OT current movies seen

"Stevie" <privilegemagaz...@charter.net>
Hi there
have seen a fair amount of movies recently and not been all that happy with
the $$ or time spent.
Star Wars episode 3 (or 6) .. no spoiler here but if you really REALLY have
to see it bec you are a SW junkie, you will love the effects and what they
do with the story line.
However if you do expect some *acting* for your 8 bucks + the cost of
whatever you eat,
take a huge step backwards. Natalie Portman and Samuel Jackson and even
Ewan Mc Gregor are major plywood in this piece. The guy who plays the
emperor is ok but still not sinister enough. The traditional characters like
Yoda are pretty good but if these Jedi were so together and on top of things
(intuitively) how come they didn't feel the change in the force as it was
happening?
If it's about light hearted fun and you don't mind waiting to see the movie
in about a week, I highly recommend that.
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.. silly, stupid but fun in a way if you were
just looking for something that requires NO concentration and would be fun
for 10 year olds of any age.
I saw it with the SO and he considered it a waste of his time. I got the
references since I knew the book

Ladies in Lavender, with Judi Dench and Maggie Smith – filmed on the
gorgeous Cornwall coast. Right now, it's in limited release in the U.S.
Hopefully, it will come to more screens soon.

The first ten minutes were promising, and I thought, "Hey,
maybe they nailed it," but they didn't. It then turned into a music
video set in space.

that was SOOOOOOOOOOO exactly what I felt. the music video concept. It
started out very neatly put but then descended into stupid sitcom

I wouldn't see another SW film if you paid me. Even on TV. Even if
you gave me the DVD. (I'd use it for a coaster for my martini.) And
George Lucas is my wife's stepfather's cousin!
He hasn't had an original idea in 25 years. He's spent his whole life
milking one––amazingly so.

I know the book too and I still thought it was a waste of time. I don't
know if the book is "unfilmable" as some say, but I can say they
didn't do a very good job, feeling they had to keep the audience
attention with sheer manic noise exploding onto the screen every twenty
seconds. The first ten minutes were promising, and I thought, "Hey,
maybe they nailed it," but they didn't. It then turned into a music

I love to watch movies a lot more than watching television. The
Hitchhiker's Guide is quirky fun. I don't expect much from Star Wars
beyond special effects because I've read too many reviews. I'm looking
forward to summer movie rentals now that regular series are finishing
with season finales. The tv shows I watched were Gilmore Girls, One
Tree Hill, Desperate Housewives and the OC.

I'm just curious why you're suddenly panning the current crop of movies.
Most of the movies I've seen over the last 15 years suck so awful it's
amazing. Some years there are small peaks––around '98–'99 there were
quite a few films I saw in a row that I liked a great deal––but overall
films have sucked, as has music, TV and everything else, since U.S.
culture became corporatized and homogenized.
I have 200 DVDs and, not counting PBS shows and documentaries, only
about ten of them are post–1990.

I went and spent some $$ to see 2 movies that I thought weren't worth
my time. I was just posting about it. Others who have seen SW episode 3
... felt the similarly..
I know 2 others who saw the Hitchhikers.. et all and didn't like that
either.
I have other movies out there that I have seen and liked very much just
I don't like the jr high mentality of film making

Yet the weird thing, the thing I don't get, is all these films rake in
the bucks (so of course they make more). People complain how much they
hate them, but they go see the next ones that come out. That's why I
give 99.9% of the movies out there a big miss today. Sure I must
occasionally pass on that rare gem, but if I have to weed through a
thousand turkeys to get to it, I'll pass. I just don't have the time.

Exactly, and it's here to stay. Nobody today studies screenwriting or
dramatic structure. I learned more about structuring drama from reading
Aristitle's "Poetics" than I did in any film class (I did take quite a
few) or from reading any "screenplay" books. A lot of kids are trying
to write screenpays these days, but they're not going to get options.
Meanwhile most of the directors and producers come from the MTV side
nowadays and many of the scripts get chosen by––I'm not kidding,
insiders have talked to me about this––who is willing to sleep with
whom. It's either that, or just rip off something from TV from 30 years
ago that this generation hasn't seen.
