I like the length, but the 'beads' are waaaay to big for my taste.
They look like they could be a dental danger.

My 23 year old is really on top of this trend. She has a olive green
kuku bead necklace and wears it with a simple white shirt and jeans.
She may have bought it at UO; she gets lots of compliments on it. At
Nordstrom in February she bought a multi–strand necklace with some
strands of wooden beans and some of "gold" It really looks good and I
have threatened to borrow it from her. Coral was supposed to be "in"
this summer so we bought inexpensive coral necklaces from a street
vendor. I pair mine with a turquoise necklace bought several years ago
from another vendor. I like the chunky necklaces as long as the rest of
the outfit is simple.

LOL, I like the beads, but not the length. I'd like to get a chunky
necklace like that in a choker length which is a much more flattering
style for me.

For only $5–6, it is not a costly trend! Cute!

This is a prime example of "Not one–size–fits all", imho. A petite person
should definitely consider scaling back on both the size of the beads and
the length.

Cofarb you're right, and honestly even on taller girls it looks huge,
although the hugeness may be kind of the point, in fact on the kukui
website they call them "leis" not necklaces.
I was tempted by the $6 deal at hulasuppycenter for a few seconds but I
am too old (and have too little closet space) to jump on every trend,
even for 6 bucks. However, it did inspire me to haul out my bead box
and my collection of tacky costume jewelry to see if I could make a new
necklace longer and chunkier than what I would normally wear....
Audrey your daughter sounds very chic! And I am glad you are getting to
wear your turquoise and coral stuff again....I have been seeing a lot
of that as well even though it was very in only a few years back. I
made a bunch of great coral/turquoise stuff a few years ago but
gave/sold it all away.....wish I had some now....
Best,
Susan

I was never much for really costume–y costume jewelry, but I have a box of
"jools" that belonged to my grandmother. Last year I revisited the box and
discovered, among other things, a few rhinestone brooches, some beaded
necklaces (in colors that are all the rage this year––turquoise and coral)
and some heinous earrings made with real coral pieces that I disassembled to
make into an anklet. There were even some lei–sized necklaces that I've
been wearing as belts! I was very happy that I'd kept the box for
sentimental reasons; I'd never expected to actually wear any of it.

Also every kind of large chunky long necklace, mostly of natural

Remember, you heard it here first.
Luckily I got a short strand black kukui bead necklace for about $4.00 when
I was in Kauai last month. I didn't even know they were super trendy until
I arrived home and saw pics of celebs wearing it (in People magazine, etc.)!
BTW, I'm petite and the long strand is much too overpowering, but the short
strand is great.
