Help! Will these shrink?

"cofarb" <do...@cofarb.com>
I found "my" navy corduroy jeans at J. Crew *and* they went on sale but the
smallest size they had is a bit larger than I need. The pants are too loose
at the waist––they will gap when I sit down. I double–checked and there is
no smaller size available in navy. So...the question is: If I wash these
(tiny url below) in hot water and dry them on high heat, will they shrink?
(I promise not to hold you responsible if you are mistaken, but I would love
some informed opinions.)

It's really hard to say. I was going to say if they were all cotton, most
certainly they would shrink. Then I noticed the description said 'stretch'
cord. That magic word could keep them from shrinking as much as you need.
I couldn't find a more detailed description to look at the fabric makeup.
I think you can still expect some shrinkage but over time – not right away.
Maybe not soon enough for you.

Call and ask if they are preshrunk.
If not, they should shrink a tad.

I did call and talked to a guy (okay, I'm sexist about laundry) who even
asked his supervisor but no one could tell me exactly what would happen. He
kept repeating that "Our clothes are not designed to shrink...but we don't
guarantee that they *won't* shrink." He should be working for the
government.
I think I will take the chance with one pair, washing and drying on high.
If I gained about 3 lbs. they would fit fine. (Attn. a.f.ers: please send

Can you have them altered at the waist? My daughter has this done all
the time. What if they shrunk in the length and were too short for your
lengthy legs?

Probably not. I bought the 100% cotton cords and wash them in warm water
followed by a thorough regular dryer cycle, and at most they shrank 1/4".
Since the ones that you're looking at are stretch, I doubt that they'll
shrink enough for you to notice.

In my experience things you want to shrink NEVER SHRINK and those
that you do always do. It's just a natural law, like gravity.

Depending on the style of the pants and your personal style, how about a
low riding belt..(sort of wide...buckle something different, like a cell
phone or brass knucles (don't mess with my pants)...worn outside your
shirt? I'm new to the site...obviously my suggestion is not directed to

IME, pants never shrink in the waist – they shrink in the length. So I
wouldn't bank on it. Also IME J.Crew stuff mostly comes preshrunk.
But have no fear – if it's just the waist, then wash, dry, and take it
to a seamstress to get it altered to Cofarb perfection!

If the pants have any kind of lycra or lyrca–like stuff in them,
washing them in hot water and drying them on high will only break down
that material and make the pants even looser.

Yes. The pants came from their website––and they have lots in my size but
not in navy. I decided to keep one pair––the ones I tried to shrink, which
only shrank a little; they may mold to my body after awhile. I'll return
the others...

I know that things that have a lot of lycra in them––like swimsuits––do
break down and get brittle with abuse, but I've never had that happen with
things that have 1% lycra (that's what the pants have), at least not to a
noticeable extent. I usually wash in cold water but jeans and other heavy
clothes always end up in a hot dryer. I try to be gentler with my laundry
but sooner or later, everything gets abused.
I'm going to return one pair, keep the others (which shrank a tiny bit but
not enough to be a good fit). I do think they will eventually mold to fit a
little better.

cofarb, why are you alterations phobic?
Awww, c'mon, not *ten* boxes. (Not any if I mention where the stash is––the
kids are probably checking my "sent" file for clues.)
There are a few reasons I'm alterations phobic. First, my mom used to sew
most of my clothes (that's a better topic for a psychosis newsgroup than for
a fashion one). She usually made a muslin before making a pattern for the
first time, and she would/could alter a pattern pretty well. BUT she
despised doing alterations. Aside from very basic hem stuff, she did not
alter my clothes––homemade or storeboughten.
A few years ago, I did find a seamstress who worked wonders on some of my
clothes, but she is a victim of her own success––so busy that it takes quite
some time to get an appointment or to get items back from her. (And last
year she had the *nerve* to take time away from her business sewing in order
to sew wedding and bridesmaids' dresses for her daughter's wedding!)
I haven't established a relationship with another alterations person. To
me, it's almost as intimidating as going to a new doctor.
Oh, yeah, and I hate spending real money (vs. cofarb bucks) on alterations.
I'd rather buy the cookies.

I'm probably "elderly" by AF standards, but I'm very immature.<g>
I did keep one pair of the pants, and I've worn them with a belt that's
probably similar the type you wrote about: not quite as chunky as the ones
"we" wore in the 60s, but heavy leather, almost as wide as the belt loops.
I don't really wear the type of shirt that would be worn outside my pants
and long enough to belt. (And I think I'm too short and small to carry off
a look like that.) At this time of year, everything is layered but none of
the layers is tunic–length. I wear a lot of bodysuits under it all, because
it's too cold hereabouts to expose *any* midriff. When I returned the other
pair of cords, I requested an exchange for the smaller size in another color
(they didn't have the navy in a smaller size). Those may be sold out by the
time it all gets processed but at least I tried.
Stevie sent me some chocolate so I could just wear the larger size pants but
she didn't send enough.
Thanks for the suggestion. Please keep posting.
