to see if they want them. I have a couple more up for
sale now and will have another one up next week. I won't post the link
here, suffice to say that if you are interested in these items, they
are available.
Third, you guys don't own the usenet nor can you regulate its content.
There will always be new people coming in who don't know the rules and
you don't do anything to make them feel welcome. If you want to just
keep talking about the same topic with the same people, fine, but you
might want to consider how new people are treated here.
Lastly, thank you to the people who took the time to talk about Flair
and give me some info. Just think how positive this thread could have
been had you jerkoffs just ignored what you perceived to be spam and
instead welcomed me with a discussion of this influential magazine. The
forum would have been better, the topic would have been worth reading
and contributing to and none of your panties would have been in a
twist. But emboldened by the anonymous nature of the forum and lacking
any real manners, some babies ruined it all. Well done, guys. You
should be very proud of the forum you're trying so fruitlessly to
protect.

Then why even mention you were selling them if your primary aim was to
find out more about them? You could have posted the same message,
minus the SPAMMING, and you would have been fine.

Oh, but we do own alt.fashion. We can see to it that you lose your
eBay account and your ISP. Wouldyou like that?
As for your not feeling welcome: my heart bleeds for you. Truly it
does. Because you walked in here, after you were already asked once
the week before not to SPAM us, and SPAMMED us again.
As for others not feeling welcome, in the last year there have been a
lot of new screennames added to alt.fashion. Clearly these folks felt
quite welcome here. I wonder what the difference was between their
individual experiences and your experience. Hmmm. What could it be?
Could it be that they didn't come here solely to SPAM us?

I don't know how we'll survive without you, and I am sure that your
post will inspire only the deepest soul–searching in each and every one
of us.
Now run along. And take your SPAM with you.
pairofni...@gmail.com
Again everyone: I got here through Google groups. I'm a newbie at the
rules and didn't know. This continual talk of spam is just unwarranted.
It was a mistake already! If I wanted to spam you I'd keep posting
links or post all kinds of links, but once I found out that wasn't
kosher, I stopped. Geez!
I would like to know more about this magazine, and not just because I
have sold my only copies... but they were in such good shape that I
really didnt' want to open them and read them. Did Capote ever write
for them? I did see a Dali painting on the inside cover of one. Anyone
else know about these?
"EMiriamD" <emiri...@gmail.com>

Please understand that alt.fashion is continually bombarded by all
kinds of people trying to sell all kinds of things, most of which are
of little or no interest to most people here, i.e. how to get rich or
where to buy yet more homemade beaded necklaces. We become annoyed and
sometimes we overreact, which is what happened in your case.
Second, I was not 'trying to fleece someone out of their money.' That's

We encourage anyone to hang out here, read our posts and get the sense
of who we are and what we talk about, and then add a link to their sig
line if they want to let us know they have something to
sell/promote/auction off. You'll be more than welcome to try that
tack, if you're so inclined. And as for the "fleece people out of
their money" remark, well, that was uncalled for, as you said. Totally
out of bounds.
Third, you guys don't own the usenet nor can you regulate its content.

Apologies. As I said in my original response to you, please don't
think that everyone here is unwelcoming. However, we do tend to react
negatively to people who pop up out of the blue, so to speak, simply to
let us know they have something to sell. That kind of defines
spamming, n'est–ce pas?

Well, now, it's not exactly that straightforward. You didn't arrive
here innocently asking for a discussion about "Flair." You arrived
here to tell us you had copies up for auction and included the link.
Only secondarily did you ask if anyone knew about "Flair." (And I
responded.) But your overall point is well taken, if only to remind us
that sometimes some of us are a little too eager to pounce on newcomers
who we perceive to be spammers. For some here it's become a blood
sport that's gotten way out of control.
Finally, let me say that I would welcome a discussion about "Flair," or
any other fashion publications. And if you'd care to join us, that
would be lovely.
"EMiriamD" <emiri...@gmail.com>
I mistakenly said "Flair" had published for two years. It began in
February 1950 and ceased publication in January 1951, producing only
twelve issues. I don't see that Capote wrote for them but there are at
least two contributions by Dali.
I'd suggest that you take a look at the description of "The Best of
Flair" on the amazon.com website, which gives a little summary about
this extraordinary magazine. Also, copies of "The Best of Flair" are
now available for as little as $92, which is a lot less than I paid for
mine.
