Pantihose/Tights – Out of fashion?

po...@shaw.ca
I haven't been to a formal event in a while (since the late nineties)
so I am not sure about wearing pantihose anymore.
Back then, if you wore a little black dress, or even a long skirt, it
was fairly fashionable to wear sheer black hose with a nice pair of
pumps. Now, all you see is women having bear legs. I live in a colder
climate, so it seems ridiculous to have bear legs in the winter.
Can anyone provide some fashion insights for what to wear on your legs
in the winter, in a colder climate to a formal event?
Thanks!
Paula

I'm seeing lots of pattered tights in stores now (fishnets, lacy, ribbed,
etc.) so it depends on what you're wearing. If its truly formal, then you
wouldn't wear knee boots or patterned hosiery so I suppose you just go bear
legged and cold but wear a long coat to the event. If its formal, then
there will be heating inside!

If it is a formal event, you should be wearing a long skirt, and the
hose/no hose question becomes a minor consideration. But even with
shorter skirts hose may have become optional, but they certainly aren't
inappropriate. To my eye, sheer hose certainly trump goosebumps, and
sheer black hose do a nice job of accentuating the shape of your legs.
Ultimately though, a sennse of confidence may be the most important
element in your sense of style. So choose the option that looks best to
your eye and makes you feel elegant and pulled together.

I agree with Userb3. I'd say go with nude hose or sheer black.

My legs are hairy, but they're not bear legs. Bear legs would actually
be warm in the winter.

But is there a constitutionally guaranteed right to bear legs the way there
is for arms?

Ladies and gentlemen! You have me ROTFLOL! "Bear legs" are very warm,
but only bears wear them. What you are striving for is "bare legs". I
gave up pantyhose a long time ago. I guess I caught that from Princess
Diana. But now I have to wear "funny" shoes due to a bad foot, so it's
trouser socks or, when very cold, black tights.

Unless you work somewhere where office policy mandates their wear...

Right now patterned tights and fishnets are really in. As a result, I
started wearing fishnets a lot lately, and realize they really add some
pizazz. I am loving them! I'm sure I will end up wearing them even after the
current trend is over. I also plan to start experimenting with textured
tights. In the past I've worn a lot of opaque tights in the winter. For a
formal event, I'd still probably think about some good quality sheer hose or
stockings.

If it's truly a "formal" event, for me there's no problem as etiquette
dictates hose and closed shoes with a long dress.

I wear hose on my bare legs during the fall and winter and I live in a
fairly temperate climate. If nothing else, it prevents blisters.

I'm totally with you on that. I wear hose and tights and fishnets. The
main reason I prefer them is because it prevents blisters.
