Are Dresses Out? It seems like it....

April <kaos...@aol.com>
I have a wedding in Chicago in a month and I wanted a cocktail–type
dress to wear. Maybe something with Velvet. I went to every store
between Carmel and Salinas (CA) and found NOTHING. It was either
full–length ball gowns or separartes that involved a velvet pesant
skirt. Not that there is anything WRONG with that, but I don't want
either one. I just want a dress. Something cute. Something you wear
to the wedding of an ex–boyfriend. Macy's had nothing but CRAP. And
I mean CRAP. I ended up ordering 2 dresses from Macys.Com when I was
failed by Nordies, Bluefly, Neiman's, and Saks. I had ordered a
PERFECT dress earlier in the month, but the halter was too short for
someone like me with a D–cup. I was picturing myself in TRACTION from
wearing that thing.
Anyway...what's the deal? I couldn't even find anything decent at Ann
Taylor. Our locak high–end boutique had some OK items, but I want
more than OK when the prices start at OVER $400.

I've noticed the same thing. I want a couple of dresses to wear to work
when putting on more than one piece of clothing is just too much work.
Like you, nothing.

I haven't bought a dress in years. I tried to buy two this year from a
NM catalogue but both were out of stock in all sizes!

Doesn't it just drive you nuts when you order something online/phone or go to
a store after reading an ad somewhere only to find that they're out of stock!
Maddening in the worst way...

I've actually found the opposite where I live (Portland, Oregon).
There are quite a few really great boutiques, many of which are locally
owned, with lots of really nice dresses, perfect for weddings. They
can be expensive, but if it's really nice, consider it an investment.
So you may want to try some smaller shops. If you prefer chain stores,
try Banana Republic. Sometimes you get lucky there, depending where
you live.
Good luck.

I had just received the catalogue in the mail. I am also seeing a lot
of this on web sites. You find the item of your dreams but it is not
available in any size or color.

Seems like all I am buying and wearing lately are dresses. I like Necessary
Objects for inexpensive party dresses, like this one:

However, I am pretty small on top so I can wear a junior line.
LOL, Now I think I'll buy this one!
Hope you find something!

My 2 dresses from Macys.com arrived yesterday. The bias cut velvet
was awesome on the hanger, but it made me look chunky. The black silk
Kenneth Cole was stunning and fit like a glove...BUT...how many LBD's
do I really need? I have an equally sexy Tahari LBD I can wear.
So...both dresses will be going back to Macy's and I will just wear
one of the many LBD's I already have. I was just hoping for SOMETHING
with some pizzazz to it.

FWIW, I wear dresses (or skirts and some kind of top, as in a nice sweater)
everyday. I prefer very long skirts, nothing too flashy. I believe in a
modest type of clothing due to my religion. I think this thread was more
about formal type dresses for cocktail parties and such, but I just wanted
to let you know that people still wear skirts and dresses. You won't find a
woman in my Church who wears pants and they are very fashionable, yet modest
in their clothing selections. If you like chains, Cato's has a whole bunch
of nice floor length skirts for quite cheap and a nice selection of modern
fashions...not anything "old–lady–type" and that is where I buy almost all
of my dresses. Just my 2 cents. :–)
