POLL: what size are you?

"justme" <avong...@verizon.net>
They say that the average pant size of women is a 16 in the US...just
curious as to what the average here is...(how nosey is that!)
I have good days where I'm a 6 and bad days where an 8 just isn't real
baggy!
rivergirl...@hotmail.com
18–20. I can lose or gain 10 to 20 pounds, and I am still an 18–20.
"morning_path" <morning_p...@yahoo.com>
Pants: 8–10 L. My waist is small, but my hips are wider than normal,
and my leg length is longer than normal.
Shirts: M. Except that my arms are longer than normal, so for
long–sleeved shirts I buy L or XL just for the extra arm fabric.
Mass–produced clothes are just an approximation; it's difficult to
actually "fit" correctly in these clothes.

Gotta love it, and length is petite to regular, depending.

"My waist is small, but my hips are wider than normal"
That's me, except it's more of my thighs– if I can get it past them I
can get anything around my tummy so it makes pants just not fit right.
I'm also an inbetween height, too tall for petite but too short for
"regular"
That's why when I find something that is close to "right" I buy more
than 1!

This is the type of question where those uncomfortable with their weight
probably will say it's no one's business.

Pants: the smallest i can fit into is a 3/4, the biggest is an 8. depends
on who's making the pants.
Shirts: a nice button down... size 8. junior's fitted t's.... a medium.

Morning_path, you must be my twin, lol.
As far as pants/skirts go, my biggest fitting problems are my prominent
butt, large thighs and broad shoulders. Regardless of my weight, these
areas remain proportionately large.
Pants waistbands often dip down in the back because there isn't enough
booty space so I fight plumber's butt even in mid rise pants.
When it comes to tops, I'm always on the lookout for fitted tops in
longer lengths and tall sizes. I especially like stretch fabrics as
they accomodate my broad shoulders without requiring a too roomy
overall fit. I'm unwilling to buy oversized tops to get the extra
length and shoulder width as baggy clothes are extremely unflattering
on me. I really need garments that are fitted in the waist/midriff area
but not too tight or short. In the wrong styles I look
dumpy/matronly/overweight.

Well, I've pretty much given up on looking good in long–sleeve things;
I buy baggy and I also buy from Marshall Field's, where the things they
make are sometimes longer in the arms.
I'm alright in the summer; I'm so glad the 3/4 sleeve is/was in fashion
because you can't tell as much how long my arms are!
As for pants, I find that if I get jeans that fit my hips, they leave
4–5 inches extra in the waist, so I'm swimming at the top and tight on
the bottom. lol. ;–) I have found that for $80 I can fit perfectly into
Lucky jeans, but that's a ton of $ for just some jeans. sheesh.

Honestly, it can depend on who made the clothes, or the store where I
bought them.
I have dresses in my closet that are size 10. I have pants that are
size 16. I have blouses that are both M and XL. Skirts that are 12.
All of these clothes are in my active rotation.
It's maddening. One thing that I have done lately is realize that
"size" is only a number and it is between Me and My Maker! I buy
clothes that I like, fit well, and are affordable. Screw some
arbitrary number that has no uniformity anyway.
I had some surgery last week, and consequently I have lost some weight
in the process of being laid up, eating only soft foods and liquids,
and feeling sick. The upside? One of my favorite pairs of pants fit
better than ever! :–)
Who cares about size? Focus on feeling good, looking good, and being
healthy. Anyone who worries about YOUR size needs to find some worries
of their own.

Of course you weren't being "nosy." It's an interesting question and a
problem that we all face when buying clothes.
It's a good topic...thank you for starting it.

Pants vary by manufacturer.
I currently have a pair of Levi's lowrise flare size 11L (junior) that fits
perfectly.
I have another brand in 8L that fits, although a little too snug in the hips
for my "older woman" preference. 10 is usually ok.
Dresses, about an 8 although some can go larger/smaller depending on the cut..
Tops vary, from junior L to misses S.
I'm about 5'9" slender but "pear–shaped".
"justme" <avong...@verizon.net>
ok– just to clear things up so noone things I was really being nosey, I
just wondered because when I go shopping, although I'm a 6–8 all I seem
to find are smaller than me sizes or shirts that are 2–3 X...I just
wondered if the "average" they said was close to right as there doesn't
seem to be an abunace of clothes for sizes higher than a 5.

You must be looking in the wrong places or shopping at the wrong time.
If you shop now as I did yesterday, you would find collections in every
size. In two months people will have bought some of them so every size
won't be available.

I have the opposite problem. If the pants fit in the waist, the crotch
is below my knees. I have NO butt or thighs. I am extremely
short–waisted with a tummy problem. I have to say that it seems to me
that most ladies' pants are made to fit ample derrieres and thighs, but
no one makes anything for a figure like mine. I am over 40, and the
only thing w/in the past 25 years that has flattered me are hip–hugger
jeans, because they actually rise only to my natural waist. Regular
pants come up to under my bust! Like a nerd!

size.. 2. maybe a 1 .. sometimes a 6 in a jacket (not the pants though)
those who haven't seen me in a while have commented how thin but
muscular too.. (working out. pilates rocks)
short legs. everything goes up except those in petites or short
lengths.
I wear mostly pants and most shirts don't fit right.

14–16 in pants, like has been stated above, depends on who makes them.
Large–XL in tops, once again, it depends on the style and who makes
them. Broad shoulders and busty but absolutely no butt; from my neck
to my heels is a straight line :–( . I think I have two tops that
are long sleeve and everything else is short sleeve. It's that time of
life when I swelter in 20 degree weather. <shrug>

1 or 2? What would that be in Australian sizes? We basically start at a
6 (which is ultra tiny)

Eddie Bauer makes pants of varying waist heights. They also make them
with varying hip to waist ratios in the various waist heights. So you
want get low–waisted, hips similar to waist in size or low–waisted,
wider at the hips than waist. (This isn't their phrasing. But it's
similar to that.) There are six variations.

Sizes are meaningless – I can grab an 6 or 8 from a rack and swim in
it, a 10 and it's impossible to sit down.
My big beef is with length – what height do manufacturers cut for?
I've had to rehem just about ev. pr. I've bought in the past 15 years.

At least you can hem them––making them longer is impossible. I'm
5'11" and need a longer inseam, but manufacturers who make them longer
usually make them "tall", which means longer in the rise. So now
they're long enough but the waist of the pants is way up past my belly
button or results in gobs of extra fabric in the crotch area.
Thankfully, I'm seeing more and more jeans in short, average, and long
inseams instead of the dreaded "tall".

I broke down and bought a pair of supposedly size 2 Petite jeans a couple
weeks ago and I swear that about 5" had to be cut off when they were hemmed.
You'd think they wouldn't want to waste fabric like that. Average height
people aren't likely to look for pants in the petites section––though
perhaps they should.

Apparently they cut them for about 5'7" as virtually all pants are the
perfect length for me. A few years ago when I had a very hard time
finding anything long enough. I've also noticed the shoulder widths are
getting wider as I'm finally able to find some jackets that fit
properly.
