OT: Ping Claire in SF – SF rental advice needed

mlch...@mail1.sas.upenn.edu (Melanie L Chang)
Hi Claire,
I found an apartment on Craigslist that I really like. I have a
"feeling" about it, and usually when I get those intuitions they're
correct, so I decided to try and rent it sight unseen.
I've talked to the agent about four times in the last two days, she was
very positive and seemed encouraging (mentioned that I sounded like a
good tenant and played up the dog friendliness of the property). At the
same time, she seems really wifty and disorganized and kept forgetting
that I am not in town –– I finally asked her to fax me a renter's
application and she said she'd do it today, and forgot.
Do you know if agents show apartments over holiday weekends, and if it is
appropriate for me to keep calling her back and nagging? How aggressive
can I be without alienating people when looking for an apartment? The ad
went up on Friday and says there are open houses every day at 4:30, but
didn't mention whether they would be doing them over the Memorial Day
weekend or not. The only contact info I have is the phone number in the
ad, there is no email address. It's very frustrating being so far away
and feeling like my hands are tied. I really think this is supposed to be
my apartment!
Any advice?

Hi Melanie, I have been offline mostly (very busy) and just saw your post
now. I hope you've had better luck with the agent since then. I actually
haven't rented an apt in a long time and I don't have a sense about how
agressive you can get. It probably depends upon the person, and maybe a
disorganized person like that won't remember that half of the calls from you
were actually from you thus you won't appear to be all that aggressive??? I
would offer to go check out the open house for you but my schedule doesn't
have any openings around that time until next week. I hope you've had better
luck with the agent since then.
BTW I know someone who lives in a multi–unit building in the Haight–Ashbury
area that is managed by a rental company that manages a number of bldgs in
the area. I'll try to catch her and ask for the contact info and her
impression of the mgmt company.

Thanks –– that would be awesome.
It turned out someone came to see the apartment right after I got off the
phone with the agent, and rented it. Oh well. Onward and upward!
