What to buy in Singapore?

"EMiriamD" <emiri...@gmail.com>
My daughter will be traveling to Singapore over the holidays and I'm
wondering if there's anything I ought to ask her to pick up while she's
there. I'm wide open to any and all suggestions. Are prices good
there compared to the U.S.?
TIA, as always.

Singapore has become Western/affluent enough that deals are harder to find;
however, I always manage to find things to stock up on when I'm there.
You may want to google my past posts for reference, but off the top of my
head I suggest:
– Bengawan Solo pineapple tarts and peanut cookies (available in the food
basement of Takashimaya on Orchard Rd)
– Omi sunscreen (poor woman's Anessa) which should be found in any drugstore
(Watson's is the chain that I tend to go to)
– L'oreal White Perfect skincare (also found in any drugstore)
– Triumph v–back underwear (I get mine at Isetan, which is a dept store that
can be found on Orchard Rd in Wisma Atria mall) which is the best pnaties
for low rise pants. Keep in mind that sizing is much smaller there –– I'm a
size 5 US which is M/L in Singapore.
– yellow gold if you like it
– Silk table runners in the open air market across the street from People's
Court mall
I caution against buying jade unless you know someone –– most "bargains" are
just dyed stones and not real jade. If you really want good jade, I can
provide a name of a jeweler (email me at ami{underscore}kio at
hotmaildotcom). Keep in mind that real jade is not cheap, and a good
bracelet can average S$5k–10k.
HTH,

Electronics were good when I was expatriate in S'pore but customs negated
that benefit. But besides makan (eating), shopping is the #2 passtime in
Singapore, she will enjoy the stores on Orchard Road.

Jim Thompson silk handbag I bought a small cosmetics size bag I use as
an evening clutch. Singapore is a beautiful city magically decorated
with lights for the holidays. Also have her look at jewelry, art
objects and she'll be suprised at how much is affordable.
