Since I usually buy shoes at places like DSW or online, I haven't been
in a mall shoe store in a long time. I was just curious if shoe
salespeople still work on commission as a rule.
The reason I ask is because of something I read on Techdirt. Because
a lot of retailers who also have a web presence tend to price goods
lower in the online store (Best Buy is always given as a prime
example) many shoppers are browsing in stores but buying online.
According to Mike at Techdirt, he heard of a shoe store which would
(attempt to) charge a $30 fee for trying on shoes if you did not buy a
pair. Supposedly this was to make up for a commissioned salesperson
"wasting" his/her time by fitting you for a shoe, only for you take
advantage of the lower prices online later.
(How the salesperson knew you were going to buy a pair online later,
instead of just not liking or not wanting the shoe after you tried it
on, nobody has explained.)
