My HG LBD!

"cofarb" <do...@cofarb.com>
Oh, sure, we all search for it––the perfect little black dress––but it seems
so elusive. Sometimes we think we've found it, only to discover that it is
too long, too short or simply looks dated within a season or two.
I do believe I've found my hg lbd! It's a two–layer Betsey Johnson dress.
I first saw it about a year ago on the Nordstrom site. Wouldn't consider
buying it at full price though. Then it was gone! Recently it reappeared
on the website, marked down more than 50%. She shoots! She scores!! (It's
sold out now but I managed to find a link to the ad.)
I wore it the other night with red suede Arche "Jenny" knee–high boots
(scored at a major discount last spring). I felt like a million
(cofarb)bucks, and was very comfortable too! Tiny urls for the dress and
boots follow. My purse was just like the last url except mine is all black,
including the hearts and strap.
Anyone feel like describing her hg lbd? Also, what do you wear *with* it?
(And what's the guy equivalent of the little black dress?)

It has been ages since I've had a LBD. In Style has a great article on
them in the latest issue and I'm almost tempted to try to find one.
DH's equivalent is a dark made to measure suit with a gorgeous Zegna
tie.
I bet you looked stunning in that dress.

The men's version? A Harley jacket of course, or the equivalent to that
would be the Bengals choice of colors. (link posted earlier but who's
counting?)

Btw, the dress is cute but the boots are too Karen (Coronation Street) for
me...

Did you see the In Style article Audrey referred to in her post on this
thread? I don't remember exactly what it said but there were a large number
of examples.
Among the features of my new lbd that I think make it especially flexible:
Just–above–the–knee length (which I think will hold up style–wise for a long
time);
Three–quarter length sleeves (which will allow me to add a cardigan or
jacket––something you can't do with puffy or bell sleeves)*;
Stretchy fabric to accommodate a few more or a few fewer pounds;
Packability and washability.
*The not–full–length sleeves will help show off a bracelet and the low
neckline lets me wear any necklace or pendant.
Keep hunting!

with a sheer net top from the sternum up and a body skimming princess
seemed dress in black crepe with a slightly belled out skirt and it hits
just above the knee.
It's classic, perfect and beautiful
The OTHER LBD that I have, I got off DawnSE.. We did a clothing swap of
iffy clothes. I got this assymetrical slip dress that's awesome.. in a
charmeuse type fabric and I can wear it with a couple of cropped sweaters––
one in pink that I got from Dawn as well that hits just at the top of the
rib cage; another rosy one with deconstructed chiffon edging the cuffs and
front (not cropped. but ends at the waist)
and a slightly cropped white cardigan with a sort of beading detail around
the crewneck collars and down each side of the opening
these all work really well with that second and even the first LBD

Yes, learning to sew is on my list of things to learn if I ever have

I discovered Lovcat Paris brand purses at Marshall's last winter. They are
awfully expensive if the original manufacturer's pricetags are to be
believed. But they have some "cunning" details: applique patent leather
hearts, metal heart–shaped zipper pull charms, leather ruffles, etc. They
are fairly sturdy, it seems. They come with dustbags, even at Marshall's.
I always infer from that that the purse is quality––or at least expensive.
They come in a huge variety of sizes, which I like. And most––if not
all––of them are lined in something other than black, so you can find what
you're looking for. They also have a decent number and arrangement of
inside compartments, some zippered, some not.
Unlike a lot of expensive brands, Lovcat is not something we have at local
full–price retail stores. They are pretty expensive when they hit
Marshall's but they get reduced quickly. I can usually find them for about
20% of (not "off") the original tag price. Eighty percent off is a pretty

Learning to sew is not hard, with the right teacher. Wish you lived
closer to me!
Alterations to accomodate shoulders and tummy often require more
fabric. Off the rack clothing usually hasn't much 'extra allowance' to
work with.
My TG clients have better results with starting from scratch, whether
they learn to make their own, or pay me to do it, or half and half (I
get them started and do the 'challenge' parts, they do the rest, which
develops skill with wearable results).
I've also done a few with fittings via webcam and Priority Mail...it's
not impossible.

There are usually a number of Lovcat Paris items––purses and wallets––on
ebay so you can get an idea of what they offer. I would love to have one of
the pale pink wallets that has leather ruffles on it, but it's so
impractical; I'm sure it would get grubby right away. If I saw a red one,
however...

I did see the article – and I like your list of key features (sorry,
taking a break from writing writing perfomance reviews and I'm in
manager speak mode.) Unfortunately, I'm a plus size, and plus size
dresses seem to consist of tents and empire waist tents. I currently
have one dres that is too small (bought it in the misses section then
gained a few pounds), and one that is a bit too big. I see STYLES of
dresses (e.g.in the article you mentioned) that I KNOW would great on me
(v neck, defined waist, slightly full skirt, just below the knee,
fabulous fabric), but they just don't make them in my size. Plus size
dresses seem to assume that you have a giant bust and no waist. Neither
of which is true in my case. And 80% of them are ankle lenght.
You did say, keep ranting, right? This is a subject I've given some
thought to, as you can tell, and is one of the main reasons I am
occassionally motivated to lose weight. Nevermind health and looks, I
want a dress!

It's very frustrating. I almost never even look in the petites section
anymore. The dresses always seemed to have giant schoolmarm collars––not
what a short person really needs––which is great if you want to look like a
Pilgrim. Sometimes you have to wonder "What were they thinking?"
Again, the answer seems to be in learning how to sew our own clothes. (It's
not happening here anytime soon.)

How bizarre – maybe peter pan collars too for that popular "I'm 5' tall
so I want to look 12" look?
Sig – yes sew, or find a seamstress. The latter seems more likely, but
still not very!
