OT: The Low Fat Article

So, I suppose everyone has heard about the study announced today showing
that eating low fat has no effect on risk of heart disease or cancer or
various other diseases. I read several responses to the news, but this one
really stood out:
"This confirms what I've been saying for years – fat is good for
you," said Lena Lumford, a chef in Reading, Pa. "I weigh 422 pounds,"
said Lumford, 37, "and I never believed all that baloney. Now I'm
getting reacquainted with my comfort foods."

I cut it out for my student who needs current events for sociology.
While it doesn't lower the risk of heart disease or cancer, it certainly
doesn't harm anyone. At 422 pounds I cannot believe that Lena left those
comfort foods far behind. My question , is she able to get up out of a
chair, how far can she walk without pain, can she climb a hill...
Unfortunately heredity and our environment have such a huge effect on
our health. Sometimes I think it's just the luck of the draw. My
husband's first secretary died two weeks ago of breast cancer. She
wasn't even fifty years old. She leaves a husband and a twenty–one year
old daughter. We all know of such situations.

The reporting of that study was *VERY* misleading! The study absolutely
did NOT show that following a low fat diet had no effect on disease!
If you read the study summary, it says that the test group were only
advised to follow a low fat diet and lose weight if needed. Most of
them didn't follow the instructions, remained overweight and continued
to eat a high fat junk food diet.
A more accurate conclusion would be that *telling* people they should
eat better doesn't prevent disease!

IIRC, the study followed the participants for eight years. That doesn't
seem very long when we're talking about a lifetime of dietary and exercise
habits.
I shudder to think how many women will use the headline as justification for
an utter porkfest. Oh, well, I guess that clothing manufacturers can just
adjust the tagged sizes on clothes again.

p.s. I wonder how much weight Lena is going to put on now that she is
getting "reacquainted" with her comfort foods! (Good one, Audrey!)
