OT: What movies have you seen recently?

"ahmward" <nospam.ahmw...@yahoo.com>
This week I saw The Family Stone and Rumor Has It. Our matinees are $6.
Both are filled with stereotypes but The Family Stone was a bit too
much. I really disliked Diane Keaton's role and found it extremely
unbelievable. It was pleasant entertainment but I liked Rumor Has It a
lot more. I think Shirley MacLaine should be an Oscar nominee for best
supporting actress in Rumor Has It. Kathy Bates plays a tiny cameo
role, but she is excellent too. Jennifer Anniston seems to play herself
in most movies or what is the neurotic female who is totally unsure of
herself. She does it well.

mr and mrs smith.. less stellar the second time but worth making a bowl
of popcorn for.. I just don't think Brad is cute..
Lord of the Rings return of the king extended edition.. well worth the
watch for lots of extra footage!
War of the Worlds.. what a terrible waste of time!!
Stevie
"EMiriamD" <emiri...@gmail.com>
"Brokeback Mountain." Amazing, amazing, amazing. Heath Ledger is
beyond wonderful and so is Michelle Williams (they give the best
performances, IMHO). I have a substantial quarrel with the story
line––but won't state it here for fear of generating a spoiler––but the
film is otherwise extraordinary in so many, many ways. A very
important film

We rarely go see movies at the theater, but we rent a DVD nearly every
weekend. Last weekend's pick was The 40–Year Old Virgin. It was
great! Really funny, I'd even see it again. I'm not usually a big
comedy fan.
Stevie: I don't think Brad is cute, either; I just don't see what is
supposed to be so hot about him. Although I would like to see that
movie. And I thought War of the Worlds was a waste of time, as well!
I wish I'd never given in to it (and given Tom Crazy any of my money).

I watched War of the Worlds this weekend as well. I found it to be
horribly violent and graphic. I was really suprised that it was rated
PG13––seems like it should have been R for the violence. My kids
would have both been disturbed by that, had they seen it at age 13.

Dreary dreary day here so I stayed in and watched movies all day!
(1) DVD of 1st season of Curb Your Enthusiasm (I just LOVE this series
and had missed
the 1st season
(2) Danny Deckchair – very nice Australian comedy a friend recommended
(3) Dear Frankie – keep your tissues handy and you'll need to
concentrate as there are very
thick Scottish accents at times. By the end of the movie I had it
down pat and enjoyed
the story and the scenery. Filmed in the Glasgow area.

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory –– I'm not a Tim Burton fan at all so I
expected it to suck, but it wasn't bad. The ending was kind of "eh" though.
Johnny Depp was a good Willie Wonka. I love his quirky humor. I heard his
character was compared to Michael Jackson, but he looked more like Jack
White of The White Stripes to me.
Sex Pistols: The Filth & The Fury –– Not the best documentary, but still
worth watching is you're a punk/sex pistols fan. The one thing that was
really weird is that whenever they interviewed a band member or someone
associated with the band, that person was sitting in a dark shadow so you
couldn't even see his face (like you often see in documentaries when someone
is trying to conceal his identity). That didn't make much sense.
Especially when they put the person's name on the screen so you knew who it
was...but just couldn't see him.

The Hollywood Mythspiracy
by Matt Stoller
This is a guest–post. One of our underused media assets is Hollywood.
I asked my brother Nick, who co–wrote 'Fun with Dick and Jane', to
chime in. I just saw it, and it's a very good smart film with a
strongly liberal narrative.
<snip>
In the end, there is no intersection between Hollywood and the
Democratic Party (or none that I have noticed besides that of
fundraising). This is a missed opportunity of gargantuan proportions.
There are hundreds of writers and actors and directors who are angry
and who want to do something besides give money. We are expert message
machines offering our (generally overpriced) services for free and the
Democratic Party does not use us. We create villains and good guys, we
write America's jokes, we create the narrative of America, the lines
that are repeated by boys and girls, men and women, over lunch and the
water cooler and we have been left completely un–consulted.
typical. if the dem party hasn't taken full advantage of hollywood's
talents by now, it never will. shocking, really.
maybe nick should get permanent space on mydd or kos or moveon or
huffpost or anyplace where hollywood types can comfortably congregate
on any subject they care for. let them run it anyway they want. let
them build a hollywood political community that can rattle washington
with the click of a mouse.
don't just talk about it, do it, and do it now. worry about the
details later.

For me, it verges upon being family history.
My first cousin three times removed was one of Harry Truman's uncles

Have not seen the movie yet, but it's on my Netflix Queue coming up quite
soon. The movies I saw this weekend were Croupier (it was pretty good) with
Alex Kingston (formerly of ER) and Clive Owen and The Island, which I
borrowed from a friend who loved it and I thought it was the worst film I've
seen in probably the past seven years. It stars Scarlett Johansson and Ewan
MacGregor, both of whom I generally love. However, this movie just stunk.
Rented In Cold Blood since I enjoyed Philip Seymour Hoffman and Katherine
Keener so much in Capote recently and had never seen the 60's film release
that it is all based on. It moves waaaaaaaay too slow, but the musical score
(Quincy Jones) and John Forsythe's performance are great. There's also a
scene in it that for irony's sake really cracked me up, regarding Robert
Blake (years prior to appearing in Baretta) discussing a yellow parrot. I'm
only half way through the film (it's over two hours long) but so far I'm
liking Capote's novel better.

huge puffy fingered giant ugly thing) and Julian McMahon are both
absoulutely hunky and gorgeous...mmmm....

Quite possibly one of the worst movies ever seen. If I could watch it free

I saw Syriana the other night. I had such high hopes for this movie. It was
well acted with a great story, but it was boring. Pivotal scenes were
predictable and they spent too much time focusing on mundane details. I
assume George Clooney was aiming for a movie similar to Traffic (which I
loved), but he didn't pull together the story well enough.

In the theater I saw the Producers. It wasn't my first, second, third or
fourth choice, but I was outvoted. And I loved it! Soooo FUNNY. The guy
from Desperate Housewives really stole the show.
On DVD, I have been watching Six Feet Under. I never saw it on HBO but I
heard the series finale is spectacular. So I started at the beginning. I'm
at the beginning of season two right now. So far, I am LOVING it.

I wish I had more time but I will be getting into town late on Tuesday
evening and returning home early Thursday. The conference will take all
of my time but I really think you should just go by yourself. I go to
movies alone during the year when I have no one who will accompany me.
You can't talk during the movies and if it's good, it's definitely worth
it.

Via Netflix – Logan's Run
One of those movies I just have to watch when it comes on. I remember being
so impressed with this vision of the future when I was young (of course, the
idea of dying at 30 didn't bother me then!). One reviewer on Netflix
slammed the movie for production design since it was made only 1 year before
Star Wars. I still like it and think it has a more interesting plot than
SW.

My DH cries pretty easily watching movies too. He cries at movies more
than I do – especially at anything involving children or
honor/tradition (military or otherwise). One exception – Finding
Neverland. I sobbed like a baby! They should put a warning on that
movie for mothers of boys. Like a Five Kleenex Box alert, or
something. I have never cried so much at a movie as I did watching
that one.
When Brokeback Mountain comes out on DVD, I'm going to rent it anyway,
and I'm sure he'll watch it with me – he can't resist my popcorn.

Over NYE Momma & Daddy rented two movies from Blockbuster, which I guess was
a little "picked over" by the time they got into town from the farm...so we
ended up with "40 Year Old Virgin" (This was funny, but a little on the lewd
side for me. I wouldn't want to own it, but I think most ppl would think
it's pretty hilarious, judging by the reactions of the other 3 ppl in the
room!) and "Cheaper By The Dozen" (recommended to me by my physical
therapist..and I had been wondering if the sequel was worth seeing, but I
needed to see #1 first and I wasn't too impressed. I got bored & started to
talk to my Mom!!). I'm not much of a movie person anyways, I have a short
attention span and I get bored!! I prefer TV, honestly. I want to get that
"Band Camp" DVD from the "American Pie" people though that they had on the
previews!! That looks really funny! I don't care for lewdness in movies,
but I would make an acception for these crazy guys!! I am heading to
Walmart today to see if I can find it. If not, the quest goes on today
until I have my hot little hands on the number. It went on sale on 12/26/05
according to the trailer.

I ordered the uncorked version of Wedding Crashers off Ebay last week. It

Heath Ledger deserves serious acclaim for this role, that's for sure. You
forget the fact that he's in love with a man and all that you wind up
connecting with is the fact that his character can't verbally express his
emotions nearly as well as he would like to.
You wonder if it will ever get better for him or if he will just become more
and more reclusive and hermitic. He pulls of "lost, introverted and confused
to the point of *seeming* more self centered than his really is" so very
well. He was like a mixture of John Wayne and James Dean all rolled in to
one. It was very interesting.

I saw "The Constant Gardener" a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.
The most recent film I've seen is "Match Point", the new Woody Allen
film that he did in London. It was interesting to see all the
locations where he filmed here and I thought the storyline was quite
gripping but I do think he's lost his touch (as it, no longer a
genius!)

Fashiondish, a visiting friend of hers and I saw Match Point last
night. quite a different take from the typical Woody allen movie. I
liked him featuring London as the location but it was a spin off a
previous movie that was quite similar.. and while I don't want to spoil
it, the last two scenes were a bit convenient
