Should men have more fashion freedom?

dd...@bellsouth.net
I've got an essay up at my new blog http://mensnewsdaily.com/blog/dnoe
about a teen boy who wants to be able to wear a kilt to a school
function. Should these be allowed? Girls and women routinely wear
pants. Why can't boys and men wear something other than pants?
Thanks to anyone who discusses this.

Most definately!! The key to me is the boy was wearing a kilt, a
men's clothing item, and was not trying to wear the school's girls
skirt to the school event. Especially in the hotter weather, the
uneven dress code can be a real problem if the school bans shorts but
does not require pants for all students, letting the girls wear much
cooler skirts. I am all for dress codes that apply to "all students",
not "boys" or "girls" only. I assume here the kilt was appropriately
long enough as to not cause a problem (similar to a girl's skirt not
being too short).
There are a lot of companies now making everyday non–Scottish kilts,
like Utilikilts. I hope these items come into more common usage, they
are definately more comfortable to wear in the summer.

I think they absolutely should be allowed, provided they're an
appropriate length (the length thing I also think should be applied to
ladies' skirts at school functions too, fwiw).
My DH wears his Utilikilts proudly, all year 'round. :)
