Gift Ideas for 13 year old girl?

"Mme. India" <mmein...@comcast.net>
We are expecting a visit over Chanukah this year from my brother–in–law and
13–year old niece, whom I haven't seen since she was 5. From what I've
heard, she is shy, smart, interested in theater and fashion. To make things
more difficult, she lives in the Bay Area (originally in the city of San
Francisco, now in a rural town 2 hours outside the city).
I have no idea what is "in" among teenagers these days, and really no idea
what is "in" on the West Coast. We have e–mailed her father for gift
suggestions. I don't want to go the GC route because all the other kids
will have actual presents to open. Any suggestions?

I think Stevie has a southern California into fashion daughter so she
should be able to give you lots of ideas. I've also forwarded your
questions to my 21 who although older, always knows what's "hot."

You can get her a micro tote bag in a fun fabric or cosmetic bag filled with
teen cosmetics, those are really appreciated. She can carry it around. Lip
Smackers, Bonne Bell, a little mirror. etc.

Cosmetics, a book on theatrical history, a big empty box with a GC and
a note promising to hit the shops with her on a certain day, a subscription
to a fashion magazine.

Teen Vogue may be good for her age. Once girls are 16 or 17, it's just
too juvenile.

I have the 14 year old making the recommendations:
find out her fave movie and get the dvd
boots–– flat slouchy boots from delias or alloy
handbags.. hobos or something tootsie roll in shape or embellished from
similar kinds of sites
Urban Outfitters
CDs are always great. Lindsey Lohan has a new one out..
also maybe the gossip girl books?
also jewelry.. if she has pierced ears, earrings, some layered type
necklaces
go to Loehmans/alloy/delias/ VS
either cute pjs in silly prints (PINK is a good one from VS) and/or
hoodie plus drawstring pants.
Try bath and makeup stuff
sonia kashuk kits, bath salts, shower gels. those kinds of things are
lovely
healing garden has some nice sets/fragrances

Sooo...stage makeup!

Thank you all SO MUCH, these are some great ideas, I really appreciate it.
Her dad is very busy so I may not hear from him before the holidays, but
this will be a big help.

Right now my own 13 year old loves anything from Abercrombie and Fitch
and Hollister.
Jeans and jean skirts with rhinestones are huge.
Also, she loves the Juicy Couture charm bracelet and additional charms.
Juicy flip flops are so cute and very reasonable.
If the girl is into the preppy style, as mine is, Lacoste, Polo, and
Lilli Pulitzer is big right now.
I second the suggestion for Cell phone embellishments –– my daughter
loves these.
Also on her list –– Dessert glosses and Chanel or Stila lipglosses
I wouldn't get her anything at Limited Too as many 13 year olds (like
my daughter and her friends) think they're too grown up for that store.
Hope this helps!

I can tell you what's big on my DD13's list this year, some of which
she already got for her bday last month:
– Lush bath bombs (always a huge hit)
– Anything from Sephora – lipgloss, conditioners, moisturizers, etc
(none of the 13 y.o.'s in our area are allowed yet to wear anyting but
lipgloss outside the house, but they're all big into experimenting and
practicing right now)
– A wool plaid pleated mini skirt (to wear to the school dance, of
course!)
– Those scarfs made of faux fur balls (you can get them in a dept store
or in TJMaxx or Marshall's)
– Any clothes from the Gap, Old Navy, or The Limited
– iTune gift certificate (but you said no GC – still... this would
probably be highly appreciated if she has an iPod)
– Earrings if her ears just got pierced ;–)
– Japanese comic books (Manga) – the girls are all into learning how to
cartoon
– a quality hairbrush, the kind you buy at a froo–froo hair salon and
not at the drugstore; her hair is straight so she wanted a wide, flat
brush
– CASH. So she can go shop for her own clothes, while at the mall with
friends
– Pretty writing journal
– Sleepover bag is also nice for this age– Lands' End for example has
the extra large canvas tote that you can get monogrammed. My girls both
have these and they love them for slumber parties.
– Cell phone jewelry – a little thing, but my DD and her friends like
them. Little stick–on jewels you can use to decorate your cell phone.
Kit came with a bubble pen for writing your name on the cell too.
– Mini digital camera – they sell them at the drugstore around here for
about $20. You can hook it onto your belt or backpack, and it's no
bigger than about 2x2 inches. Takes about 30 photos that you can then
download to your computer.
Do you have a digital photo of her? On Kodakgallery you can order
sticker photos. My DD thought this was totally cool. She's stuck them
on all the presents she's giving this year.

Isn't it funy how stores like Limited Too appeal to upper elementary
school girls, 4th through 6th grade, then the early teens want A&E,
Hollister, and similar labels? The older teens are looking through
their mom's closets or at least at junior apparel.

Interesting. I've never actually looked at a Teen Vogue but assumed it would
be for the 16/17 year age group. So it's actually for the 12–15 year age?
But sometimes I wonder what age group Vogue itself is aimed at :–)

Cheers!

The monied classes; it has nothing to do with age. In today's paper I
read about Lindsay Lohan and Ashley Olson at the most recent Chanel
show.

If she's into theatre and you are in NYC (or near?), how about a show
t–shirt? My son is 13 and one of his best friends (female) wears a
"wicked" t–shirt all the time. I don't know whether another show would
be more appropriate.
I think a trendy bag would be cool. I saw a girl carrying a mini–purse
made out of [empty] Capri Sun juice box pouches––she got tons of
comments about that.
My daughter has a string of lights with paper globe covers hanging in
her room and has given them to friends. "Accessories" for the room are
popular.
And, I'll bet that even though she lives two hours from San Francisco,
but they probably don't have far to go to "civilization". So even a
GAP gift would probably be easily exchangable if it were not to her
taste or choice of colors.
