Shopping therapy

Debbie the Dogged <seesigforrealaddr...@mouse–potato.com>
I've had a rough few days, both at work and in my personal life (someone
picked up my old cat, whose favorite thing is to lounge in the the sun
and always stays near my house, from in front of my house and in spite
of his tag with my address and phone number, took him to Animal Control,
where they were planning an animal cruelty investigation because he's so
thin! I actually arrived down there, looking for him, at the same time
this person was turning him in, and told them of course he looked
horrible: he'd been without his medications for 24 hours, has heart
failure and kidney disease, and is around 23 years old. Told them to
call my vet and come over to my house to see for themselves that I take
good care of my animals. Animal Control guy believe me and
congratulated me on taking such good care of him, person who snatched
cat wasn't so sure, but Animal Control guy told me to take him home, no
fine, no impounding, no anything. I fed him, gave him all his meds, he
slept like a log and was on my bed wanting to be fed the next morning.
I'm still feeling really shaky though, and my cat who's been an indoor–
outdoor cat ever since I got him 15 years ago is now a strictly indoor
cat. My friend who's an animal control officer in another jurisdiction
told me I should file theft charges, but I just want to forget the whole
thing) so went on a shopping spree:
From Costco, splurged on a new cordless phone system for my house to
replace my antique phones: http://tinyurl.com/66tzc but it came in the
"Costco Special" pack with 2 additional handsets. Absolutely amazing
how much better the sound quality is over my old phones.
From J Jill (my first J Jill purchase)
http://tinyurl.com/d9c4e in turquoise (on sale in the stores, though not
on the web site)
From the Aerosoles store:
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/5119209/c/609.html but in this color:
http://tinyurl.com/bcq6t
From J.C. Penney:
R&K Originals 2 piece set – olive green linen/rayon short–sleeved jacket
over a brown, green and tan snakeskin–like print tank dress.
A pair of brown leather "Strictly Comfort" wedge sandals.

Heh.
In the beginning, I had 3 cats. Then I inherited a toy poodle. He was
used to a little old lady who was home all the time, not someone who
worked. So, I got him his own poodl. At that point, I became "Debbie
the Underdogged", because there were fewer dogs than cats. Then it
seemed like we needed a female dog to balance things out, so a female
chihuahua mix moved in. I remained "Debbie the Underdogged", for no
real reason. Then a friend who does dog rescue asked me to look after
this Chinese Crested Powder Puff, just for a week, while she was on
vacation. That dog never went back to my friend, and with 4 dogs and 3
cats, I became "Debbie the Overdogged". Then last year Tanner (the 2nd
poodle) died at approx. 17 years of age, and I decided I had enough
animals, and became "Debbie the Dogged".
Don't know why I never became "Debbie the Catted". Maybe "Debbie who
might as well deposit her paycheck directly into the vet's bank
account" would be the most appropriate.

You definitely have your hands full. I was amazed that your cat has
lived 23 years. That's a long cat life.

You, me and the vets. With everything that's wrong with him (hmmm, all
in all he's on meds for kidney failure, cariomyopathy, anemia, and
finishing up some antibiotics for yet another infection), it's close to
a miracle. He just has this incredible will to live. Every night he
goes to sleep on his special pillow downstairs, and every morning when I
wake up he's upstairs on my bed going "Feed me!". He always climbs into
my lap for pets and cuddles after dinner. He's known around here as the
Energizer kitty.

We've got a feline senior citizen here too––also 23. I don't really
know what keeps her going, but we tease her that she's not smart enough
to know she's that old (she's never been too bright). She enjoys life
and is in pretty good shape, with meds for kidneys and thyroid. Moves
well, still plays and jumps, but just a little slower and more
cautiously.
We have a little routine now that DH is not home 5 days of the week.
Every morning, when we get up, I give her a little cuddle, and say,
"You don't get to die today." So far it's working.
