Men's Earrings

"Brandon" <BrandonSFos...@gmail.com>
Hi! I'm new to this group and I recently decided to take the plunge (I
worry about little things like this) and get my left ear pierced. I
was just wondering what everyone thought about men (in their 20's) with
earrings.

why's it so important for us to know that you got your LEFT ear
pierced?
if you're going to get one pierced, be a man and get BOTH of them
pierced. personally, i think it looks silly when a man only has
one ear pierced. like Harrison Ford – stupid look for him. IMO,
of course.
i had both of my ears dermal punched in November 2004 at 6 gauge
and stretched immediately to 4 gauge. now i'm at 00 gauge.

Get both done, no reason not to, I know lots of the manly kind of hetero men
that wear two earrings. I am not out at work myself yet(TS) and no one says
anything about me wearing a gold heart in each ear and this is at the port and
on ships.

I think the one earring thing looks a little dated. Having both ears
pierced looks a lot better, in my book. That said, earrings are like hats.
Not everyone can wear them without looking like they're wearing a costume
or trying too hard. Even on men who look good in earrings, I think subtlety
works best. Small gold hoops or small, simple studs can look pretty manly,
but anything flashy starts to look like you want to join a rap crew.

Yeah, one earring feels very '80s to me... or very South Jersey/gold
neck chain with sports jersey (sorry). Both ears is less dated, I
guess, but I'm not generally a big fan of earrings on men. They're
"ok" on the relatively few men who can carry it off.
But hey, it won't hurt (much) to experiment.. Unlike tattoos, earrings
are something you can easily change your mind about later.

As a woman, I think earrings on a man are a turn–off, especially in both
ears. It seems a little too prissy for a man to care about something so
insignificant and well, girlie. Plus, it is definitely NOT perceived as
professional. Most of the upper class places I've worked for did not
allow men to wear earrings. The men who do have earrings sometimes try
to hide them at work under a little Band–Aid, and that looks really
ridiculous.
Rock stars can look "cool" with flash, but regular men just look
unprofessional and faddish.

They may be afraid that the holes will close if their ears are recently
pierced.
I'm too old fashioned to be joyed about men with earrings. It's ok but
not my preference. Also I envy those athletes and musicians whose
diamond studs are way bigger than mine. Yes, I have issues.

I used to wear the ones that were an open circle that you'd push together ––
no piercing required. That way, when the trend died, the ears were intact.
Your mileage may vary.

Both! Get both ears pierced. Just one ear (left/straight; right/gay) was an
80s thing. Go for both. I am a 45–year–old straight male and have both lobes
triple–pierced.

I'm pretty conservative, but I must not know much about fashion/trends....I
think one ear (left) looks nice and classy with a single diamond (or
realistic looking CZ) coz that is what my Dad has and he is 66 years old. I
think that both ears pierced is really quite a bit too much! I know that
guys in their 20's can get away with is but what I find attractive is a
single piercing in the left ear with a diamond stud, as far as piercings go.
And I am not a big fan of any other piercings at all! I also really think
that that "gauging" thing where guys make these huge holes in their ears are
really nasty and unattractive!! And my mom who is a DR told that that skin
will never grow back. Ewww. I would just take the single earring out for
work if that is what your job dictates but I think one earrings on the left
is very cool. Can't go wrong with that, unless you are possibly homosexual?
I'm not going there with the homosexuality thing at all. I guess I'm just
biased coz that's how my Daddy wears his...a diamond stud in the left ear.
Simple and elegant.

Kristin,
You are out of line here. Time for a break, girlfriend. Chill, as the
younger set says. Perhaps the vitriol you posted above is a side–effect
of your pain level and the drugs you are using to treat it due to your

David is a contributing member here at alt.fashion and has been for many
years. It is time now for you to back off and take your prejudice and
your name–calling elsewhere.
So he doesn't care for Pantene or Aussie products? He and I were quite
able to have a very reasonable discussion of them. I like some of them,
he doesn't. He suggested other products, I didn't care for them, we
agree to disagree, and other af'er (hopefully) got something out of the
discussion.
Does he (he has linked to pics of himself) meet my personal 'dress
code'? No, not really, as I personally do not find most body mods
attractive – but I completely understand and respect his choices for his
own body.
His movie reviews are spot–on. I've more than once chosen or not–chosen

Okay, for everyone here...I didn't do anything wrong and David didn't do
anything wrong, so can we all be adults here and just agree to disagree?? As
for The CAT I am also a contributing member to AF and have been for awhile
too. I am sorry for any harm I have caused by just having a simple
"opinion". I will take this to email with anyone who wants a more
"personalized apology" and such. And I have something I am going through
that I cannot and will not talk about in my life that I will have to take to
the grave with me, so it may look as if I am spouting off for "no good
reason" but I'm sorry, if any of you were going through what I have to deal
with, you might act messed up as well. But I cannot get into that, it's
very, very personal stuff. But, please can we all just get along? Can we
agree to disagree? Will everyone either just drop the subject or else block
me? Thank you very much for your cooperation in this matter.

Actually, by adding this addendum, you are doing exactly that.
But my opinions are not

I'm no particular fan of David's. But you did write some things which
could very easily be construed as offensive. And if there was a point
where this slipped into personal attack mode, the posts which started
it clearly bore your screen name.

It has nothing to do with being politically correct. But it has
everything to do with having respect for other people. Having a firmly
held religious belief doesn't exempt you from the duty to show respect
to other people.
And I am so sorry that you are dealing with yet more personal problems.
But that doesn't mean you still don't need to take responsibility for
every thing you say on this group. Having personal problems doesn't
give you free rein to say whatever you want and using your
problems/illness as an excuse to insult and offend others. If you
can't participate here in a manner where you have control over what you
say, if you can't figure out how to participate without insulting other
people, and if you aren't able to get by without using all sorts of
excuses for bad behavior, it is very possible that a large, volatile
space, such as a USENET group is not the best place for your
participation in your current state of mind.
Good luck with all of your problems.

Basic misunderstanding on your part David. She said the *look* of that
type piercing is nasty and unattractive to her, not the guys who have
it. Taking it to your AOL example in the same vein that Valmont did,
you would say that you think using AOL is nasty and unattractive, not
that the people who use AOL are nasty and unattractive. Big
difference.
what i find ultimately nasty and unattractive are people who
stereotype and lump everyone into one big group and then call
them nasty and unattractive.
Now in this case you have lumped a group of people together calling
them 'nasty and unattractive' based on a single attribute, precisely
what you are trying to chastise Valmont for doing (which she didn't).
To practice what you preach, you should have said "I find it nasty and
unattractive when people stereotype and lump everyone in to one group
and then call them nasty and unattractive."
And for what it's worth, I also find the gauged holes in ears
unattractive. And I don't care what it's called, it's still
unattractive to me.
This forum is for discussing opinions, and over time most everyone here
will have something they have or do criticized by someone. That's what
makes the group interesting, the differing tastes and opinions. If
everyone here lashes out at those with differing opinions, it will just
become a 'verbal' war zone.
Linda
