"I'll Make You The Next Sharon Tate"

'Object of Polanski's desire' named
By Nicola Woolcock
ROMAN POLANSKI used vulgar chat–up lines to make sexual
advances
to a model less than a month after his wife's death, the High Court was
told
yesterday.
Beatte Telle was identified for the first time as the woman
allegedly groped and distressed by the behaviour of the bereaved
film–maker
in Elaine's, a restaurant in New York. Edward Perlberg, her former
boyfriend, who is now a retired Wall Street financier, told the court
that
Mr Polanski attempted to seduce Miss Telle less than a fortnight after
the
funeral of his wife, Sharon Tate, in August 1969.
Mr Perlberg said the Norwegian model insisted that the
couple
leave the restaurant early and was "very agitated" during a taxi ride
home,
accusing Mr Polanski of touching her and saying that he would arrange a
Hollywood screen test to "make another Sharon Tate out of me". Mr
Perlberg,
66, said: "I thought this was generally creepy and it bothered me . . .
Isaid perhaps he could be excused because he'd just suffered a terrible
shock
(the murder of his wife by Charles Manson and his cult). This didn't
seem to
lessen her anxiety. We ended up agreeing that he had behaved
improperly."
Mr Perlberg was giving evidence during Mr Polanski's libel
action against the publisher Cond=E9 Naste for an article in Vanity Fair
in
July 2002. This alleged that Mr Polanski had stopped at Elaine's on the
way
to his wife's funeral and made sexual advances to Miss Telle.
Mr Perlberg said a strange quiet had fallen over the
restaurant
when Mr Polanski entered and that he introduced himself to the
Polish–born
director. The couple and their friend, Lewis Lapham, the source of the
article and now Editor of Harper's magazine, were later joined
uninvited at
their table by Mr Polanski, who seemed "most interested" in Miss Telle
and
"inserted himself" between her and Mr Lapham.
Mr Perlberg described his former girlfriend as tall, slim,
good–looking and athletic, with strawberry–blonde hair, and said she
was
used to being the subject of men's attention.
"He (Mr Polanski) talked to no one else at the table. In
fact he
monopolised her attention. I could see she was somewhat flustered. I
didn't
hear what their conversation was about. After a while she rose and
said,
'Edward, we're leaving'."
Under cross–examination by John Kelsey–Fry, QC, for Mr
Polanski,
Mr Perlberg admitted that he "did nothing" about Mr Polanski's
behaviour
towards Miss Telle, adding that he had not realised Mr Polanski was
allegedly touching his girlfriend under the table. When questioned by
Tom
Shields, QC, for Cond=E9 Nast, he denied concocting a story with Mr
Lapham
about the incident, saying: "He's a friend but I wouldn't perjure
myself for
anyone."
Miss Telle lived in New York with her mother in the 1960s.
Mr
Justice Eady questioned Mr Perlberg about the former model's
whereabouts. He
said the last address he had for her was in Oslo. Mr Shields added that
Miss
Telle was alive but did not say why she was not giving evidence.
Earlier Mr Lapham, a Yale and Cambridge graduate, told the
court
that he regularly socialised at Elaine's with writers, actors and other
people in the arts. He was a family friend of Abigail Fulger, a coffee
heiress murdered with Miss Tate. Mr Kelsey–Fry said this proved that Mr
Lapham could not have mistakenly thought that Mr Polanski was on the
way to
his wife's funeral at the time of the incident in Elaine's.
Describing the attempted seduction, Mr Lapham said that Mr
Polanski had spoken to Miss Telle in a "forward way". Referring to the
allegation that Mr Polanski said he could make Miss Telle "the next
Sharon
Tate", Mr Lapham, 70, said the remark was "tasteless and vulgar and
also a
clich=E9".
Mr Lapham admitted that he had been wrong about the timing
of Mr
Polanski's visit to Elaine's and was challenged by Mr Kelsey–Fry to
apologise. He said: "Certainly I would apologise for that," but added:
"Would Mr Polanski apologise to me for calling me an abominable liar?
The
incident that happened in Elaine's was true."
Mr Lapham said that some of the phrases used in the article
were
not what he would have chosen, but that it captured the "gist of what
happened". Mr Polanski, who has been wanted in the US since 1977 for
having
unlawful sex with a girl aged 13, denies that the incident happened.
The
trial continues.
