Home hair color question

"SueB" <zob...@yahoo.com>
Due to financial constraints (read: Christmas shopping), I'm going to
have to color my hair myself. My question is, do I have to use one of
those color removers before I begin? The last time I had my hair
colored was in early June. With my hair shoulder length, I've got
about 3/4 of it still with color, but I'm too chicken to use that root
touch–up stuff. So is a color remover necessary? I appreciate any
help!

I'm not a pro hair person by any means, but it is my understanding
that color remover (i.e. Metalex) should only be used in dire
circumstances as it can be damaging to the hair.

Not a professional either, but I don't think you should have to strip, as
long as you are using the same ir very similar color. What I'd do is apply a
patch test at the roots and see how well you are matching the color. If it
matches or is very close, then go ahead an apply it just at the roots, and
then comb it through for the last 5 minutes before you wash it out. You
might be suprised at how easily you are able to match the salon color. I
know I was.

When I used to home color my hair I never used color remover, nor did I
try to be super careful about only coloring the roots. I colored
wherever the hair had grown in and then smushed it all around the last
couple of minutes. The color always evened itself out with no problem.

Not a pro either, but I would suggest bringing a friend to help match
the dye box to you old color; then use the touch–up instructions,
essentially color the new growth (roots) for most of the session, then
comb through to the older. Unfortunately this may require a second box
of dye to reach long hair.
