OT holiday gift for Jewish friend

catmom <princess.san...@gmail.com>
I wanted to know if it would offensive to give a friend of mine who is
jewish a holiday gift with an angel design. When I bought it I was
thinking...an angel for an angel – but I don't want to offend her
religiously.
TIA
Sandra

Hi Sandra,
Better off giving something with no religious sentiment, I think. Our
family is mixed (I am atheist/raised catholic, and my husband is Jewish
– so we celebrate Jewish holidays and a "secular christmas" – tree,
stockings, presents, no baby Jesus)
I would think it was odd if someone gave me a ceramic angel, if that
person knew me well enough to know that my husband is Jewish and I am a
non–believer. It isn't that Jews don't really believe in angels, but
it really is more a christian thing. We usually get gifts from
non–Jewish friends that are food, or have to do with our hobbies
(triathlon/running for me, cooking for DH), or something for our home,
candle in a nice holder, that kind of thing.
Of course, I don't know your friend, and she may be very fond of the
concept of "guardian angels" or something, in which case it might be a
nice gift.

i'm a non–practicing jew and i love angels! i have angels over each window
and doorway to my home. a friend recently gave me a gift of a garden angel
.... she has wings and a halo and is holding a bouquet and has greenery all
over her skirt. she sits on my coffee table. i think if you say, an angel
for an angel, she'll like it. UNLESS she's wearing a big cross.

nope, no crosses :) Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I think my
friend will be ok with the gift.

I think the angel gift would be ok as long as it doesn't appear to be
religious. Friends have given me garden angels and I like them;
anything that helps the garden is fine with me. I was taken back when
someone actually gave me a cross. I am not religious but I was
offended.
