Preventative maintenance on patent leather?

Stacy Ferguson <stac...@stacyef.net>
I got a pair of very bright red patent leather Dansko Professionals
today (no heckling from the audience, thank you! :) I haven't owned a
pair of patent leather shoes since, oh, around 1965 when I was a three
year old wearing black patent leather Buster Brown maryjanes. Do I need
to spray these with anything? What does one do to patent leather if it
scuffs?

A lonnngggg time ago I was told to use Vaseline on patent leather shoes
to keep them looking in tip–top shape. (dare I say the 1960's??)
I have read that you can use nonacetone nail polish remover to remove
scuffs, but to use just a tad and wipe gently.

Thanks. I'll keep these suggestions for when they become necessary.

I'd be really careful about using nail polish remover. Even "non–acetone"
removers are very harsh. I got a very cool black and white patent leather
bag on ebay years ago (trapezoid shaped––really interesting) but it has what
appears to be a small makeup stain on the outside (on the white part). I
tried everything to remove it. I did resort to non–acetone polish remover.
I swabbed lightly, quickly and washed it off immediately. It didn't get rid
of the makeup stain and it did look as if it dulled the shiny finish on the
leather.
I wonder if something like the Mr. Clean magic eraser product would work on
patent without messing up the shine. (I'd call Mr. Clean and ask "him".)
In the meantime, enjoy the shoes. If you worry about them too much, you
won't use and enjoy them the way you should. (I sometimes think I should
have a bodyguard when I wear my red suede boots. I try really hard to just
use and enjoy them but it's a hard habit to break.)

No heckling here! I'm wearing my black patent Dansko prof's right now. I
*love* them. FWIW, I've done nothing to protect them and after a year of
heavy wear they still look practially brand new. I really don't have any
scuffs on them either.
Also, I think they are great in the winter. You come in from the wintry mix
and just wipe them off. That's the beauty of patent leather!

Thanks for the info and I figured they'd be okay if it's wet outside. I
have many pairs of Dansko Professionals (it's become a little
pathological, actually :) and already have two black pairs! One is
smooth leather and the other is the oiled leather. I almost got them in
"raspberry" (a red/burgundy) suede but I didn't think they'd tolerate
salt and water as well as the patents. I love the look of red patent
leather but I've never seen a pair of "dressy" red patent shoes that I'd
be willing to purchase. I was always either concerned that they were too
sleazy or just wouldn't go with enough outfits. Danskos are so casual
that they couldn't look sleazy and they were just too fun–looking for me
to pass up! I think I could wear them with a lot of casual clothes.

Of course you could. That's the fun part about the patents. They are kind of
unexpected, but still appropriate in a casual outfit. I wear my black ones
all the time.
