OT: Party music

"caryper...@aol.com" <caryperk39@aol.com>
I'm throwing together a playlist for a cocktail party on Wed. Would
anyone mind contributing their suggestions to great cocktail party
music? I'm open to any & all suggestions – though the age group is
between 35 – 55. Classics, drinking favorites and anything new &
different are all welcome suggestions.
Many thanks & yay for itunes & ipods. (I got the most dynamite speaker
setup for Mother's day – it's going to make party music so easy)
cheers,
cary

anything by Jack Johnson www.jackjohnson.com
Chet Baker's The Italian Sessions
John Pizzarelli's Bossa Nova
Michael Buble www.michaelbuble.com
A Twist of Jobim
Of course a party I'd have would start with the new U2 or Dave Matthews
albums and then move on to Aerosmith and The Stones :)

I love Mancini. Breakfast at Tiffanys soundtrack or any of his movie
music will do.
I also love Ultra Lounge http://www.ultralounge.com/. This website has
drink suggestions too.
If you want something more modern, I like the soundtrack from the
Virgin Suicides by Air. Very moody.
Good luck with your party.

Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack and whatever inexpensive disco
compilations you can find.
ABBA
The Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion discs
Those two Elvis CD's of his #1 and #2 hits
The Beatles 1
Throw in Norah Jones for some backgroundy mood stuff.
Duran Duran one of the Greathist hits CD's
Beach Boys
Throw in some Weird Al
And some 80's collections.
Buddy Holly.
B–52's, especially cosmic Thing (the whole album)
throw in some REM too.
The Katamari Damacy soundtrack. it's weird, it's Japanese, but it has
great music.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
No Doubt.
Toss in some Cher.
Kill Bill has great music as does Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.
Yep I'm a Tarantino fan.
Individual songs:
"Jerk it out" by the Caesars
"Vertigo" by U2
"Technologic" by Daft Punk
1985 by Bowling for Soup
Many thanks & yay for itunes & ipods. (I got the most dynamite speaker
setup for Mother's day – it's going to make party music so easy)
I've got a Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable) as my portable music
player, so I get to use Sony Connect as my music store, (The PSP only
plays Sony's ATrac and MP3) though I am tempted to buy some of the
Final Fantasy albums from iTunes, burn em to CD and re–rip as mp3.
Curse you, Square–Enix, for making Nobuo Uematsu's music iTunes exclusive.
Here's an interesting URL for a very interesting piece of software
that just happened to accidentally get pasted into this message. How
clumsy of me.

– Dave Brubeck

– Elvis Costello
– Shag music (east–coast beach sound––Tams, Embers,
Drifters...)
– The Buena Vista Social Club
– E.R.A. Outentiko
– Anything involving the Rat Pack
– Northern Soul
Nothing too loud. Cocktails means mingling and talking and I take it there
won't be a mosh pit. Out of the list above, the Buena Vista, E.R.A.
Outentiko (especially the tunes "Bobbo List" and "Curaçao") and any
northern Soul are probably your best bet. Have fun!

|Also please keep in mind (I forgot who the original poster is/was,
Susan??) that some don't drink. Sparkling apple juice, flavored
waters, ginger ale and even lowly diet coke.
If you can afford a bartender, go for it. They know the hottest
drinks. Try a bartending school, all you have to do is supply the
liquor and you'll be able to enjoy the party more.
"Opoponax" <opopo...@clix.pt>
I am not sure how fashionable my drinks of choice are, but here it
goes:
–On a hot summer day/evening, in crowded, loud places, I enjoy a
Caipirinha (lime, sugar, Cachaca – brasilean sugar cane spirit – and
lots of crushed ice). A good Cuba Libre (rum, coke, slice of lemon)
will also do.
–On other ocassions, a simple glass of wine is perfect (I favor red
Burgundy wines, but a nice white wine is also ok).
If I am driving, I choose a light sparkling water, flavoured with a
lemon slice and (natural) lemon juicy.

I rarely drink mixed drinks, but when I do, I have lately favored key
lime pie martinis. Yum! It is like dessert in a glass, and satisfies my
sweet tooth. I especially like the crushed graham crackers around the
rim (instead of salt).
Here is a recipe if you're interested:
http://www.recipezaar.com/65931
The other night I tried a "Mad Morrocan" which was a light drink
consisting of prosecco in a champagne glass, strawberries, and just a
splash of strawberry vodka. If you don't like vodka, prosecco on its
own is a good alternative to champagne, and quite nice with *dried*
fruit. Dried strawberries, for example, will sink in the glass instead
of floating, and as you sip they let off a stronger flavor than fresh.
For fun go to Trader Joe's and seek out exotic dried fruits such as
mangos or pineapples.
I also like sangria, particularly in the summer, and that's easy enough
to make in large batches for a party. Much easier than running to the
blender constantly to make up another batch of something frozen.
Is there a theme for your party? What is the occasion? You could just
make up a batch of any run–of–the–mill cocktail, but rename it with
something clever to commemorate the occasion. Seven year wedding
anniversary? Call it the "Seven Year Hangover" or "Seven Years of
Bliss" cocktail, depending on your perspective. Housewarming party?
Call it the "Jumbo Mortgage Blackout" or "In debt to the eyeballs"
cocktail (for the last one, put two green olives in the glass because
they look like eyeballs). You get the idea!
And also put some thought in how you accessorize the drink – that often
is what makes a cocktail fun and special. For example, a nice touch is
to get those plastic balls that glow (similar to those necklaces that
you snap and it produces a neon glow for several hours), and put those
inside the cocktail so it glows like it's radioactive. This adds a
touch of fun to any sort of drink, especially for summer outdoor BBQs.
And it doesn't exclude those who are only drinking sparkling water from
the fun, either.

As Teresa mentioned, Caipirinhas have reported replaced Mojitos. But that
won't stop me from ordering Mojitos. I'm ready to give up Cosmos anyway.
I'm curious to hear what drinks are trendy. I read about the locally popular
cocktails and I keep seeing rinks with Pimms mentioned. I just defy trends
and order kirs. And personally I'm partial to drinks that are blue.

What if, as an artist or a company, you don't make DVDs?
The decline has*not* been overrated. Virtually every classical artist
in the world today has lost their record contract because of this
decline. Classical and jazz recording is about 12% of what it was ten
years ago.

I paid 99cents for every downloaded single, $9.99 for a downloaded
album. I realize there are places to get them for free, but I'm happy
to pay for the single songs I want rather than buying the entire CD
just for one or two songs.
And I like not having to keep track of all those CD's. This way I

I like vintage recipe cocktails. One of my favorite cocktails is the
Negroni, served straight up in a cocktail glass, gin with big splashes
of sweet vermouth and Campari. It is pink but definitely not a Cosmo.
I was at the Campbell Apartment in Grand Central recently, and
everyone was drinking Prohibiton Cocktails, which are made with rum
and fruit juice in a snifter and topped off with champagne.
For summer, I like a dry rose, but these can be hard to find, and
bartenders keep wanting to give me White Zinfandel.

hi, vodka snob here! i decided not to order a Cosmo at a restaurant
that didn't have Gray Goose Vodka. but that's what i get normally. i
prefer it with Gray Goose L'Orange and Cointreau, but if they don't

Yeah, pink, not red! Red = too much juice. This is a vodka cocktail.
Too sweet and it's not made properly!
