Warning Rant about Macy's Credit (formerly Lazarus)

mjoann <xtcmusic...@netscape.com>
Just a warning to seriously check all account statements from Macy's. I
signed up for a credit card in June, and have had an error every month
so far. First my new account discount was never applied, then a credit
card promotion discount, etc. What I caught today was the last straw,
and I will not be shopping there again, even with cash.
They were calling me almost every night (at dinner time) to sell me
account protection. I kept telling them to stop calling me. Finally, I
called and asked for a manager, and said the phone calls needed to stop.
Their call centers are in India, so the communication is terrible. I
can't tell what they are saying, and they can never address my issue.
Finally, a manager confirmed that I would be removed from the call list.
He continued, that he was going to set up my account for no more
mailings. I had to stop him and say "no." I WANT the mailings with ads
and discounts, I just don't want phone calls. This was in October and I
haven't had a call or ad since despite my clarification.
This week, I started getting very early morning calls from a collection
agency regarding my Macy's bill. I thought it was a scam to get my
information because I have never paid a bill late in my life. Then, I
started thinking, and realized that, not only have I not received ads or
discounts, but it has been a while since I saw a bill. I am in the habit
of paying my bills as soon as they come in, so it never occurred to me
that one would be late.
Today, I recalled that conversation wherein the "manager" wanted to
remove me from the mailing list, so I called to check my card balance
and see why I haven't received a bill. The automatic message wouldn't
give my a balance, so I signed up to see my bill online.
I see that I have been signed up for online billing completely against
my wishes, and that I am indeed almost a month late with a late fee that
exceeds the tiny balance I had.
I called the India call center with no luck. They can't take care of the
situation because my account is now in late status and I have to talk to
a special counselor on Monday. The woman told me that maybe they would
remove the credit bureau report if it had been less than 30 days. Sunday
is the 30th day...
I'm sure one late payment won't destroy my credit, but I am incredibly
angry that someone chose to sign me up for online only billing against
my wishes and without notifying me. If I had known the bill was due, it
would have been paid immediately without problem. I think this is pretty
scammy.
Even though their "Style & Co" jeans are the only ones I can get a good
fit from, I will NEVER shop Macy's again. I'd rather pay premium to buy
good jeans somewhere else.

I hope you are penning a letter to their headquarters, if you can find
out where they are, and giving this same blow by blow. Higher
management needs to hear these horror stories.

Screw them!!! (Had a similar problem with Lord & Taylor about 20 years ago
and I'm still seething!) The outsourcing thing just makes it all that much
more difficult. Are you near a real Macy's? If so, I'd recommend going in
person and speaking to a flesh and bones customer service person. If you
can't do that, I would suggest calling Macy's New York store.
Oh, yeah, if/when you mail a complaint (as another poster wisely suggests),
c.c. your state's attorney general and, I dunno, the US Postmaster.
Seriously.
It probably is really more about satisfaction and vindication than about
your credit rating. I didn't even *know* I had a black mark against me from
L&T because they failed to take note of and address change I'd given them
repeatedly. It never appeared in any of the credit info. that was gathered
when I bought my house or acquired "real" credit cards.
Please report back.

And, although it's probably too late for this one, unfortunately – get the
name. Get the name of the person calling, get the name of their supervisor,
ask for other identification (I usually say, "and what's your team ID
number, or whatever your company calls it?" and they'll generally come up
with *something* which'll help locate them in the bureaucracy) and log the
date and time of the call. Include that in your letter of complaint – when
you eventually do get hold of a rational human being, it makes it a lot
easier for *them* to figure out where the glitch is which is losing them
customers.
Jani
(who cordially detests all outsourced call centres except the Scottish ones,
which are – so far – staffed with nice people who actually *transfer you to
the local branch* after a mere thirty seconds of mutually fruitless
discussion)

In case anyone is curious about how my Macy's nightmare is going... I
can say it is ridiculously worse.
Since they have placed my account in default, I couldn't talk to any of
the regular people over the weekend and had to wait until their
"counselors" were in M–F 9–5. I am eager to get this taken care of, so I
called bright and early on Monday (soon after the collection agency woke
me up at 8:00.) All day, the special "counselors" have been unable to
access my account because their computers are down. They tell me to call
back in an hour. It is now 3:00, and I don't have much faith in getting
a hold of anyone today.
AND, as if what they've done to me isn't enough... I received a notice
from a collection agency in the mail. I swear I am not lying or
exaggerating in any way: It states that my balance past due is $5.00.
YES, that is five dollars. I owed the minimum because my total was only
$22 and change. The collection agency notice says I need to pay $35 by
the 16th – $5 for last month, $5 for this month and and $25 late fee.
Wow, if they hadn't decided to stop sending my bills without notifying
me, I would have paid the original amount in full like I always do.

Please keep posting about this dilemma. BTW, when I had a hideously similar
issue with L&T, I also called the collection agency and told them what was
happening. I imagine they can easily access your entire history––down to
the last time you went to the potty (and whether it was #1 or #2)––and can
easily verify your stellar credit history. They may even be able to put you
on the fast track to whose ass to kick at Macy's.
Is Macy's a May Company store? I seem to recall that May bought Macy's
recently. If that's the case, you might also be able to take your complaint
higher up on the food chain.

Macy's is the Chevrolet of Federated Department Stores, while
Bloomingdale's is the Cadillac.

May was the acquired one.
All the regional names will change to Macy's, including Marshall
Field's (just about the time they probably got used to the new name of
Dayton's and Hudson's in those parts of the country).

Wait. If everything is going to be Macy's, what is going to happen at malls

In my town we have a mall with Macy's at one end and a May co. store
called Kaufmann's at the other end. The Kaufmann's is going to close
eventually and nothing's being said about what will replace it, if
anything. It's very sad because Kaufmann's has been here since I was a
youngster, long before Lazarus came on the scene. We also had Gimbel's
many years ago.
The Kaumann's will also be gone from downtown Pittsburgh and the Lazarus
anchor store is already history. In the age of Wally's, department
stores are a pitiful anachronism, but I sure will miss them.

Last week when I worked at our thrift store I saw that someone had
donated a black wool pant suit with a mink collar made for Bullock's of
California. Bullock's was my Nordstrom in the late 60s and early 70s.
I was a young working woman with a passion for clothes and many a dollar
went to that store. The suit was so nice and the label was gorgeous.
Unfortunately it was way to small for me but a wise shopper bought it
just to use the collar on another outfit. It was a steal at $15.

I'm such a compulsive saver, it's a wonder I don't have anything left
from that wonderful era. I do have a few things of my mother's that I
saved. Wouldn't wear them, they just remind me of her. In many cases,
she never wore them either, but she had to have them because they were
on "clearance." She taught me only too well, I guess. ;–)

The SF store is called Macy's West. Ours is the second largest in CA
after San Francisco and carries a lot of lines not found at other Macys.
I think that's the case of most department stores with the same name.
There are big Nordstroms and smaller ones. Macys in Santa Barbara
probably has 1/3 the merchandise of the stores in Fresno. We actually
have a Macys home store, men's and children's store, and then the three
story store with women's fashions, accessories, housewears, etc.

At the Houston Galleria, which both has a Macy's and a Foley's (and is
the only local mall with both):
The current Macy's will close
The current Foley's will be rebadged
The staffs will be merged
Federated has announced 75 other "going out of business" sales
starting after the holidays.
http://tinyurl.com/9x2s6
At least in the Galleria, I distinctly remember Simon Property Group
saying they were waiting expectantly to get their hands on the Macy's
space. If it wasn't so horrid to get up there, I'd go see what they
did with the old Lord & Taylor space. They were quite happy.
