Sincere question about how/where to wear fur coat?

"Mme. India" <mmein...@comcast.net>
Please don't flame me for this, it's a serous question and I do care about
animals.
I have recently inherited a full–length, gorgeous, natural and expensive
mink coat (Dior) with extraordinary sentimental value. I would never have
purchased such a coat for myself, but it belonged to my grandmother, it was
her pride and joy, she didn't get to wear it because she took ill shortly
after purchasing it, desperately wanted it to get use, and we shared the
same name so it is monogrammed with "my" name.
I want to honor her memory by wearing it. We are also having a serious cold
snap right now. However, I'm scared to wear it because I don't want to be
attacked by PETA (it looks brand new), don't want it stolen and don't want
something spilled on it (I spend a lot of my time around small children).
Like Cofarb, I believe in using things regularly rather than "keeping them"
for best, and like Jen, I believe it would be a waste of the animals' lives
to not use this vintage coat.
So far I have only worn it to family members' homes, and to events at my
childrens' schools where it's cold enough to keep it on and no food is being
served. If anyone here owns a fur, or any other coat with monetary and/or
sentimental value, can you tell me where you wear it, and how you deal with
it when you're there (re checking it or holding it). I may be extra
paranoid about this because I once had an expensive designer coat (plain
wool) that I loved stolen by deception (a similar–looking coat was put in
its place), but I am really concerned.
I'm going out into the city tonight and it's going to be FREEZING, but I
will probably chicken out, leave it home and end up freezing in my leather
jacket.

I wear it to social events where it won't look like I'm showing off; in
other words, events where other women are wearing furs. I wear it when
we go out to dinner at nice restaurants and when it is really cold at
night. When we were in Rome between Christmas and New Year's two years
ago, many women wore their coats in the day time and it was no big deal.
You live in a much colder climate so you should have more opportunities
to wear it. Personally I would not let any member of PETA influence my
decisions.
Aren't there enough policemen around in the city to make you feel safer
about wearing it tonight?

Audrey, thanks for the suggestions. You just gave me a couple of other
ideas of places where it would be appropriate to wear it.
We are going to dinner at a nice restaurant (where it would probably be
fine) but after that we are going to a jazz club in Greenwich Village where
there is some walking on the street involved. I am probably just paranoid
(and there are plenty of police around) but I keep reading about people
getting pies or chicken blood thrown at them by PETA in NYC.

They are usually outside Neiman Marcus in San Francisco during the
holiday season. Let your man and the good NYPD protect you during your
walk. I truly understand your concern. I am sure a furrier would know
how it could be cleaned if anything happens. Enjoy your evening.

And this is the reason they invented the sensible Republican cloth
coat (as first worn by Second Lady Reagain).
Actually, the term "sensible Republican cloth coat" was coined by
Richard Nixon, referring to his wife, Pat.

I don't own a fur coat and probably never will but if I did I would not
turn it over to a coat check room. There have been stories about furs
being "disappeared" from coat check rooms.

It sounds as if you've inherited a beauty, filled with memories...I wear
my furs out and about, perhaps here in Maine people see it as more
for warmth than anything else. I even wear it grocery shopping...and
have never has anyone said/done anything to me.
Wear it in good health, and nice to see you posting again!

If they'd throw the book at those PETA freaks a few times, they'd back
off.
In other words, press charges.
don't want it stolen
That's a danger with even a sensible Republican cloth coat.

Don't worry, they use the meat... just not for human food.

Probably left over from health–improving clinical laboratory tests on
chickens.

My fox shrug is too fancy in style for day wear. I wear it to shows,
evenings out, and private parties. I generally keep it stored at the
local furrier, since we have free check out privileges.
As far as possible damage is concerned, don't worry about the PETA
people. They generally don't go after individuals. Most spills, etc.
can be cleaned out of a fur. See www.fur.org for more information on
cleaning and storing your fur.
Perhaps the maintenance information will put you mind at ease. Then
you'll be more comfortable wearing the fur more frequently. My
condolences on your loss. You have a lovely memento and I hope it
brings joy.
Xoxo,

i have no answer to your question, but just wanted to say that
i'd be afraid to wear a fur coat in public. i've heard so many
times about activists throwing red paint on fur–wearing matrons.
and i don't mean this as a flame; i know it's a sensitive issue

They generally only go after high–profile matrons.

Part of the Checkers Speech, iirc. And the next time we saw Pat, she was
wearing a whopping full–length mink. Or maybe it was made out of Checkers'
fur.

I do own several fur coats including a beautiful full–length vintage fur
that I bought at an antiques show; the dealer was moving to Florida and was
selling her own fur which appeared to be from the 1960s. She was quite
petite so the coat wasn't going to fit very many women, but cofarb was the
perfect size. I wore the coat to dinner last night. I did NOT put it in
the coat room.
And yes, I do believe these things should be worn and enjoyed, but not if
your personal discomfort intereferes with your pleasure.
Regardless of what you do with this particular fur, India, I recommend you
have it inspected and reglazed by a good furrier on a regular basis so that
it doesn't deteriorate. At least that will protect the coat for future
generations to enjoy it.

Oops, too much history floating around in my head.
It was in the same speech that mentioned the sensible Republican pet
named Checkers.

Classic Eisenhower Administration Republican dogola.

IIRC, Checkers wasn't big enough to make anything other than a fur
bikini bottom.

Don't say nasty things about California native sons (and daughters)
unless you want to say them about Junior US Senator Barbara Boxer. Or
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
About Barbara Boxer: Despite the name, she just isn't the pugilistic
type. Pugilism sounds more like the Governor of California ("go ahead,
make his day"). <grin/duck>
