Bare Escentuals questions

"mspina" <sp...@alum.mit.edu>
Hi all,
I'm a long–time lurker – love this group. I'm looking for help with the
Bare Escentuals line – it's got me interested. Currently, I use a
combination of L'Oreal Tru–Match (C3) liquid foundation, and MAC Studio
Fix (NW20) – I mix the Tru–Match with a little Olay Regenerist to thin
it out a bit, blend it in, then use Studio Fix where I want more
coverage (under eyes, around nose, any other areas that need a bit
more, etc.). I then use Tru Match pressed powder for touch ups
throughout the day (creamy natural – C3). This actually works well for
me in terms of coverage and color match (I've had a number of people
ask me what I use on my skin because it looks so nice), but I find that
by mid–day the foundation has crept into the very few lines that I have
– one crease between my brows, and the lines formed by my cheeks (line
from nose to sides of mouth – I have full cheeks). This drives me
*nuts*. I also feel like I can look a bit too made–up at times – toning
this routine down doesn't give me the look I want, but doing my usual
routine can tend to feel a bit heavy – the liquid foundation can just
feel heavy. Also, I've got combination/oily skin, so can be prone to
shine.
So, the mineral foundation seems interesting to me. My question is how
to best go about trying it out? I'm somewhat intrigued by either the
QVC or Sephora kits, but I don't know which color kit to purchase – it
seems silly to buy 2 differnet foundation colors when you probably only
use one of them. I quickly checked out the medium shades at Sephora,
but didn't have time to look to closely – and I was somewhat confused
as to what was actually in the kit... But one of them seemed REALLY
pink – definitely wouldn't work for me. I tend to use lighter
foundation, so I think I'm leaning toward the light kit, but I
certainly wouldn't call myself porcelain. Looking at the foundation
color descriptions, I'd say that I was either a 2 or a 2.3. What to do?
Also, is the kit useful? Do you really use all of the stuff? Or would I
be better off just getting the one foundation that I match, plus
Mineral Veil (that seems like a universal "must have"), and the
brushes?
Any help with color selection (I should probably just go to Sephora and
get help, right?), and how to purchase (kit or no kit), or, just
general comments on the line – given the description of my usual
routine, and my issues with it, do you think this will work well for
me?
Thanks!

I've been a long–time BE user for years. I still use a a light
foundation (Revlon's Age Defying light make–up), but for cheek and eye
color, BE cannot be beat. Also the mineral veil is amazing for
providing a flawless, finished look. If you do decide to purchase the
foundation, then practice using it. The trick is to tap the brush to
remove all the excess mineral powder from the brush. The lighter the
touch the better. I purchase my BE products from QVC. I know that if
I don't like it, I can return it within 30 days for any reason. I
would try one piece first. Either the foundation w/brush or the
mineral veil w/brush. The brush is essential and theirs is the only
one that works well with the products. If you like it and you're
hooked, then go for one of the kits. As I said, the colors, when
applied properly, are very natural and sheer. I love them! Good luck!

Most people "start" with BE and by that I mean that there's a WHOLE
group at the Delphi Forums (actually SEVERAL groups) dedicated to
mineral makeup. Trust me, it's an addiction.
That said, I'd say go to your local Sephora or Ulta and look at the
samples there. BE is more "forgiving" when it comes to matching than
other foundations but you don't want to have the wrong color either. If
you are lucky enough to have a BE Boutique near you (check out
www.barescentuals.com), have a "makeunder" done. I do recommend that you
also get a "starter kit" with a CD so that you can see the whole
process.
I love mineral makeups but don't use BE as my foundation because I find
it too shiny. I do love their eye shadows, liners, and blushes. With
mineral makeup, the beauty of it is that it's so versatile that you can
wear your eye shadow as blush and vice versa. Some people also make
their own lipsticks using mineral makeup.
Good luck and have fun!

I bought my first BE at QVC. Figured I couldn't go wrong since there is a
30 day money back guarantee if you don't like it. Or you can exchange it
for a different color if the color you pick is not right.
Then when I decided I liked it, I now try to find it cheaper elsewhere.
Like on Ebay and such.

I can't comment on the other mineral makeups, but I'm a user of
Youngblood and really like it. Not shiny nor irritating to the skin.

I bought the entire kit at Sephora. I use all of the items except for the
slightly darker foundation. I got color matched at Sephora and found it
really useful as I would have gone too light and looked pasty. It sounds as
if we have similar skin tones...I'm a NC20 in MAC. I think I purchased the
fairly light kit. It is a really good deal.

BE has really tighted down on online sales...but a few places will
discount it with just a phone call. One that comes to mind is
Medi–Spa...call them directly at 1–866–221–3376. Their shipping and c/s
is very good.

I have the try me kit from qvc. Shade 2.3 is best for me. I didn't
care for the mineral veil on its own, tho, so I mixed in a bit of the
Warmth blush stuff and now have something usable. I also used some
Aubrey Organics blush minerals with the Veil for a very muted rose
blush.
I also have to give five stars to Jane Iredale – Warm Silk is the best
shade for me and a local vendor (hair salon) gave me a free sample
which lasted for many applications. I prefer the pressed version to
the loose.
The stuff lasts forever and I can't imagine anyone using up a BE eye
product in one lifetime.
wac...@AOL.com
BE did come out with a tinted mineral veil this summer which is
awesome. Gives the skin a nice healthy look, without it being too
bronzy or fake looking in any way. I still use it, even in the winter.
Just a little right under my blush.

one that works well with the products.
Not true. I use Origins big powder brush with BE and it works
perfectly, probably because it's synthetic and therefore the bristles
are a little stiff; I think this helps with application.
As for shine problem, I've found that the following trick helps
enormously: before applying the mineral foundation, take an el cheapo
wedge makeup sponge and apply a layer of loose powder all over your
face (plain loose powder, not mineral––any kind will probably do but I
use LeClerc Banane because it cuts down on ruddiness). Apply the
powder as if you were applying foundation. This thin layer of plain
loose face powder cuts the shininess and makes the foundation look even
better.
HTH and good luck!

Zinc oxide will certainly help hyperpigmentation from getting darker
by protecting the skin from further sun exposure, but I haven't heard
about studies showing that it reduces hyperpigmentation.
Can you provide some links or references about this?

Make sure to get the semi–matte one. From their website:
"The difference between the "original glo" and semi–matte is that the
original glo's finish is very comparable to the leading brand. The
semi–matte offers less of a glow or dewey appearance. "

I agree about using the powder although some people use Mineral Veil as
their base, sort of a Mineral Veil sandwich, and it works fine.
Regarding the issue about the brush, yes, I agree also. I use
Prescriptives brush and really like it. The trick with using ANY brush
with ANY mineral makeup is to make sure to really work the powder into
the brush and tap off excess. It's easy to layer but can be nasty to
take off.
Regarding other mineral makeups, I belong to the Mineral Makeup Mania
newsgroup on Delphi (http://forums.delphiforums.com/mineralmania/start
free but requires registration) and boy can you get great information
about mineral makeup on these boards. There are also boards for BE and
other makeup lines. The list of other mineral makeup (or MMU for short)
is on the start page of the Mineral Makeup Mania board. One word of
warning: these posters really know their stuff and are more than willing
to welcome people into their world, which is quite addictive. Keep your
credit card far far away if you are easily tempted!
Most important, have fun with MMU. After all, it's only makeup.

much more matte, and seems to have more pigment in it. I find that I use

I'm liking the Ecco Bella Flower Color Foundation a lot lately, but it's
pretty expensive. I like my Bare Escentuals, but depending on the brush, I
sometimes am finding it too shiny. I wish I could find the Ecco Bella
(liquid formula, but it has some clay in it, so it's an interesting formula
that's very matte.) somewhere for a little cheaper. It's about $20 per ounce
and I wear it at least five days a week with the Chanel Foundation Brush. I
like that it's not shiny in the least, though, and doesn't look "orangey" or
"yellowish" on me at all, thankfully.
