I notice that I have been eyeing an MP3 player,but. . .

saylo1...@yahoo.com
hi everyone:
These days I work from home. There is a lot of down time.
So, with my spare time, I have been looking at MP3 players.
I rationalize that I could listen to lectures that pertain to my
business (ie I am a trader of foreign currencies).
But, the truth is that I already have an MP3 player that has 64
mb of memory (as far as memory goes, it is rather small) that I don't
even use. I do have a tape recorder with taped lectures that I use
more often than my mp3 player (I listen to the tape recorder a lot). I
rationalize that if I had more storage on my MP3 player, I could store
many tracks and listen to them whenever I wanted to. But, I really
think it is a rationalization. I believe that what will likely happen
if I do buy the 1 gig MP3 player is that it will just collect
dust––after the novelty wears off.
I just wanted to come here and talk about it. I was close to
running out and buying it, but I thought I'd come here first and talk
it out before I fall into the trap of impulsively buying something.

I had some of the same concerns about buying an MP3 player. But as it turned
out, I loved it more than I ever imagined I would. I found myself using it
at the gym, at work, and just tooling around town while doing my shopping.
My first MP3 was a Creative MUVO with 256 MB. After I realized how much I
loved it, I wished I had gotten more space. But a few months later I bought
a an Audiovox Smartphone to which I added an extra 1 GB of flash memory to
store my music. So I was able to replace the MUVO with my Smartphone. When
the phone rings, the music pauses to let the call through. I just love it.

Not sure if/why alt.fashion is the forum for this––I imagine there are
techie newsgroups that would provide more feedback. However...
I had an MP3 player that used removable storage chips; they didn't hold much
and it was a nuisance to keep changing the contents of the chips. I got a
30 gig Ipod when they came out. It is also a nuisance in a lot of ways; I
think it's been debugged in many ways but I'm not about to replace it. I
find it wonderful for using while traveling, though the battery doesn't last
all that long before it must be recharged. (I think there are add–ons that
address that issue now.) It can also be attached directly to my stereo amp
or my computer so I could theoretically get rid of my CDs. I use a cassette
tape–type adapter to connect the Ipod in my car; I find that it works better
than the wireless FM transmitter that is sold for Ipods. Keeping the
battery charged in that scenario is also an issue. (And I find that it
takes quite a long time to charge the battery. Again, this may have been
improved in later models.)
I spent so much time loading music onto the Ipod that I decided it was
worthwhile to buy an external hard drive for my computer so I had a backup
in case something happens to the Ipod. (I also back up my documents.) I
was able to get an 80 gig external hard drive for about $75––a real data
storage bargain.

Okay, if you're at home, how about listening to MP3's on the computer
either via headphones or hooking up the computer to a stereo system.
If you want portability, there are portable CD players that can play
MP3's burned to CD and they're cheaper than flash based or hard drive
based MP3 players.
If you're afraid of not using it, you could get a multipurpose device.
Some phones can also play MP3, like this one that also has a camera:

There's multipurpose media devices that can play MP3:

MP3 players can be fashion accessories a la:
The Hello Kitty MP3 player

Hello Kitty iPod/MP3 player case
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6012740821&category=39568
Juicy Couture iPod case at Nordies (there's one for the shuffle too):

And for the PSP owning geekbabes like myself:
http://www.purseblog.com/tech–cases/pink–sakura–sony–psp–poach/
Even one from Fendi (and others) as seen during Fashion Week
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable/the–whole–pretapsp–125672.php
The Vaja cases, so classy:

I've used my PSP's photo displaying capabilities to assist me while
shopping, really. Instead of trying to describe something, show it.
The web browsing comes in handy too, AF/MUA anywhere there's WiFi.
..

Sounds like your iPod's battery is wearing out. Eventually they won't
hold very much of a charge, same thing happens to other Li–Ion
batteries. It's possible to replace it with some work. One thing I
think Apple did wrong is not putting an easily user replaceable batter
in it.

$75? Where did you get it? Mine is a WD (Western Digital) 80 gig
model I got for $89 at K–mart. They still go for around that price.

Why don't you use your computer as a MP3 player?
It does have a fairly good one out of the box that not only does MP3
but one of the major proprietary protected formats. The other is
avaiable as a download from its provider.
Alas, for purchased downloaded music, you've got two choices: a sole
source provider of both music and players; a system with many players,
many music stores, and one format licensed to many.
Interestingly enough, when a computer magazine opened the sole source
provider's machine, they found they had a chip with hardware support
for the other format! Reportedly not the first time the sole source
provider dumbed down a third party's hardware to the formats the
apparatchik mandated.
After all, with the employees of the sole source provider... it's
their Jobs on the line if their work goes to the Gates. <grin/duck>
I believe that what will likely happen if I do buy the 1 gig

wears off.
The old tradeoff between size and capacity rears its ugly head again.

A fact that some of their competition is trying to exploit.
One thing I think Apple did wrong is not putting an

"Easily user replaceable batter?"
If that was the case, they'd be competing with General Mills in the
computer business. (General Mills once made computers.)
