Black Friday Shopping

"Queue" <qu...@fashionhouse.com>
Anyone have plans for Black Friday shopping? I've been seeing TV ads for a
number of stores that will open at (gasp) 5am, including Wal–Mart and JC
Penney. I can't imagine myself getting up to go shopping that early but
obviously many will.
I haven't planned my shopping at all. My sister and I are planning to get
the velour zips and pants for $10 at Old Navy for super casual wear. Other
than that, I haven't had a chance to even think about what to get.
What time did you start shopping and what did you get?

The only thing tempting me is 4 12 packs of diet 7 up at $1.88 each.
It's at the drug store a short way from home. I'll also go to the local
boutique that is having a sidewalk sale in addition to all store items
at 20% off. I doubt that I'll leave the house before 10 a.m. because
that's when the boutique store sale begins. I'll spend most of the day
unpacking and putting out decorations.

I'm going to be contrarian and shop at the grocery store... AFTER
they've just had probably their biggest day of the year (Thanksgiving
Eve).
And not a SuperTarget/Wal–Mart Supercenter, either.

no, not me. "The Mall" actually opened at 1 am this morning...they had
outside entertainment (3 different bands, 1 is one of my favorites that
plays disco cover songs) from 9pm on. The Sheraton across the street
offered special room rates too. Of course it wouldn't have been too
much fun because it SNOWED all day yesterday.

I tell friends that shopping on Black Friday is for amateurs. In truth,
it's just that I despise the crowds.
Jean, were you the person who posted the Polo.com f&f discount code? I used
it this morning to acquire some Polo T–shirts for someone who lives
overseas; he had asked me to get him a couple of the shirts at the outlet
mall, but with the discount code, combined with the price of gas, it made a
lot more sense to just order the shirts online. Thank you!

Been and gone. Grocery stores have their Black Friday on Wednesday.
When I arrived, the surplus frozen turkeys (which will undoubtedbly
get eaten over the next few weeks during the remaining holidays) were
being hauled into the back and replaced with other merch.
And not a SuperTarget/Wal–Mart Supercenter, either.
In my case, Kroger. Nice and slow there.

I agree with you, today is for....amateurs! There have been some
interesting offers online as well. I took advantage of some free
shipping (no tax) from Bergdorf Goodmans' this morning.
Glad to hear the Polo cod worked for you, glad to enable!

It IS for amateurs. I try to avoid any shopping on Black Friday,

Hate em. It's not the actual people that are the problem, just too
many crowded together.

had to be at the mall at 7 in the morning. not because i wanted to go
shopping but because i'm one of the sales associates people like to torment
during the season. O_o. went on break and tried to wander penny's and
macy's. gave up. went back to work. went on lunch break. waited forever
to get food. ate, wandered to bloomingdales. saw boots. contemplated
boots. passed on boots. got off an hour early at 2, since the other girl
came in early. took that chance and wandered back over to bloomingdales.
tried on boots. purchased boots. received 15 dollar gift card for
purchase. wandered through mall again. wandered into hottopic. purchased
a white Tripp shirt. Tripp rocks. ^_^
http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=62515&CategoryID=1570
boots I got for $104 instead of $200.

I'm still considering if I'm going to keep the boots. they seem a bit flat
footed for being so bloody expensive. if gel insoles don't help them...
back to the store they shall go.
patricia the exhausted sales associate.

It was moderately crowded at Best Buy, fine at CompUSA.

I stopped at Marshall's & Michael's Crafts on my way to the gym this
evening. I bought a purple wool cardigan, 2 pairs of Limited pants in
mauve & plum, 3 skeins of furry teal yarn, bamboo knitting needles &
black embroidery floss. Only the yarn was a "Black Friday" sale item.
BF went out this morning and bought a video game and a new radar
detector to replace the one that was stolen a couple months ago.

Heh! I do the same thing. Black Friday is to real shoppers what New Year's
Eve is to real drinkers –– Amateur Night. A real shopper can find a 75% off
bargain any day of the year.

I don't think I'm a Power Shopper, but I try and keep a keen eye open
for sales and discounts. I have one email address that is pretty much
just emails from online merchants – but the ones *I* am interested in
and actually asked for their promotional emails. Crabtree & Evelyn to
Saks to Sally Beauty to Bluefly. Sometimes they actually do mail out
good coupon codes, notifications of online sales, shipping offers and
so on.
Wilson Leather's website is having a sale on jackets, so I replaced
Joe's beaten–up suede jacket with a leather bomber. Marked down from
$300 to $99. He looks great in it!
I have a 15% off coupon at Talbots good until the end of the year.
I'm just itching to use it but I'm hoping there will be a good
clearance before it expires so I can get the maximum return. I can
always find something there I want. :)
I do kind of miss the early days of online shopping when there were
$20 off $20 type coupon codes. Ah, nostalgia. :D

We decided to take advantage of my parents' free babysitting service to
go look for new blinds. Little did we suspect that blinds are a hot
Black Friday commodity –– the store was packed. After a substantial
wait, we were able to order vertical blinds that we love for the living
room, dining room and our bedroom.

Verrrrrry cute. I only bought one item at Hot Topic –– a pair of hot pink
pants. Good for New Year's Eve and that's about it! :)

Yep. I usually get the majority of my shopping done before black
friday, and this year was no different. I have been buying things &
stashing them away since September.
Unfortunately, my girls are still amateurs so I did have to brave the
mall this weekend to help them get their own shopping done. Along the
way, I couldn't resist a few things.... for me. ;–)
Including at AT a cashmere sweater that was steeply discounted, and a
few pairs of gorgeous earrings, also on sale (I love AT jewelry but
view it as overpriced).
And a fabulous – simply fabulous – holiday dress at Filene's, for major
cofarb bucks, 75% off: I haggled a major discount because it was a
re–ticket and had clearly been worn already (drycleaning will make it
new again), then there was an additional black friday discount on top
of that. I had to wait in line a full 45 minutes to purchase that one,
including haggling time with the manager, but it was worth every minute
and every blister on my foot – I smile every time I open my closet and
see it hanging there waiting to be worn this holiday season.
And a really cool, funky shirt for $10 at Marshall's that I'm giving to
my DD but ultimately it'll come back to me, hee hee. She'll probably
find occasion to wear it once or twice then outgrow it by next year,
when she can hand it down to me. (I have been able to rationalize quite
a few purchases this way lately! Hurray for having girls, not boys!)
Otherwise, I'm glad I got my shopping done early, not because of
discounts but because the gifts I bought last month are all picked over
now and if I'd waited, I wouldn't have found them in the stores! I
really hate the crowds and the pressure to buy something – anything –
when it's all picked over. With that said, it is nice to be able to
wander around without any particular mission or pressure, and buy
things that just jump out at you and are begging to be added to my
closet.

I have everything in the mail, but some of it won't ship until Cyber
Monday (a term I read somewhere for the Monday after Black Friday: I
think it was Yahoo! News but don't quote me on that) or later.
The main things are the Savings Bond for Ethan (the newest Perrin,
keeping that tradition going) and 17 (!) Shutterfly Photo Show DVDs in
7 shipments in addition to mine. The DVD covers all the branches of
the family I've seen in the past 25+ years; I could have done more but
I hardly stay in contact with Pop's sisters' kids (they're all of the
country, unlike Mom's side). On Pop's brothers' side, one's in Texas
and the other's in Australia.
I have a standing invitation to see the Texas Perrins (in fact, they
were offering to take me in during Rita but I had all the driving I
wanted to get to Huntsville). Even better, I've noted they're a few
miles from some really good outlet malls. <grin/duck>
DVDs are going all the way from State College, PA (via my brother in
STL) to Australia (via my cousin in the DFW Metroplex) and a lot of
points in between. I think the cousin who lives in Region 4 can read
NTSC DVDs because he can burn them (this one will be an all–regions
disc).
I sent most of them to a single family member that usually have
holiday visits planned with instructions to give them to your
siblings. In some cases... that's the next house. Figured I'd be a bit
cheaper on shipping than the obvious case, and some of them will have
complete surprises and others won't! (I had them put instructions on
the gift cards.)
