Help, I have moths!!

ami kio <...@cant–take–anymore–spam.com>
Short story:
How do I get rid of moths in my home??
Long story:
I was wearing one of my fav black 2–ply cashmere sweaters when I realized
that I had a hole in the middle of the shoulder. Now, I've had a number of
sweaters develop holes at the seams and a couple in random places, but I
always assumed that my new washing machine was agitating the clothes harder
than my old one, and thus tearing sweaters that I should be hand washing.
My coworker casually mentioned that it's probably a moth. Horrified, I
returned home to check a sweater that I threw in the mending pile, and there
was a small pile dust on the skirt underneath the sweater (i.e. Sign of moth
munching). So I definitely have moths!
A friend mentioned that moths can't take extreme temps, so a week in the
freezer (time length from a webpg) should kill all eggs & larvae. I've
already stuffed as many sweaters as I could in the freezer. In the
meantime, I have 3 XXXL Ziplock big bags of woolens waiting for their turn
in the freezer. I threw cedar blocks in each bag to hopefully prevent
further moth damage. I also put a cedar block in/on all my sweater
drawers/shelves, but I have so many other clothes! How do I protect all my
silks et al? Do I have to literally wash every single thing that I own &
wipe down all my closets/drawers/shelves??
Slightly panicking,
ami

http://tinyurl.com/e4ndy This site has a lot of useful information.
Ami they won't necessarily get into all of your other clothes. I had
moth holes in one cashmere sweater this year but that was it. It was one
I had not cleaned at the end of the season the previous year and I do
believe that cleaning before storing is extremely important. None of my
other sweaters in the same area were damaged. I try to keep my wool
sweaters in drawers with cedar blocks and balls or in closed containers.
My skirts however do not have the same protection. My husband has each
of his wool suits in an individual garment bag. None have ever had moth
holes. I don't think the holes in seams were caused by moths but
perhaps I am wrong.

Audrey,
I haven't looked at the link but do cedar blocks discourage moths? I didn't
think they were effective for that. I thought they were only used to
freshen clothes that were stored. Learn something new every day!
It would be a fantastical improvement over mothballs. During my last
pregnancy I opened 6 boxes of clothes that were loaned to me and was
seriously sickened (for a few days) by unpacking and handling them since
they were saturated with that stuff.
BTW, taking no chances, I did pack my maternity clothes in mothball packets
that are offered now in lavender scent. A little improvement but not much.
Going to look at the link.

O.K. Lavender, mint, and cedar! Who knew?! When I used cedar blocks, I really
didn't have much faith in their efficiency. I feel better now, thanks!

Remember to shave them as needed to refresh the scent. That is where I don't follow
through but should. I think I'll ask the son to do that. He does a great job
sharpening my knives. I know, your children are too young but wait.
Audrey,
Can you just sand it down to renew the scent?

Yes but who here sands their cedar blocks? I just redid a drawer that
had 8 sweaters, and 6 blocks that had no scent. I am a bad housekeeper.

I knew about the cedar block keeping the moths away but I never heard about
shaving them to refresh and sharpen the knives at the same time.
Something I'll have to try and thanks for the tip.
Oh wait, you're son sharpens the knives and then you shave the blocks, or
something like that ;–)

Read again. I said I think I'll ask him to do the cedar blocks because
he does a great job sharpening my knives. Neither task is related other
than being tasks I never do myself.

I dunno Audrey, but in MY case sandpaper is far less perilous to
my person than anything sharp.

Yeah, I had that figured out but at first it sounded too good to be true
(which of course it was and is always the case when you hear something to
that level).
