hankies

"susyd...@hotmail.com" <susydeli@hotmail.com>
I live in Argentina, and would like to know if in USA or other
countries there are women who still like and carry real hankies. I love
these very feminine real hankies, lovely embroidered in one corner,
which I carry most of the time when I go out.
I do use kleenex, but only for blowing my nose, etc. I found the cotton
hankies very romantic, and just love to feel a freshly laundred and
neatly folded and pressed hankie in my hand, with a touch of perfume...
Here in Argentina thay are not so easy to find, and most of them are
not a really good quality. =BFAre there common to find in stores there?
=BFDo women purchase and use these hankies?
I am very glad to have found this group.
Regards from Argentina!!

They are not common but can be found in many stores. They are usually
made in other countries..

Hello. My name is Susana. Thanks for your reply.
I was looking at some nice vintage hankies in E–bay, and will buy some
of them, but I would prefer really new ones.
I wonder if there are other women who still use these hankies. They
aren't common in Argentina either.

I haven't seen any women carry or use a hankie in YEARS. I suppose
most don't want to be bothered with keeping up with them, laundering,
and ironing. A Kleenex is much more convenient and I would suppose
more sanitary.
"val189" <gwehr...@bellsouth.net>
I use hankies alot – have an big collection with tatted edges of ev.
imaginable color done by my mother. She did these back during days of
radio when eyes and hands were free at night to knit, crochet etc.
How many of us were weaned into ironing by having to do the
handkerchiefs and pillow cases? Ugh...
They may be a pain to wash and iron, but somehow, they look a lot
better on some occasions than a wadded up Kleenex. At least, if a
hankie goes go thru the wash in error, there's no big lint cleanup.

I buy them for my sons and husband and instruct them to carry
them always. It would be a good trend to revive––especially
if one sneezes into them.

I use both. I keep one to wipe off my glasses. I just think they are
very pretty. The one that is in my handbag now has a scene of a gondola

It's one of those things we don't see much of these days and not likely to
make any impact with the younger generations. But of course some people will
still prefer the old fashioned hankie over the disposable tissue simply
because they're softer and well, almost classy. Sort of a glamour thing in a
way and far removed from our convenience throw away style that we so many
have adapted to.
And they're always a nice touch as a gift with initials embroydered in...

I live in the northwest region of the U.S., and I have yet to see
anyone carrying a hankie. I know some brides will carry them on their
wedding day for tradition, but I don't think it's a common practice
anymore. But I agree with one of the members... we should revive it.
I think it's very sophisticated and elegant.
"Lipgloss Junkie" <lipglossjun...@gmail.com>
I know it's an old tradition but I don't really get the point of the
hankie. The perfume on it in your bag sounds good – makes the bag smell
good. Blowing ones nose and hanging on to the hankie sounds a little
gross.
I love Sniff tissues. I've bough lots of their cute tissues.

I polled my husband and he said both he and my son still use the
ones I gave them last Christmas. I am going to buy some more
for them, they have come in very handy for them and it's a good
tradition, maybe I will also get my son's g/f some pretty ones.

I really regret my English isn't so good... because I couldn't
understand your last messages about English majors, TSMIM, etc. But I
am glad to participate gere in this group and thus learn some more!
I am 29 years old, and really don't feel old fashioned. But I really
love hankies! I consider them not only very feminine and delicate, but
I think they do have something "special". Hankies were very often
related to romantic stories (Shakespeare's Otello?), they are given a
special souvenir, mentioned in literature and songs.Or used in some
folk dances. And there are even some books about hankies (Hanky–panky:
an intimate history of the handkerchief. By Helen Gustaffson).
I prefer those nice and very soft floral embroidered hankies, always
clean, slightly starched, and perhaps with a touch of perfum. I like to
fold and iron them into a triangle, allowing the embroidery to be seen.

I didn't catch the "original post" I don't think, but I was wondering where
one can buy women's hankies at any chain stores or some type of store that
is common like Walmart or Target. If no one can think of anywhere I could
get women's hankies there, could someone please post a site that takes
credit cards and is cheap, yet has nice ones? I like ones that have some
decorative qualities to them, but I am not super picky. Just looking for
something in my small budget range. Let me know. TIA!!!

Audrey, it's so funny that you say this! I was thinking the exact thing
before I read your reply! I normally find them in odd places at the
holidays such as at the ends of aisles not really advertised or near costume
jewelry, near purses, slippers, etc.
Kristin, if it helps, I placed an order with Miles Kimball (kitschy on–line
store along the lines of Lillian Vernon) recently and just threw in an order
for a set of 3 hankies for my mom. They were not the best quality (they
were not completely opaque) but definitely not the worst. All cotton with a
flower embroidered in a corner. She loved them.

If you're in Atlanta, Richard's Variety Store in Peachtree Battle
carries hankies, the inexpensive kind that are still cute. White lawn
(I guess it's lawn) edged and embroidered with flowers. The
white–on–white are especially nice.
BTW, Richard's has all kinds of goodies that you might want but don't
know where to buy – those little black photo corners, folded rain hats
that you keep in your purse, clear shower curtains, Little Golden
Books, rubber ducks, those felt cups you put under chair legs to keep
them from marring the floor, foil stars to stick on homework, Snap 'N'
Pops... I think much of their stock is the same as it was when I was
a little girl and went with my grandmom to shop back in the 1960s.

I guess they're nice to flutter around in a feminine way and sort of

want to be carrying a snotty cloth in my bag or pocket. Eeeeew. Give

I carry a handkerchief. Sometimes I'll even tuck one in the cuff of
my sleeve depending on where I will be going (say, a movie theatre
where I don't want to be rummaging around in my handbag). I get hot
flashes and when I do, I sweat, especially on my neck under my
hairline. I use it to dab perspiration. They don't get icky from
just one day of this and I do wash them regularly. :)
I don't use them for blowing my nose, however. That's what the little
pocket tissue packs are for.

hi may be old thread but here's my opinion
i carry and use cotton hankies
i despise paper tissues!
dont ask me why.. i cant answer it
my parents and their parents etc used real hankies never had a box or packet
of tissues in the house.
am i strange?
i just dont understand why people think using a cotton hankie is unhygenic
yet carry and re–use a paper tissue time after time and think thats ok!!
is it the fact that you have to wash and iron the cotton hankie? and that
takes time and effort? does that make it un hygenic?
is the re used tissue more hygenic because eventually you throw it away?
even though you have used it more than it was designed for? ie use once then
despose it?
mmm
just a thought.
