Nail Polish and Swimming Pools

Userb3 <use...@yahoo.com>
Friday DW visited her favorite day spa for a pedicure, and came home that
night to paint her fingernails a matching color. We spent Saturday at the
pool and working on mint juleps and our first sunburn of the season.
To her dismay, by Saturday evening, the polish on her hands was beginning
to peel and the polish on her feet was showing several "dents". It was as
if the pool chemicals had somehow softened or diluted her polish. She
said that while her pedicurist did the full blown treatment (base, two
coats of color, topcoat), she'd just put two coats of polish (no base or
top coat) on her fingers.
By this morning in the shower, 90%+ of the polish on her hands was gone,
and her toes weren't looking like she'd just had an expensive pedicure.
She says she's never had this experience before.
FWIW, the polishes were from two diferent brands, and we're not using
anything new or different in the pool. The chlorine is a little higher
than usual because we just opened the pool, but not enough to cause any
problems (we don't think).
Anyone else ever had this happen? Suggestions for avoiding it in the
future?

Are there changes in the pool chemicals you are using? I know that in
California nail polish formulas change when certain ingredients are
banned so the OPI whatever someone may have bought several years ago is
not the same formula as the same color today. I imagine pool chemicals
have changed too.

We're using the same stuff we used last year (with no reported problems for
DW or anyone else). Just basic big tab chlorine tabs, a few doses of shock
to get the pool going, and a dose or two of the same algaecide we've used
for several years. That's why we're so puzzled.

I've experienced "polish peel" several times and tend to think it is
caused by polish that has been "overly–thinned." No scientific proof,
just a hunch.

Thanks for the advice. As it turns out, the sunscreen we were using
contained DEET (bug repellent), and THAT was the offending solvent. Looks
like the pool chemicals got a bad rap.
