Musk oil

Jay <...@ttelus.net>
When I first started wearing musk oil perfume (back in the '70s), the
one I had came in a black bottle. Does anyone know what brand this
was, and if it is still available? My friend had Ambergris in the same
brand, and IIRC, there was a third scent in the oil family.
I'm also looking for recommendations on modern musk oil, just in case
this old one doesn't exist anymore.
Thanks!

Hi Jay,
I'm a perfume junkie, but I don't have an answer for you ... not sure
if this is helpful, but I'd recommend checking out "Now Smell This" to
see if you can find an answer – it's blog all about perfume
(http://nowsmellthis.blogharbor.com/). They have a lot of
recommendations on perfumes – and I think they may have message boards
where you could ask the same question. If you're looking for a good
place to buy on the web (one of my favorites because they offer a ton
of samples for sale), check out www.luckyscent.com – they also feature
perfume recommendations.

My very favorite from back in the 70's (and it still exists) is a musk oil
called "Skin". It used to be by Bonne Bell but i believe (not certain) it's
now by Parfums de Coeur. The spray version isn't the same exact scent
as the oil.

Was it the Houbigant/Alyssa Ashley musk / ambergris / civet trio? I loved
those, haven't seen them for years ....

Alyssa Ashley still do a couple of musks, but they're not the same. Lighter
and slightly "soapy", somehow :(

Yes – Houbigant rings a bell! Is Houbigant now Alyssa Ashley? The
Alyssa Ashley musk is definitely not the scent I remember.

I'm remembering it as Jovan, too. The time frame is right, and the third
was maybe civet.
The Houbigant/Alyssa Ashley story seems to come from the
"www.100perfumes.com/" site. I associate the Houbigant of that era with
"Chantilly" and other florals.

Is this the thread you meant?
http://www.100perfumes.com/forums/Perfume/m13572.htm
There's one on eBay described as "vintage" which looks much like the
packaging I remember:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5630069966&category=11847
and here it's "Alyssa Ashley Musk by Houbigant"
http://uk.bizrate.com/buy/noncat_prod_details__oid––337098321.html
So, I reckon there was a takeover at some point, and along the line, the
original formula was replaced by the current one. Which is definitely not
the same :(
