Glycolic acid disaster

Stacy Ferguson <stac...@stacyef.net>
I was excited to find that Alpha Hydrox is back and there's a 14%
glycolic acid mask that comes as prepackaged saturated face cloths with
eye, nose and mouth cutouts. I used it on Wednesday evening, looking a
lot like a mummy, and although I avoided getting any of the glycolic
acid in the eye area, I kept waking up on Thursday night and rubbing my
somewhat itchy eyelids. When I woke up on Friday morning, my ENTIRE
RIGHT EYELID WAS SWOLLEN SHUT! My left eye had some major swelling as
well but I could see out the slit. I was so horrified by how I looked
when I saw myself in the mirror that I practically got hysterical (I'm
NOT easily rattled). It looked like someone had glued two big pink
cauliflower florets onto my eye sockets! I looked seriously deformed.
My husband and I were considering going to the ER because he was equally
shocked at how extreme it was. I decided to take a couple of Benadryls,
shower and put some cortisone ointment all over my eye area.
Fortunately, by the time I was done diffusing my hair, the swelling had
diminished a lot. My vision was largely normal, although the poofy
swelling of my eyelids was still obscuring my view, as though I had
blinders partially shading my vision. I decided to go to work since some
of my colleagues are MDs as well as PhDs and I figured that getting an
appointment with a dermatologist would take longer than having one of
them give me advice. Fortunately, by the time I got to work it just
looked like I had been crying and my co–workers agreed that the
Benedryl/cortisone ointment routine was probably a good way to go.
Fortunately, my eyes are no longer swollen at all today, although my
lids are very dry, pink and flaky.
I guess I won't be using the rest of those masks!

can we say that you are very allergic to glycolic acid or just that high
concentration? Did you ask that? Because so many skincare products have
glycolic, that mask might have sensitized you to that ingredient

I've used other glycolic acid cremes and gels in the past (up to 15%)
with no issues. Some dryness, itching and peeling if I hadn't used it in
a while but this is the first issue that actually concerned me. I did
try putting a 12% glycolic cream on my chin today to see if I could
provoke an allergic reaction but nothing happened (the scientist in me
just HAD to know :) I'm wondering if the formulation of the glycolic
acid solution in the mask just penetrates the skin VERY well and when I
rinsed my face with water, even getting the diluted glycolic on my
eyelids was enough acid to give me an irritant contact dermatitis.

Stacy, sorry about your bad experience.
Does anyone know if the new version of the souffle can be purchased the drug
store or do I have to get it from the web site?
I used to get the original version at Rite Aid.
TIA
